The O.C. season two fic.

1. Was Memphis Belle always as gay as it appeared on telly this morning? Clearly it came out before I knew about slash or was even out of puberty, but wow, gay.

2. I am doing some de-friending based on a shifting of my fandom interests. It's nothing personal because you're all fabulous, but I think I've pretty much given up the ghost on Smallville.

3. I slept for a total of two hours last night. Talk about feeling the pain. I think goldfish have longer attention spans than me right now.

4. My darling [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra is having a bad day, so I wanted to try and write something to make her feel better, but I'm drier than the Sahara right now. Nevertheless, I have rallied admirably.

The O.C

My Boyfriend Left Me For Some Chick Who Got Pregnant By Somebody Else Because He’s Got a Martyr Complex, and I Had to Go to Portland to Get Over It by Seth Cohen

Portland is not Tahiti. It's not even close. As a matter of fact, Portland’s about as far from Tahiti as Seth can get without going to the Arctic and freezing his ass off; and he’s being hysterical again, but who wouldn’t be hysterical, what with living with Luke and his gay dad and his gay dad’s boyfriend. It’s like a TV show on NBC or Showtime or something: My Not-Really-Good-Friend Luke and His Gay Dad, a spec script by Seth Cohen.

*

Seth can’t tell if Portland has been good for Luke or not, but he seems pretty happy and scruffy, and he’s kind of dressing like Tommy Hilfiger’s does the emo thing which is a little strange. If anything, Luke’s gotten even dorkier than he was before, but apparently he’s playing water polo at his new school, and he’s got friends, which is better than Seth’s got right now. When Luke goes out with his friends, he always makes sure to drag Seth along.

*

Luke’s gay dad is actually pretty cool for a dad. Not like Seth’s dad, but for a dad who was run out of Newport for liking other guys, yeah, he’s pretty cool. As a matter of fact, when Seth showed up on his doorstep, and Luke stared at him as though he’d grown two heads, Luke’s dad nudged Luke and asked if he was going to invite Seth in.

That earned him a lot of points in Seth’s book.

*

How Seth wound up in Portland is – well, it’s anybody’s guess really, because he was going to go to Tahiti. He had the map and everything, and then he took a right turn out of Newport instead of a left, because he really couldn’t get to Tahiti on the beef jerky and Corn Pops he’d brought along. It took him a whole day just to get to San Francisco, because, well, it seemed like the place to go for a swinging bi-sexual man who’d left his girlfriend and boyfriend behind.

Correction: for the coward who’d been left by his boyfriend and couldn’t dump his girlfriend to her face. Not that anyone could really blame Seth for not dumping Summer to her face, because only a very, very stupid man would ever dump Summer to her face.

Anyway, he docked at the Marina in San Francisco looking and smelling a little worse for the wear, and he had lunch in Pacific Heights because nobody left for Tahiti without enough cash to eat some burgers when they got there. And then... and then he got a cab to the BART station and went to SFO, and Alaska Airlines was running this $39 one-way special to Portland. Not that Seth wanted to go to Portland, but it was the next available flight out of town, and the guy at the ticket counter was really hot. Plus, Seth had left most of his stuff on the Summer Breeze, and everything was just too much.

So he left.

Again.

*

And that was how he ended up in Portland.

It took him a little longer to find Luke though -- there were a lot of Wards in the phone book.

*

He’d been at the Ward’s place for a week when he called his mom and dad, because that was just a conversation he did not want to have, but Mr Ward said he couldn’t stay any longer unless he called them and told them where he was. At least he didn’t say that Seth had to come out to them, which was cool because Luke’s dad had picked up on that one way before Luke had.

It had taken Luke two days just to believe that Seth was still dating Summer, and he had been too busy laughing his ass off to catch the part about Ryan and Theresa and Marissa and Eddie and Julie and Seth’s granddad, and for the first time ever, Seth really, really envied Luke.
Not because he was a water polo player who shaved his chest and got dumped by his anorexic girlfriend for Seth’s boyfriend, but because his dad was cool and smart and lived with his gay boyfriend, Bradley, in a really nice house with a guest room just for Seth and his bag of tee shirts and comics and his iPod.

*

Seth’s mom cried the entire time they were on the phone, and his dad yelled until Seth put the phone down and left the room to get some ice cream from the freezer. When he came back Mr Ward was on the phone, and Seth couldn’t hear anymore yelling so he assumed his Mr Ward was on the phone with his mom sobbing in his ear. He felt kind of bad about that, but better Mr Ward than him.

Mr Ward didn’t say a lot besides ‘sure’ and ‘I see’ and ‘okay,’ and when he hung up he said it was okay for Seth to stay.

