Brain dump.

So, like, I was trying to avoid having a massive brain dump in here, but then I said fuck it. My El Jay I can do whatever I damn well please. So.

I see a lot of speculation about Nathan being Claire's father, and obviously that's why she's 'superpowered' which, well, people, please, for my sake, use your brains.

a) Red herring, because if you're going by the teaser it's entirely too obvious, but more importantly

b) If powers are truly a genetic thing, which is what people want to show by pointing to Micah then you have to ask yourself where the hell are Mama Petrelli's powers? If Nathan and Peter got their powers from their parents, Mama Petrelli should be able to cause a fucking earthquake by stomping her foot, or possibly leap buildings in a single bound. Dude, Claire can't die, big fucking whoop. Peter is a friggin empath. He can be anybody. Nathan can fucking fly. It's like Rogue and Jean Gray having the same parents! And yet, as far as we know neither Petrelli parent can do more than shoplift and almost get indicted by their offspring. Just a thought.

c) Obviously Linderman is Claire's dad. Duh.

Last night [livejournal.com profile] antheia pointed me towards this post in [livejournal.com profile] starkeymonkey's LJ, which has to do with a fandom I don't participate in (Supernatural) and some person I have never interacted with in my life ([livejournal.com profile] la_folle_allure). Ergo, I am not going to pass judgment on her or on whatever craziness she's said about the show she was watching. I will not even address whatever idiocy she said about all black people growing up in the hood. *thinks of blood pressure* What I will say is that as a black woman this kind of stupidity goes down all the time whether or not fandom or society at large decides to acknowledge it. They're called stereotypes.

Black men obviously have rapacious sexual appetites. Black women are always welfare queens. Southerners all fly the Confederate flag, live in trailer parks and have red necks. Asian people are all brilliant and have yellow skin. Latino people all snuck across the border.

If you've ever had a less than charming thought about somebody else of another race based solely upon their race, guess what? You might have subscribed to a stereotype. You might've had a racist thought. Maybe you didn't put it down in your LJ for the whole world to say 'WTF' to, but chances are if you're breathing and reading this, you've done it.

This person, whomever she is, she's just stereotyping. She's just ignorant. It's clear she's never met a black person in her life. It's very likely she's never met a minority in her life, because if she had she would know that every person is different. I know it's shocking. But the difference between you and I at first glance? Only melanin. The difference in psychology and temperament and everything else -- monumental. Not all black people like rap. Not all Southern people like country. Not all Latinos like burritos. Not all Asians are number whizzes.

Don't make assumptions about other people based on erroneous information. Don't project your bullshit. Because you know what that's called? That's called ignorance. Sometimes we call it racism, too.

If you want to see what minorities go through every day, Sen. Joe Biden is so pleased that Barack Obama is articulate and clean, because people who were the head of the Harvard Law Review are normally very filthy. Or maybe just not black.

And no, not everything is about race, but sometimes it damn well is. If you're asking yourself why minorities continually get riled up about race, or 'play the race card' as it were, ask yourself when was the last time someone came up to you and commented on your race, or your parentage, or where you were 'really' from, or how well you speak.

From separate e-mails to [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma and [livejournal.com profile] antheia:

I get to share my burning shame with you that I was listening to Sophie B Hawkins 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover' on my iTunes (yes, I am a musical encyclopedia), not really paying that much attention, and then she was all 'I had a dream I was your hero' and my brain was like Peter? Nathan? The fuck?! Damn. It's times like these I wish I had some vidding skillz, cos I would ROCK that shit. It would be so awesomely cheesy with all the friggin touching Nathan and Peter do!

Also, randomly, Nathan was STUPENDOUSLY hot on Monday. I bet y'all thought I wasn't gonna comment on that, but I am only human.

Okay, now that that's done. Everyone run over to look at the FNL prettiness on [livejournal.com profile] azewewish's LJ. That's what I'm talking about.

Thank you for your support. lol

They just burnt down my shed, man. You are going to use my life insurance to buy a creepy clone? Well, that's just poetic.

Don't Nathan hate it makes the baby Petrelli irritable. ;)

Don't make me oppress you.

Sorry for the completely random comment, but I was actually waiting on Eccleston in this episode to hear his accent (I was worried they were going to make him American and totally go back on all the multi-national-ness they've developed) and that is his natural Lancashire accent. They did overdo it a bit with all the 'mate' stuff, though.

I miss all the cool conversations!

(also, sweetie, you are always well-spoken, but sometimes you are downright eloquent, and this is one of those times.)

i practically thwacked myself in the forehead for real today, when i realized that claire's dad must be linderman.

also, new FNL tonight!

Grunberg and one of the writers, with a bit of Hayden at the beginning.

WHERE IS THE COMMENTARY MASI DOES. I NEED IT.

[identity profile] boniblithe.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding C: you are so right it's painful.

Clearly people who think it's Nathan never watched enough Joss to know that it's almost time for us to meet the oft-mentioned but never met mystery character who needs a twist.

