Keep your racist bullshit out my fucking face.

I knew someone else's ignorant shit was going to set me off. I fucking knew it.

Let's all just put it out on the table.

Blaise Zabini is BLACK.

Black, people. That means, not blue or purple, not white, not green or yellow or in posession of fins, wings, webbed feet or any other descriptor, but BLACK. He's English, but you know, he's black. Not African American, just black. He can't actually be thought of as, I don't know, BRITISH! because he's black. It's nice to know that nothing's really changed. It's nice to know that when people see you they just see the color of your skin. It doesn't matter that it's your name. Clearly all races should be identifiable by name, because black people are all named Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Neal or Craig David or Monifah or something.

Apparently, some people now believe that this is the end of the world, because heaven forbid a black person be hot. No, of course not.

There are no hot black people anywhere in the world. There's no Denzel Washington, Thandie Newton, Don Cheadle, Sophie Okenedo. There's no Angela Bassett, no Delroy Lindo, no Taye Diggs or Omar Epps or Mekhi Phifer. No Beyonce or Mos Def or Talib Kweli or Gabrielle Union or Boris Kudjoe or Nia Long.

No.

Obviously Blaise is now tainted because he's black. He can't be hot at all. And oh look, JKR made a joke with his mother about her being a black widow. It's all racially motivated though. I can see how Blaise must now be hideous and deformed. Heaven forbid Draco find him attractive. Heaven forbid that he actually have a brain because black people can't be talented except for in sports, and they can't be smart or make a honest living unless it's in music. I can see how Oprah and Nelson Mandela and Bill Cosby and every black MP or congressman is just affirmative action or a fluke.

And people say that racism is all gone.

Fuck that. And fuck you if this is your mindset.

I don't need your ignorant bullshit.

But don't worry. I'm not upset. I see how it is. It's always good to know where you stand. And no, this is not the part where everyone says 'I never thought that!' because if you did, ask your self would you even admit it?

Doesn't matter to me for "casting" purposes, which is all about Teh Pritty appearence.

[identity profile] ethrosdemon.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
with the DE as his bitches?

Did you ever read that ghetto lotr fic? with gandizzle? it would be like that, but Voldizzle.

[identity profile] ficangel.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
People are stupid. I would think that finally getting a definitive gender would cause more waves and alter more fics.

'Sides, Wesley Jonathan. Very much with the hot, and even with the faintly slanted eyes.

[identity profile] sparky77.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The second part of your remarks is harder to address, so I won't bother.

That's okay. I'm pretty sure that dealing with the second part is why god gave us booze.

admiting everyone has ingrained stereotypes
Exactly! Stereotyping and making generalization is a survival trait. It's how we then deal with the information are brain is telling us that decides whether or not we are intelligent human beings. A test most people unforuntately fail which brings us back to the booze.

And BTW - did you know that my nickname is Q? And for the record, I was never near your gum trees. You can't prove it!

[identity profile] rozza.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You are awesome, Z. I can't seriously believe that people are still stuck in the mindset that anything not white = bad. Intellectually I know they exist, but emotionally people like that are dead to me and therefore do not exist.

It's so obvious that Blaise is officially the Hot Guy at Hogwarts who could have anyone. Like Jude Law, before the ugly clothes, rapid aging, receding hairline and the headlines about cheating on his cute fiancee. Alas. Have you recast him yet?

I totally think Don Cheadle is hot. I mean, he's more on the "cute" side of hot than the "male model" side of hot, but nonetheless, hotish. And I love him too, so there.

I totally saw this coming. When I heard that Blaise is black (I still haven't read the book, though I do have an electronic copy loaded into my palm), I thought, "Good for JRK for bucking the "let's pretend everyone in books is white" racism, but I so dread the nastiness this is going to expose." Nice to see that my lack of faith in humanity (or is that lack of faith in white people? No, I think it's humanity at large) has once again been validated.

Best case scenario, this would make some people look at their own racism. But of course, people who actually *need* to look at their own racism never do.

Whoa, it was definitely not meant that way. The German equivalent is a rather neutral term (which is somewhat odd, because usually, German is a language that has a lot of political incorrect pitfalls).

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up.

[identity profile] babyofthegroup.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sure, if she'd said "the blacks". But just "blacks" is regaining popularity -- it's been reclaimed, much as "queer" has for LGBT folk. In fact, to most of my black friends, "African-American" is a condescending, racist term.