*

Every time Luke asks him if he’s going to go back, he shrugs, because really there’s nothing for him to go back to. He’s lucky that Luke’s easily distracted by video games and comics and Seth’s half-hearted attempts at friendship.

Luke is no Ryan, which is actually a good thing, because if Seth left Portland, he’d have to find someplace else to go, and now that Ryan’s back in Chino and Summer’s probably sent a death squad after him his options are a little slim. At least he likes Portland, with its rain and trees and cool girls and guys. He could've ended up some place a lot worse.

He didn't really want to go to Tahiti anyway, and he’s not sure what it would take to get him to go back to Newport at this point, probably a miracle.

Memphis Belle is gayer than gay. I remember being infatuated with the movie in high school and thinking to myself (even though I had no idea about slash) that those boys liked each other as way more than friends. Eric Stolz and Harry Connick totally wanted to have crazy monkey sex in the barracks.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I only got to see about fifteen minutes towards the end, but they were all in the plane together, and my inner slasher went agog. I was like 'they make movies like this'? Writers don't have to do all the work? My god. We'll all be out of jobs at this rate.

[identity profile] lalejandra.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
OMG.

Hi, I totally didn't realize this was here when I hit you with improv!

OMG.

Okay, so Luke's Two Dads? Best new cable show evah!!

(Did you see [livejournal.com profile] torchthisnow's entry about how Seth Cohen is Adam Brody's Josh Schwartz imitation?? Hee.)

only a very, very stupid man would ever dump Summer to her face.

So so true. That's my girl.

Mr Ward said he couldn’t stay any longer unless he called them and told them where he was

That's so 90210!!!! So MSCL!!! ACK!!!

He’s not sure what it would take to get him to go back to Newport at this point, probably a miracle.

!!!!!

Okay, I love this. I love Seth's view of Summer, which probably isn't too far off the mark, and I love that he went to SF, and I love that he flew to Portland and went to Luke - that's a spoiler, right? He really does that? So weird. Stupid Seth - but smart, because Luke really is, like, the antithesis of Ryan, and that's probably a good thing at this point. And I love Luke's easy acceptance, and his laughing at Summer/Seth, and. Well. Everything.

Also, how much do I love Luke's Two Dads? SO MUCH.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)

YAY! I'm so pleased you liked this, sweetie, and yes the Portland thing is part of the spoilers for the new season (Nov 4th?!), didn't I send them to you? They're also all over this weeks (or maybe last week's EW), the one with the MS-CL retrospective.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately I don't think it comes with Luke's Two Gay Dads though. Sorree!

re: Memphis Belle

[identity profile] plumsnickety.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. I was obsessed with the movie when I was in junior high, but I saw it again a couple of weeks ago and omg with the slash. Everyone's half in love with Danny (and why the hell not?), Rascal and Virg are all but shagging in the ball turret, and I won't even get into the traumatic love affair between Val and Phil.

I almost want to search out fic, but it's the same thing as Band of Brothers, I just can't cross that line. More's the pity because, *guh*.

And an extra special hee b/c Ben Browder of Farscape is in there for a few seconds showing off his scary NC accent. I point and laugh.

I vaguely remember seeing it when I was younger, but then it was on this morning when I was getting read for work and I was like o_O

[identity profile] wellowned.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
oh wow. i like. like... really. and this is so what i expect of the second season. really.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this, thanks!

[identity profile] thepouncer.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
I read that spoiler in EW and almost died of the squee. Portland! Of course Seth is with Luke!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
When I read that my eyebrows practically crawled into my hairline.

[identity profile] dolimir-k.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure you don't put your fiction behind a lock, but if you do, will you please keep me on your friendslist?

I really do enjoy your fiction, even though I don't always tell you that.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Should I ever put my stories behind lock and key, I will be certain to do so :) And I'm so pleased you like my writing, thank you for reading it!

y Boyfriend Left Me For Some Chick Who Got Pregnant By Somebody Else Because He’s Got a Martyr Complex, and I Had to Go to Portland to Get Over It by Seth Cohen

*dies*

You wrote it! You rock.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what I'd planned for it to be, but this just wrote itself with Seth and Luke and Luke's Two Gay Dads.

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree whole-heartedly with [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra here: luke's two dads! :D! <333

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs*

Who knew everybody would be so into that?

[identity profile] sefkhet.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke's Two Dads! And I get the feeling you're in for a whole slew of comments that say exactly that, but Luke's Two Dads!

Might I suggest a sequel? My Boyfriend Ran Away To Portland Because He's Got Abandonment Issues, so I Had To Go and Get Him Because I've Got A Saving People Complex by Ryan Atwood. I would worship at the altar of your fic.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs*

That's so going to be Ryan's story. I may have to write it eventually, you know.