[identity profile] saturnalia.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as someone who grew up in Lancashire- yeah, that sounded pretty normal. (Admittedly I have a pretty terrible ear for accents, but it was definitely Northern-sounding.)

[identity profile] avid-slacker.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what I was expecting when I clicked the Biden link, but I definitely didn't expect him to be so blatant. Many people have gotten good at making veiled, vaguley insulting comments that can never quite be called out as racist without making the offended party look hypersensitive or militant, apparently Sen Biden has mastered that particular skill.

The fact that he has ever been in a position of power, it makes me want to weep.I'm so enraged by his stupidity I'd like to send a list of just the black politicians who are well-spoken and clean, let alone all black celebrities. Dumbass loser.

[identity profile] girl-wonder.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
You are crazy. This is how it breaks down:

Nikki is Claire's dad, she had a sex change when she realized that inside she was a woman and moved to Las Vegas to dance on the strip, failed at that, got addicted to pain meds and fell for a woman named DL. DL then had a sex change and they adopted a kid named Micah from a Japanese man who looks like Mr. Sulu from Star Trek and then they promised to keep it a secret.

Hiro is actually Nathan's twin, Peter is not his brother, the incest is invalid and they will have not!sibling sex a la Lost next episode.

[identity profile] girl-wonder.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
And no, not everything is about race, but sometimes it damn well is. And also, I had one of those kind of stomach clenching experiences when I was helping my grandmother in the bathroom at a Target store. Some woman was watching me and goes, "Oh, where are you from?"

Me, "Um. Southern California?" She gave me the blankest look ever.

Her: "No, where are you from. They don't take care of their parents here like they do in South America."

I mean, I know she was trying to say a nice thing, but I was like, "Hi, way to take a relationship you know nothing about and be able to pigeonhole it into something that those people do."

That's kind of how I feel about the whole bs over at lfa's journal. Whatever, it's not pitchforks, but it's something that grates on me just as bad.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Aw. *feels very pleased*

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's been in the back of my mind for a while now, but when people were all Nathan! Obviously! I rolled my eyes hard enough that they got stuck in my skull and had to just calm myself down a bit.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think it made me irritable, becuase it was entirely too obvious. Plus, that would kill my awesome theory (just created with much assistance from [livejournal.com profile] antheia) that Linderman is actually Papa Petrelli, who no one has ever seen a photograph of. Someone pointed out that you know, wouldn't Nathan notice this, and I pointed out that a) We don't even know if Nathan's met Linderman properly either and b) out of all the powers, what's missing? A metamorph. So, I am VERY pleased with myself. Really.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
pee ess: You know that would be the BEST video ever. With all the touching and the floating, and Nathan in his pyjamas, and Nathan cradling Peter after he passes out and Peter trying to save the cheerleader.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
There's more, he held a phone conference where he tried to 'clarify' what he meant. He was "misunderstood". The "black leaders" know he's a good man.

My thoughts? Fuck off directly.

[identity profile] silverakira.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
1. I totally defaulted to the "Nathan! Claire's father!" thing, but I know it's too obvious. If it were Linderman that would be AWESOME.

2. I'm not hardcore into the SPN fandom, but from what I've seen, [livejournal.com profile] la_folle_allure is basically a well-known bitch who hates on everyone and who a lot of people really do not like. Just FYI.

3. Fiiiive more days. I basically had a fit at the end of the episode on Monday, and my friend laughed and mocked my pain.

[identity profile] pixelarious.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so now I have that song stuck in my head. Thanks SO much.

(If people ever thought about the things running through their head before they wrote them down for the world to see, this world would be much quieter and much nicer.)

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hiro is actually Nathan's twin, Peter is not his brother, the incest is invalid and they will have not!sibling sex a la Lost next episode.

Do not tease the rabid woman. That's just wrong. Especially when you are talking about naked Pasdar-bits.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Me, "Um. Southern California?" She gave me the blankest look ever.

Her: "No, where are you from. They don't take care of their parents here like they do in South America."

*pets* I hear you, baby. I totally hear you.

"Where are you from?"
"My mother's womb, bitch!"

Unbefuckinglievable.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I've been going over this in other comments and my theory at this point appears to be based on [livejournal.com profile] antheia's brilliant conjecture that since we've never seen Papa Petrelli it's possible that he's Linderman. Imagine all that that implies. No one's ever seen Linderman on screen. We've only assumed that Nathan's seen him face-to-face. Maybe he hasn't. We've never seen even a *photo* of Papa Petrelli either. Claire doesn't die -- maybe Papa Petrelli doesn't either. Out of all the 'powers' we've seen there are a few classics missing -- maybe Papa Petrelli is a metamorph. *has been thinking a lot*

[identity profile] avid-slacker.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts? Fuck off directly.

Yes, and I would like to have a phone conference to make sure he doesn't misunderstand.

[identity profile] boniblithe.livejournal.com 2007-02-01 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I may have one mapped out in my head which looks remarkably like that; if not for starting grad school this week, I would actually have time to make it.