I'm guessing this has a lot to do with regionalism, though -- I grew up around Baltimore (*huge* black population); it may be different in the Deep South or up in New England.

[identity profile] canicula12.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's ridiculous, on all parts.

God, I'm disgusted. What does it even matter? What about Dean Thomas, and Angelina Johnson, etc.? Why Blaise? Blaise, just as a sidenote, is described by JKR as handsome: high cheekbones, slanted eyes...Man.

Lee Jordan, and yeah, at least one of the Quidditch Girls, um, Angelina (?) - I'm talking about the one that had hot threesomes in the secret passages with Fred and George.

What? That's really what happened, I swear.

Mmm... Thandie Newton and Angela Bassett. Yummy.

(also, I hate people. Really a lot.)

There'll always be people who are affronted by the fact that the mental image of a character in their head is different from the actual canon version- as Furiosity and others have said, there *are* black, yellow or pink Itallians *sigh*. It's just a fanon stereotype to have him white, since colored are a relative minority in the west. Since it's so *unlikely* that he could be anything but white...and then when it happens, its the end of the world.

I couldn't help it but after the train scene I could stop seeing a Blaise/Draco/Pansy triangle- Blaise seems to be extremely gorgeous *swoon* and this has just made my obssession with the niche pairing od Blaise/Draco, even stronger.

Actually what was harder to reconcile was Blaise's personality- he's not a complacent guy- rather rates on the same level as Nott, in aggression and prejudice. Oh god, now I have Nott/Draco/Blaise in my head- bad girl. The hate!sex attributed to Draco and Harry could now easily be transfered to a powerplay between the slytherin boys...

ah, the shitstorm commences. there are black people in the world? what? huh? i so don't believe you. nor are they world leaders, scientists, writers, and so forth. you lie!

i'm fond of Angelina Jolie as Mama Zabini (hybrid vigor represent!) and as far as who to cast as Blaise, i'm at a loss.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
As a note, please do not ever refer to minorities as colored.

[identity profile] sillyfilly.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
People are stupid.

I'd want to do Blaise even if he were purple. Le hawtt!

My first reaction when I read the description of Blaise was to burst out laughing, because all I could think about was how many fanfic authors just got Jossed by JKR. I would say that this doesn't affect my opinion of the character at all, except that would bit a little bit of a lie. It actually makes Blaise just a teeny tiny bit hotter in my mind. And when I say Blaise, I mean *your* Blaise, because there really isn't any other as far as I'm concerned.

I am still curious whether you'll go back and adjust physical descriptions and/or family details in your fics, or if you'll let them stand as written.

[personal profile] ravurian 2005-07-18 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)

I agree: Don Cheadle? Not hot. David Oyelowo? Very hot.

I'm in need of casting consensus for Blaise, though. How else am I to make suitable icons and shit?

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I am working on it right now. I'm working on the whole family as a matter of fact. Oh yis. I will make a posting annoucement, no worries.

Mwahahahaha! My photoshop is open and ready. I shall be very cross if there are only photos of limited quality available to work with. But I shall overcome. Or something. Heh.

[identity profile] hugglebunni.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus people are ignorent. Of course I was a little shocked(lol, with all the yummy Draco/Blaise I read I had a set image in my mind), but it certainly doesn't make a difference.

a) no you.

b) dude, I can only hope and pray. Seriously, WTF - I don't believe for a minute he grew that thing for a role. I think it was an involuntary follicular response to the bow-chicka-bow that accompanied Orlando's 'love' scene in KoH.

All hail Pavlov's Tache!

c) Craig David!

Crowd: Bo.

Craig David: Selecta!

Ok, I'll stop now Craig David.

*looks up* Referred to coloreds (a phrase used in several history books) as possible minorities in the west. I did not mean to imply the opposite - considering I am one of the minorities...

[identity profile] ignited.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
While reading about Blaise, there was a little voice in the back of my mind that was going "great, now the idiots will come out to whine" while the rest of my mind was rejoicing. Finally, getting information on a character who just had a name and house, and he's hot and smart, and people complain about his skin color? Why?! What is the purpose of that? It's ridiculous. It's also sad that I automatically envisioned the wank. Sigh. Fandom, oh how lovely and stupid you are.

I'm interested to see who you cast -- I've seen a lot of Tyson Beckford going 'round as a casting idea, but perhaps someone different?

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not Tyson. I got my boy. I am thrilled. Will post shortly. Correction: will try to since [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon and I are arguing over casting his mum.
