GOOD NEWS! (please to be sitting down first):

My mate, K, saw Jarhead at a screening a few nights ago, and rang me to inform me that my favourite scene in the entire film would involve one Mr Jake Gyllenhaal, copious nakedness completely naked, and a Santa Claus hat.

Christmas will arrive 4th November, people.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day, and while I totally agree, I wish that in some ways she was remembered not so much JUST as a symbol of the civil rights movement or for that one action, because I don't think enough people realize that she was actually really *active* in the movement, both before she refused to give up her seat on that bus and after. *I* didn't know that until college--actually, until college I thought the woman was *dead* because she was always portrayed as this old tired lady and she *wasn't*.

I've seen three decent films all year: Layer Cake, BB, and March of the Penguins. I have high hopes for the next few months: Jarhead, GoF, BBM, Narnia and Memoirs of a Geisha. Dam, I need me a 'Welcome to the Suck' icon.

No, I'm well aware of all the work she did behind the scenes of the movement, and I never think of her as just some older lady who was tired and needed to sit down. We're talking about 40-50 odd years ago when she was still in her 40s. I do agree that lots of people just see her as this person who did this one thing this one time, which is what makes her symbolic, and which is why I chose the word, but I don't necessarily think being symbolic means you can only represent having done one thing. Does that make sense?

Oh, yeah, I hear you. I just have a feeling we're in the minority as far as knowing what else she did. Or maybe I'm being unduly pessimistic. But I saw several posts on LJ the day she died to the effect of "OMG, she was still alive??" And that just makes me sad, you know?

Now, granted, I probably got the idea she was an "old lady" when I was a kid--when you're 7, 40 seems really old. But I remember being angry when I was in college and realized how very much my high school history classes glossed over about her. that's all.
