Stutter stop.

Everwood
Black Sheep and Green Peas

Bright hates peas.

He hates brussel sprouts and lima beans and succotash and pretty much every vegetable known to man, except potatoes. Potatoes make french fries, and so, they’re okay, but for the most part Bright hates vegetables. When he was little he used to mash his peas and push them around his plate trying to hide them. His mom never fell for it. Sometimes, if he thought his parents weren’t looking he would put his peas on Amy’s plate. She never said anything; she’d just stare at him with big eyes and eat his peas.

He wound up paying for it later.

When they moved Amy to the other side of the table, Bright went back to mashing his peas. Over time he resorted to all sorts of tricks: hiding them under his mashed potatoes, in his napkin. Once he put them in his milk, but then his dad found out and he wound of drinking the peas in his milk. It was really disgusting.

The first time he went to dinner at Colin’s house, Mrs. Hart made chicken fingers and fries, and peas. Bright couldn’t believe his luck. However, when Mrs. Hart left Colin, Laynie and he alone in the kitchen, Colin reached over with his napkin and carefully collected Bright’s peas in it. He did the same for himself and Laynie, and then went to the bathroom.

He came back 30 seconds later with a huge grin on his face. Bright didn’t even know what to say, so instead he gave Colin his last chicken finger with the extra catsup because that’s what best friends did.

They were eight.

Eight years later things have changed, a lot.

Colin still comes to dinner, but now he sits next to Amy, and he eats his peas quietly. Bright watches as unobtrusively as he can, but Colin’s got his arm in that sling and you need two hands to eat peas. Apparently his mom didn’t think about that, so Colin’s there chasing his peas around his plate, and Bright wants to do something to make it better. He wants to take Colin’s peas and throw them away or mash them up and drink them in his milk. Anything to make it right. Except that Bright can see the same thought crossing Amy’s face, and he knows that it’s not his place. Not anymore, but if things had gone differently...

Colin was going to leave Amy before. He was going to leave Amy for Bright, and there really was a life before. Before the accident, before the lost memories, before Ephram Brown and Dr. Brown and comas and all sorts of things.

Bright wasn't always the odd man out.

The problem, however, is that life before doesn’t count.

There’s only now, and there are peas on Bright’s plate; and the only person who can get rid of them won't even look him in the face.
