(no subject)

It's come to my attention today that fandom is such a fantastic teaching tool, that it has single handedly decreased increased my IQ by at least 20 points. I mean there are all kinds of words that I've learned here that I'd never have learned anywhere else. Words like: 'craptastic' and 'woobie' and 'pron' and and 'dicksmack' and 'syphilitic whoremonger' are among my favorites, which then begs the question, what words has fandom taught you that you didn't know before?

Bat-shit insane?

Clex?

Asshat?

Tinhat? <-- Now there is a great word.

Slash? <-- That was my first fandom word. *sniff*

Tell me. And while you're at it, also tell me how to pronounce your user name, because I saw someone else doing this somewhere and I was learning all kinds of pronunciations that I never would've come up with. For example [livejournal.com profile] hackthis is pronounced Ari. Are-ree. No, really, it's pronounced 'hack- this', not 'hackth-is'.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] yuletide LIVES! I am going to sign up just as soon as I figure out all the fandoms I'm willing to suffer an aneurysm for. Newbies here's a quick FAQ for you lot. Old heads, get to it.

If you punk out I have a .45 and a shovel. Seriously though, if you think you're not going to be able to do it, don't sign up and leave somebody else without, because that's just fucked up and wrong. The spirit of yuletide is not to sign up on a maybe, it's to sign up with a definite intention of following through and giving to someone else. If you're a really generous soul though and are willing to clean up someone else's fuck ups, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide always tends to need pinch hitters too.

Oh my god, the fandoms you lot come up with are priceless. *goes back to perusing list*

Squee, snark, fap, wank, adorkable.

Also, my username is "slod" (rhymes with "cod") "wick" (like in a candle).

[identity profile] avid-slacker.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wincest, drabble, slash, flist.

[identity profile] ethrosdemon.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
STFU, wtf, chan, lemon, yaoi.
I think most of mine are porn-related?

Also, my fl is jacked and is not displaying usernames, but I still knew it was you by your icon.

Aw!

God, I feel like utter shit. I am going to eat and maybe kill myself. See you in Slytherhell.

mrpeg, rps, wank (in the a non-sexual context :D), flame/shipper wars, (anonymous hate) memes, comment fic, ZOMG, omgwtf'insertsomethingfandomspecifichere', eg polarbear.

LJ was my first foray into fandom - I was such a n00b (ha, another one!) when I first got my journal: 'wait, they write x-rated fic about REAL PEOPLE!!?' =))

[identity profile] supergrover24.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Squick. pwn. felch (man, i can't believe i didn't know that one.)

t00b and w00bie, which are wonderful words I use in nonfandom context. People get w00bie. Not so much t00b, because it's indefinable.

Also, did you know tinhat (orig. tin hat) has a nonfandom source? It's what a WWI soldier called his helmet. [/useless trivia]

Basically, I knew nothing, NOTHING, when I came to fandom. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH.

My name? Er. 'a' as in acorn, 'phel' as in full, 'ant' as in...british aunt as opposed to ant like an insect.

AHAHAHA THAT MAKES NO SENSE BUT IT IS TRUUUUUUE.

[identity profile] epj.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good Lord.

mpreg, pegboy, *cest (where * = Win, het, and probably something I'm forgetting), fen, squee, bnf (of course), slash, "son of a fuck-me bitch" (which is my all-time favorite curse), pinch-hit for values of writing, con.

My username is pronounced "Em-joe".
ext_3190: Red icon with logo "I drink Nozz-a-la- Cola" in cursive. (hello cthulhu)

[identity profile] primroseburrows.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I forgot. My username is pronounced like it sounds. Prim as in trim, rose as in close, burrows as in, um. Furrows. I'm trying to figure out how to steal obtain [livejournal.com profile] primrose, because want to drop the last part of mine

[identity profile] rubymiene.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, definitely slash. Also squee, snark, squick, pwp, Malfoycest...

Ruby-my-en-knee

[identity profile] dorrie6.livejournal.com 2006-10-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Now, see, everyone has listed mine already.

