Southland for the Motherfucking WIN *\o/*

So. Southland. Best network show this year or best network show this year? Seriously, it's very hard to watch this show at the same time I'm supposed to be decompressing for bed because then I get all excited by Cooper just BREATHING.

I've been on line for about 20 minutes and am currently involved in two conversations and a txt message babble about last night's episode.

a) OH MY FUCKING GOD, COOPER!!!

B) OH MY FUCKING GOD, COOPER!!

C) If Cooper wanted to try marriage again, he could try with me. I liked his wife automatically, and I highly doubt that she's the one who ended it. I think he decided he just couldn't do it anymore. Oh, Cooper. *pets* ETA: Upon some convo with [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma I have reversed this opinion and now think Cooper's wife ended it, and basically told him "I love you, but you're gay" and he was all "Am not!" And she just was like "I'm not arguing this point. You are. Sort yourself out. This doesn't mean I don't love you, but it's not happening." And so that kind of forced him to go to therapy.

d) All that back-story kind of had me hugging the TV every five minutes. Cooper was married. He hurt his back. Ben's got a sister named Olivia. Fucked up families. Cooper being a cop or digging a ditch. They only get $30k? The hell?! And then there was Ben and his asshole dad. When he walked out, I immediately decided that he went to Cooper's where Cooper was all hopped up on his drugs, and they drank and then Ben fell asleep on Cooper's sofa and Cooper put a blanket on him. In the morning, Ben makes Cooper eggs.

e) I have so much stuff I want to write for this series. It's just... everything so damn intense all the time. I get that same vibe I get from GK, which is that everything's so damn intense all I want to do is write them happy. Which you know, not much happiness on the show. Then again my writing is taking five. I miss it, but I understand.

f) Not enough Adams.

g) I hate the C. Thomas Howell character, and I really think his partner needs to get a new partner and when he called in a panic, I really thought they'd shot somebody by accident. And yet, Tom Sizemore was perfect casting.

h) So, Tom Everett Scott I don't know the name of your character, but I was damn shocked to find out you were hitched the way you were up on Kristen Datillo. I remember when she was all NBC IT Girl, she's had wayyyy too much work done. Anyway, Tom, you were so flirting with her, I mean damn! No wonder Adams was giving you The Suspect Eye

i) Cooper and the way he treated the transvestite shop owners. You couldn't have played that more beautifully Michael Cudlitz. You win. You so fucking win. And so do the writers, well fucking done, y'all.

In conclusion: SOUTHLAND BITCHES!!!

I wish that every week was Cooper and Ben week, with special awesomeness by Regina King. Oh, wait, it kinda is!

I am very sorry to hear that NBC is doing an NBC(or a FOX, depending) and just yanking Kings from the schedule. Supposedly until June. Yeah, whatever. Fail Ben Silverman, but then again, that's all you do anyway.

ETA: CRAP! My bad about the cut tag SNAFU, folks! Hey, does anybody have a copy of The Frames 'For the Birds' CD they'd like to share with me?

I hate the C. Thomas Howell character and I really think his partner needs to get a new partner and when he called in a panic, I really thought they'd shot somebody by accident.

My hate for Dewey is LEGION. I can't see any redeeming qualities about him, so unless they're revealed in the next episode, I'll be forced to reach into the screen and kill him off myself. YES, I CAN *SO* DO THAT. YOUR DOUBTS MEAN NOTHING TO ME, ZAHRA.

Cooper was married.

I loved the off-handed way he revealed he'd been to therapy when his marriage broke up. "I worked through some things." Oh, I'LL BET YOU DID, COOPER. And his respectful treatment of the transvestite shopkeepers made me flail muchly.

When he walked out, I immediately decided that he went to Cooper's where Cooper was all hopped up on his drugs, and they drank and then Ben fell asleep on Cooper's sofa and Cooper put a blanket on him. In the morning, Ben makes Cooper eggs.

Yes. This.

Dewey is a total wanker. But everyone else is a brick and I love them all.

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!! *KERMIT FLAIL*

I love this show so fucking much!! I really can't get over how Cooper is just tossing out these incredibly personal tidbits at random. He's all, blah, blah therapy, Beverly Hills, okay rich boy, oh and I was married. BAM! How ya like me now? So. Fucking. Entertaining.

At this point I fully expect him to be giving Ben a ration of shit about his fucked up love life at some point, and then just be like, yeah you don't have to worry about that shit when you do guys. KAPOW!

[identity profile] mir8lle.livejournal.com 2009-04-24 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I'm glad you're all up in this show as well, because it makes me flail with crazy love. I love Ben. I love Cooper. I love Dewey's long suffering partner and would not begrudge her burying him in a shallow ditch somewhere.

Southland WIN! I concur with A though I and would like to add COOPER! That is all.

e) I have so much stuff I want to write for this series.
Dooooooo it! I want Cooper to have all the sex in this world!

