“Sometimes I’m afraid of my shadow, it’s always following me.”
[fangirl babbling] Why isn’t the new Emma Frost out yet? What about the new Smax? What’s so hard about issue number five, people?!
Speaking of five, Jem came out in 1985. Dude, I fucking loved Jem. And She-Ra. I need a She-Ra tee shirt. I feel bad for kids these days; we had quality shizznit in the 80’s. [/fangirl babbling]
The O.C.
Schadenfreude
Ryan’s not clever, but he’s never pretended to be.
Ryan’s smart. He’s resourceful. He knows how to get what he wants through diligence and subtlety. He applies steady pressure instead of brute force and has patience when other people give up.
A lesser man, someone not as jaded, would give up Seth as a lost cause just because he doesn’t know what he wants.
Someone else, not-Ryan, could have decided that friendship and wife-beaters are no match for breasts and miniskirts.
Even a clever person might decide that playing Summer and Anna off against each other would be the quickest way to eliminate all the competition, but Ryan knows that would only make a larger mess.
Things have to run their natural course, and this is why Ryan has spent all his time pursuing Marissa even though she's not what he wants in the end.
It’s not lying; he’s just being a little misleading.
::
Ryan purposefully leaves the door unlocked when Marissa comes over, knowing the Cohen inability to knock, and then smirks at breakfast when Seth looks like someone poked him in the eye.
Ryan deliberately wears low-necked shirts when Marissa leaves a hickey on his neck, and then sits too close to Seth in the car on the way too school.
When Seth asks about his sexual prowess; Ryan exaggerates. But only a little.
The more Seth stares, the more Ryan finds other things to do. Sometimes he does nothing. Sometimes he does this nothing with Marissa.
Ryan’s well aware that Seth doesn’t like games, but he also knows that Seth has a competitive streak as long as the pier. Anyone’s who’s played Grand Theft Auto with Seth will attest to this, and all Ryan’s doing is providing a little motivation for Seth to want to win.
::
Marissa has bony elbows and sharp collarbones. Her hips jut out, and her breasts are so small they’re practically non-existent.
If Seth were a girl, he would be built like Marissa.
If Marissa were a boy, she would be built like Seth.
Marissa is all glossy lipstick and apple-scented shampoo. Seth’s shampoo smells somewhat similar, and if Ryan closes his eyes when he kisses Marissa and licks away the gloss, it’s almost like he’s with someone else entirely.
::
Ryan listens when everyone else is yelling. He observes covetous looks between scowls and sneers, and he bides his time when the fighting begins.
First, Seth and Summer, now, Seth and Anna.
It’s only a matter of time before the whole thing gets flipped around again.
All that talking is just replacing the action.
People from Newport should talk less.
::
Seth is dumped by Summer on a Monday, and Anna on a Tuesday.
He comes to Ryan for comfort on a Wednesday.
Ryan sends Seth away with swollen lips and confusion etched into his forehead, then he breaks up with Marissa on a Thursday.
By Friday, all hell has broken loose.
::
A wise man knows how to step back and let things work themselves out in the end, and Ryan has never taken comfort in the misfortune of others, but there’s always a first time for everything.
Ryan’s too old to be a boy, but not quite old enough to be a man; and as much as he cares for Marissa, she’s a little too much like his mother.
He would rather do the leaving than get left, because he’s not quite the white knight he’s supposed to be, and maybe they’ll be friends someday.
Summer and Anna make an unusual couple, but in Newport nobody’s the wiser about two girls walking down the street, holding hands and shouting a lot. If there were ever two people who belonged together, it’s them, and by process of elimination, that’s left Seth with Ryan.
Ryan’s not letting Marissa anywhere near Seth.
It’s one thing to be philanthropic, it’s something else entirely to give up what you want.
Ryan *wants* Seth.
He won't be stupid enough to let him go.
-the end-

serialkarma thought up the Dawn/Marissa parallel long before I did cos she’s way smart (ask her about it), but dude, somebody’s got a big, old hero complex doesn’t he? No wonder he likes reading Marvel so much!

You know who's a big woobie? You. *ducks spear*
This is the portion where I ask you what you want me to write you for your dang bday.
I would like for you to write me some O.C. Just no goddamn Marissa.

I was looking for a little more than The OC. I *knew* that. Surely you have some other harebrained additions to what you want exactly.