Door-eee-six. Which is probably obvious.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_regina/ 2006-10-26 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Slash! When I first wandered over to [livejournal.com profile] theoc_slash, I thought I was going to find people snarking on the episodes like at televisionwithoutpity. I can't even express how big my eyes got when the first cut I clicked on was one of [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra's fics.

Also, mpreg, noncon, chan, yaoi, femslash, pron, squee, twincest, and a few I wish I could wipe out of my brain (todger? come on).

My username is pronounced just like it looks. Its full form is regina_terra, and terra is pronounced "tara" like Tara Reid. I'm told some people insert a mental pause or glottal stop at the beginning of _regina, because of the underscore.

Wecon is one I learned the other day. Took me a while to work it out, and then I felt stupid when I did!

ox-oh-nee-en-sis

And I am so excited about Yuletide - I feel sorry for everyone who isn't taking part, because it's like a big writing party. I have 24 potential fandoms picked out so far... And others I'm trying to decide if I'm brave enough to offer, because I want to be sure I can write something good for it, not something passable. Gifts should be good ones.

[identity profile] mahaliem.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I learn new fandom words all the time, but I don't remember my first, though it was probably fanfic.

ma - hay - lee (pause) em (This should be said in a Southern accent with the 'hay' part drawn out until it shrieks in pain.)

[identity profile] 142978.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
'Wibble' is the only term I can think of that nobody else has said.

Wait, no, I lied. 'Bzuh' is another one.
ext_842: (perso - school vs fandom)

[identity profile] etben.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
all of the above, and also the word that I am trying to bring into wider use: pornery: an adjective describing that state of squinty-eyed long-day fuck-a-bunch-of-you mean-ass cussedness for which the only remedy is porn.

[identity profile] raucousraven.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, MPreg and bukkake properly horrified me once I figured out what they were. (Thanks, HP. No really.) But I think the Britpickers made my day when they introduced me to the expressions "really corking" and "to faff [about]," because how can I not love the dorky British slang?

Please do not ask me to explain bukkake please do not ask me to explain bukkake please do not ask me to explain bukkake. We would both be too traumatized to leave the house. Ever.

I think the words I've learned in fandom have all been mentioned. Oh, I know! That Brits use "got" instead of "gotten". thank you, HP fandom.

My username is pronounced muses fool. um. yeah.

I still haven't figured out what to ask for for yuletide! wah!

[identity profile] ladyvyola.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Vyola: vee-OH-la or VI-oh-la, as your own accent and fondness for Shakespeare prompts you, though I personally use the first.

fic, slash, 'ship, *cest, woobie, Joss, retcon, wank, GIP, yis

newbie, n00b, flame, floves, OTP, OT3,

bukkake, snowball, felch (and many more that I've repressed, I'm sure)

tinhat, pr0n, squick, squee, bulletproof kink

*flail*, OMGWTF***, !!!1eleventyone!!11, aljdsalfsjl, "my *** cannot be textually rendered", "hot like a hot thing"

the construction "description!character-name" -- emo!Dean, action!Rodney, etc

teh, seXXors, roXXors, pwn

[identity profile] antheia.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I know there are a few, I just can't think of them. Slash, yaoi, twincest, stfu, homg, SGA. *koff*

an-thee-ah, like althea. but with an "n" where the "l" would be.

maybe i should have had less wine and more sleep?

[identity profile] sockich.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, fandom words. Let's see...slash, fandom, mpreg, Clex, Snarry, squee, woobie, wank, snark, flist, Wincest/twincest/Batcest/whatever-cest, yaoi, chan, squick, tinhat, bukkake, etc. etc.

You're right, fandom is a fantastic teaching tool. ;)

As for my user name, it's pronounced [sock-itch]. *g*

[identity profile] popcorn-orgasms.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
wank...i like that word.

Hee, all the sex talk I know I learnt from fandom. BDSM, voyerism, fellatio etc.

Also, fucktards. Great word. And noob. That was probably my first fandom word.

Stepps is pronounced steps. No-brainer.

[identity profile] lyra-sena.livejournal.com 2006-10-27 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lyra Sena" is pronounced: Cue-tee-pie.

The first word I remember learning in fandom that actually horrified me was felching. It still horrifies me.