However crappystupid NBC may be, I love that they have two cop shows where two guys from Band of Brothers get to play the two most awesome characters EVER. \o/

This DOES seem to closely resemble a dating dance. *nods* And I am firmly behind all plans that involve Ben falling asleep on Cooper's couch and them hanging out lots more, and then perhaps not even realizing they're sort of married until someone comments that (like with Brad and Nate) when they are pissy with each other, things are bad, SO PLEASE DON'T FIGHT, BOYS.

[identity profile] mandaspeaks.livejournal.com 2009-04-24 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Dewey needs to GO!! Last week I was all OMG HE'S RETIRING BUT I THOUGHT HE WAS A MAIN CHARACTER and sure enough, there he was again, being a jackass. Again. DIE.

I lovelovelove Cooper and the way he oh-so-randomly drops details of his personal life into his conversations with Ben.

And yes. Ben + Cooper. Please.

i've not seen southland yet so i quickly scrolled past the spoilers and cannot comment on that, though i do look forward to when i can read your very well-thought out responses. ;)

i don't have my copy of 'for the birds' handy, but you can listen (and download in RAM form) the whole album at their website here (http://www.theframes.ie/v4/music/ftb.shtml). but perhaps you already know that and RAM is no good for you in which case, never mind.

hopefully you'll get it from someone else sooner rather than later, but if not, i'd be happy to send you a copy when i can. also, let me know if you need the hookup for any other frames ish.

OK, so I'm going to add my name to the library's hold list for Generation Kill and start watching Southland because there's no one I trust more than you with show recs. Sincere thanks, and OMG where am I going to find the time???

[identity profile] kismeteve.livejournal.com 2009-04-25 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
It took me an episode or two to really get in to Southland, but I was just sucked in by Cooper. I really, really adore him. Like Charlie Crews. I just want them to be happy.

(and Ben McKenzie is a total hotass in that uniform.)

[identity profile] mikhale.livejournal.com 2009-04-25 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I watched the show for Ben McKenzie and stayed for all-around general awesomeness. And if you write Cooper/Ben... god, the thought of it just makes me shivers. It's too damn hot to comprehend.

There's pointless man-talk about shitty dads and mumbled apologies that passes as flirting somewhere in there, right?

How does Adams manage to squeeze an hour's worth of awesomeness in one Suspicious Look? It is a physical impossibility but she does it anyway.

Seriously. Cooper/Ben.

I melted when I saw that; Cooper was so very caring. And the subtly guiding hand in the small of the back!

This is a beautiful image to have. Thank you!

I was surprised to know Tom's character's married too.

Also, the scene w/John and the shop owner had me all, "WOW! he's so kind!" And the way he and Ben both referred to the shop owner as "her" really, really made me love them both.

Also, the scene where John "divorces" that couple?? LMAO! I mean the domestic violence part was not at all cool or funny but the way he did it? cracked me up.

As for Dewey, yes he's a major dickhead but I'm glad he's there as he's a great foil for John's character, imo.

YES!! On all counts. 3 eps in and I am positively *hooked*. Cooper just fills up the screen, the room, the world. And I'm so happy that Ben Mackenzie finally has material that shows off his chops. Intense. Adams is amazing, and Tom Everett Scott's character definitely needs a minder. Remember in the pilot how Adams kept telling him to make a call for the mother of the missing girl? Repeating it calmly and firmly?

And I love the young guys, trying to looking after the witness to the shooting, who was wondering if they thought that she could be a cop?? And how they said that they thought that she could make an *outstanding* cop, and just the throw-away line that she's a smart one, yeah?

I don't know. I just know that Thursdays at 10 o'clock just became Must See T.V. again. Woot. :)

COOPER IS SO RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME AND HOT, especially when he's *in charge*. I think this episode was basically the "Check out all the many ways Cooper can be in charge and awesome" show, with a side of, "Check out Ben's many awesome reaction shots."

I've been enjoying Southland, but between the weird direction and the terrible lighting and the "bunch of medium-build white brown-haired dudes" casting, I can't tell half the characters apart from episode to episode. Who the heck was that guy chatting up the sister of the OD/stabbing victim?

And didn't Dewey retire in 1x02? They had that whole roast and everything! It was like the "Dewey retires and is an asshole" hour! Did these episodes air out of order, or what? Especially since I'd've sworn Ben DID tell Cooper the circumstances of his learning to shoot (such-and-such happened, then my friend's dad started taking us---I don't remember exactly, it definitely didn't match the story he gave this week).

::I iz confuzzled::

so i just finished watching this weeks episode, and while I liked the first two episodes, this is the one that made me a convert. This episode was just epic, it had everything. EVERYTHING... murder, humor, bentlys, d list celebs (both real and meta), guns, police chases, beautifully expositioned ( not sure if that was a word before just now) back stories, TRANNYS. What else does a show need? I agree with you that it's all intense all the time, which is kinda why it's awsome, i think this show wouldn't work if it wasn't this intense. I also really liked the way it was shot. Anyway I hope the rest of the season or whatever they have at the moment, is as good as this.

This most recent ep was so awesome, although they've all been. And thanks to you and some of your enforcers (errr, [livejournal.com profile] sparky77) I am totally hooked on this now. Yeah, it was hard. Twist my arm.

It is really well done and well written.
