It's raining men, hallelujah

I love new school military movies. Really. Like, I know a lot of people are all "gore, oh noes!" Or "Military, que boring" or "Violence is bad." To which I'm like, uh, maybe you are not paying attention to the breeding ground of hotass that military movies are, for example:

Two seconds of channel surfing When Were Soldiers produces both Sean McNamara from Nip/Tuck and Don Draper from Mad Men.

The HBO magnum opus Band of Brothers not only provided Damien Lewis of Life and Ron Livingston from Office Space, but also, Jamie Bamber (BSG), James McAvoy, Marc Warren (of every Beeb show ever), Donnie Walhberg, Dexter Fletcher, Kirk Acevedo (Alvarez from Oz), Malarky is now on ER, and Liebgott is going to marry Jennifer Love Hewitt, although, you know, that's not a real recommendation.ETA: And I forgot about Spiers! Holy shit, dude, Lt. Dan Spiers is like, Rambo does Batman! And he's played by Rufus on Gossip Girl. I know that seems weird, but way before he was Rufus he was Spiers, and damn, was he the man.

Saving Private Ryan brought you who? Matt Damon! And like, a lot of other people.

I don't even like Black Hawk Down, but it had Ewan Bremmer (Trainspotting), Eric Bana, Hugh Dancy, Ioan Gyrffund, fucking Jeremy Piven and Ewan McGregor.

The Thin Red Line had Adrian Brody, Jim Caveziel, GEORGE, it had GEORGE, Thomas Jane, Ben Chaplin and Alvarez from Oz again (Kirk was totally getting around, where is he now anyway?)

So, you know, the next time I shriek that the entire world must watch Generation Kill just remember its pedigree, not only is it whip-smart, horrifying and sickingly inappropriately with the laughs, but it's a military movie/series. I promise you, the guys are dead hot. Do you really need much else?

*This is not brought to you by the fact that sometimes I watch the Military Channel hungover. No. Not even.

ETA: It is very hard for me to detox from the Olympics when Michael fucking Phelps is every fucking where, because then I just feel compelled to watch and read when he's fondling strippers and making bets with supremely hot football players. Stupid boy! I do not want to write some story where Michael goes to Cleveland to visit Braylon and Ryan has a hissy fit, least of all because Ryan is so not the hissy fit type. He's very laidback about everything, but there might be some snarky blowback later on.

GMTA!

(of course, fools rarely differ, too...)

[identity profile] thisisbone.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this where I admit I've never seen Band of Brothers????

Because I'm a chickenshit?

Like, somebody would have to sit me down, with pictures, and tell me who gets killed and who doesn't. Because otherwise, I CAN'T TAKE IT. The only reason I can sit and watch Generation Kill is because I've seen Brad and Nate and Josh Ray and Rudy and Kocher all sitting around shooting the shit in flip-flops and blue jeans five years later. Otherwise, I'd be a BASKET CASE watching.

You have convinced me, seriously. All of your posts will have me checking out Generation Kill as soon as it releases on dvd ;) LOL. And as for loving military flicks, I've got an interest too. I viewed Three Kings again this weekend and for what it's worth, Tropic Thunder which I LOVE! LOL. But yeah, Black Hawk Down, Tears of the Sun, U871, etc. love those flicks. I love your enthusiasm; keep the posts coming and keep military-themed tv/movies in the forefront. Yeah! LOL

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You are telling me lies. Stop it. Wait. Are you serious? You are not.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
To what you said? WORD! When I heard Lt. Spiers was going to be on GG I was like, HOT DAMN! And then there was Rufus. Lily-livered (heh), fake-grungy, pining after poor little rich woman and I was stymied. I still am. Dude, Spiers would roll up there with his helmet cocked to one side and Lily Van der Woosen would wet herself.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You've never... you've never... YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BAND OF BROTHERS?!

I need a minute.

...

Okay, so, wait, seriously. Like, never, never? I don't even know what to say to that. Okay, you see how vehemently I insist everybody see GK? When I first saw BoB it was the only thing I watched for two weeks straight.

And as for telling you who survives and who doesn't, I could, but like, it's a long list, and in a way it detracts if you know what's going to happen before it happens. It won't stop you falling in love with every last one of them, nothing does. It really is the kind of thing you need to experience as it happens. It's not pretty though, you are totally going to be broken when it's over, but all the awesomeness you see in GK? The attention to detail, the production values, everything that says someone put time and heart and attention into making that series the best thing it could ever be? HBO perfected that technique with Band of Brothers.

*gulp*

I'm there, I'm ready, I'll watch it.

But I still want to know going in who dies. Hell, I had to brace myself for Pappy. The anxiety would totally overshadow my enjoyment. It's weird, I know, but I've learned what I can put myself through and what I can't.