[identity profile] elzed.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Admirable rallying indeed, hackthis. I love Luke's cool gay dad (he should turn up more often in fanfic), and even dorkier Luke. And I loved this: Not that anyone could really blame Seth for not dumping Summer to her face, because only a very, very stupid man would ever dump Summer to her face. How true.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I never gave Luke's dad much thought until, oh, today. But I can see him becoming more prominent once the season begins.

[identity profile] monkey-pie.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
man, i am jonesing for the reappearance of Luke's Gay Dad. this just makes me itch for season 2 even more. thanks!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Days remaining in Sept: 13
Days in October: 31
Days til The O.C. premieres?

Too many.

[identity profile] tanizard.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I loooove this, even though there was no actual Seth/Ryan in it. Is it wrong that I think my absolute favourite line might be the title, though?

Anyway, this makes me feel a lot better about not getting to see The O.C. special that everyone has been going on about, and not getting to see Season 2 until god-knows-when next year.

The only thing left to add, really, is: Luke's Two Dads!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch the special myself, although I'm thinking that was a good thing as it'd just make me more anxious about how long it is until the premiere.

[identity profile] ttcarter.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
He had the map and everything, and then he took a right turn out of Newport instead of a left... Makes me think of Bugs Bunny (I should have taken a LEFT at Albecurque) and that's a good thing.

Not that Seth wanted to go to Portland, but it was the next available flight out of town, and the guy at the ticket counter was really hot. So, very Seth.

*Falls off chair and dies*

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself :)

[identity profile] chicklet-girl.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Was Memphis Belle always as gay as it appeared on telly this morning?

Yes. Yes, it was. It's the only explanation for my pre-slash obsession with it. Let's all take a minute to ponder how slashtastic everyone was in their little bickeriffic dyads: Phil and Val. Virgil and Rascal (Reed Diamond and Sean Astin! Eeeeeeee!). Everyone else and Danny. *ponders*

I love your story. The minute I read in Entertainment Weekly that Seth was going to end up Portland, I squeed and thought, "OMG! [livejournal.com profile] hackthis is going to love this!"

He didn't really want to go to Tahiti anyway, and he’s not sure what it would take to get him to go back to Newport at this point, probably a miracle.

So, do I need to bribe you for a sequel using a Ryan=Miracle icon? 'Cause I'm going to be downloading that Photoshop 30-day trial....

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ryan as a miracle? Because his Martyr complex just isn't big enough? You hush. *shakes head* I have to admit though, when I read the spoilers my brain just went crazy. Also, was Danny Eric Stolz? Because, yeah, him and Billy Zane, and the two pilots were totally doing it...

[identity profile] chicklet-girl.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi, my name is Chicklet, and I can't speak precisely. I meant Seth would consider Ryan's getting him back in Newport a miracle. *V8 Moment*

Also, was Danny Eric Stolz?

Yep. And the fact that everyone completely lost their shit when he was hit by shrapnel in no way indicates any kind of subtextual homoeroticism. And neither does the constant teasing regarding sex and virginity mean Virgil and Rascal holed up in the woods beyond the airfield after the champagne-soaked celebration.

*sigh* I'm gonna end up searching for fic, aren't I? Dammit. *stamps foot*

[identity profile] plumsnickety.livejournal.com 2004-09-18 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna end up searching for fic, aren't I?

*snerk* I'll happily tag along.

[identity profile] 60schic.livejournal.com 2004-09-17 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
And would said miracle be a very scruffy(translate-hot) Ryan showing up at the Ward's place? I'd vote for that. Nice little fic for an exhausted person.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-21 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm thinking about it.

[identity profile] crimsonclad.livejournal.com 2004-09-18 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
PORRRRTLAND!

I want entire epics about Luke and his Dad, and I've only managed to write a tiny faux snippet, but now you're helping and hooray!

Luke. And his Big Gay Dad. My heart is bursting with joy!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-21 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I think Luke's Gay Dad may turn out to be the best discovery since Captain Oats.

sequel?

[identity profile] dtkokoro.livejournal.com 2004-09-19 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Because, seriously dude, you need a sequel! Or I prequel or something, cuz it's horrible to just leave a story like that! *tear* And I love the idea of Seth living with a gay couple and their more than likely gay son...hehehe

Re: sequel?

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2004-09-21 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Strangely enough, I'm actually considering a sequel, so we shall see.

[identity profile] tasheila.livejournal.com 2004-09-22 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Write a sequel where Ryan begs him to come back, please?

I luved it. :D