My dad fought in WW2 in the European theater (England, Wales, France and Belgium). I have NO DISTANCE from it, you know?

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
16 December 2008, Generation Kill will be on DVD. Yes. I have it pre-ordered already. Also, your icon makes me sigh. Adrian Pasdar needs to be in a military movie. He needs to be naked.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
If you love Generation Kill I can promise you three things from Band of Brothers a) you will love it b) you will not regret watching it c) it will hurt. Like a lot.

The anxiety would totally overshadow my enjoyment. It's weird, I know, but I've learned what I can put myself through and what I can't.

If you want to know who dies, check out the character and cast listing from Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Band_of_brothers#Cast_and_characters). It's not that I don't want to tell you, it's just that after a while you start to lose count and then it's just another one and another one and people leave for injury but not death and it's --- it's complicated. And very draining.

I think, when you see BoB, you're going to see a lot of similarities to GK, the introduction of the boys, the way they bond, the way they suffer, the way they put each other first, but BoB will make you even more invested. It's kind of mind-boggling.

does top gun count as military? LOL

[identity profile] xanatosdecrion.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He was in that one; albeit for a few short minutes. Sexy m.f. LOL ;)

[identity profile] thisisbone.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds very intense. I'm pretty invested in GK...and they lived. Yikes.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Intense. Yes. Good word.

Re: does top gun count as military? LOL

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot! And yes, Top Gun totally counts

Ladies, first episode - "I only get what's passed onto me from godfather and the only word he gets is from the BBC."

I'm sold.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Is J. Lo really dead, sir?

[identity profile] elzed.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude!

His little face....

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait until you get the full-on Ray experience. And the Brad experience. And the Nate experience. And Pope. And Walt. And Garza... and Shady B... and Rudy... and Pappy. The love I have for this series is immensely profound.

Also, you are my second convert this week. I beem with pride.

[identity profile] elzed.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You may beam indeed. I am loving this, and I've barely started (and I strongly suspect that for a not-terribly slasher girl like me, the porn opportunities are limited, to say the least. Sigh. At least there is a lot of hunky manflesh to ogle)!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well the thing is, first and foremost, GK is a series about guys. It's about how they live together and relate and deal and support each other. It's not 'romantically inclined' as it were. You can slash them if you want (which, you know, hey, hotass), but that is not the primary purpose or even the primary draw. It's almost like an after thought in a way. When I first put together my GK pimp post I really just wanted to talk about how I wanted to climb Brad and ... yeah, okay, you get the point there. Or how I think Nate is perfect and idealistic and I want to put him in a bubble of protection...

I could talk about this a VERY long time.

[identity profile] elzed.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I can get on board the Brad-climbing, yes.

And ITA about the guys vs the romance, yes.

A small thing. Looking at the guys (and bear in mind I'm in the first half of the first episode), the Marines look very white - I mean, obvie, not entirely, but a vast majority. Is the Marine Corps notoriously less integrated than the Army (because correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the US military recruited an awful lot of ethnic minorities).

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait until you see Brad shirtless... holy cow.

With regards to the series seeming more white than anything else, I do agree. I don't know a lot about the military's track record here, but I do know that Recon boys aren't regular Marines, they're specialized like NAVY Seals, which probably changes up the ethnic make-up, and you're only dealing with the people the author met, so you have Garza and Pope, who are Mexican, and Baptista, who is Portugese and one black guy, so you know, I'm not surprised.

[identity profile] elzed.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see how that might work. Didn't realise that Recon were a Marine elite (although now you mention it, and seeing as they are spearheading the assault on Baghdad, it makes an awful lot of sense), but I can see the logic. And yes, the author would be the filter.

Makes me want to read the book now.

Damn, as if I needed more distraction...

I can see Band of Brothers on the horizon...

[identity profile] chicklet-girl.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even like Black Hawk Down, but it had Ewan Bremmer (Trainspotting), Eric Bana, Hugh Dancy, Ioan Gyrffund, fucking Jeremy Piven and Ewan McGregor.

My folks and I saw it in the theatre, and then three years later, I bought my stepdad the, whatever, the Super-Duper Extra-Special Mega-Awesome DVD set (it has a making-of that's as long as the movie itself!) so we re-watched it. By the time William Fichtner and Jason Isaacs (HEARTS) showed up, I said out loud, "Who isn't in this movie?" We had completely forgotten Ewan McGregor, which I think is a crime in Scotland.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Every fucking English male actor of age was in Black Hawk Down... which actually makes it a lot like Band of Brothers. But BoB had the hotter overall appeal IMO ;)
