The countdown has begun.

1. There have been a lot of new friendings happening recently, so you know, introduce yourselves! Why are you acting like you have no home training? Your mums would be appalled.

2. I got an OC calendar in a gift exchange and I bought the S1 DVDs yesterday. I believe this is now the time for me to ask for a divorce? Is this how I works again? I did see last night's episode though, and very much adore Sandy and Ryan. [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma and I were discussing the non-hotness of Lindsey's mom and we've chalked it up to her not being a Newport resident. Hot people only in city limits. Also, my Ryan-adoration really knows no bounds at this point.

3. It seems that everybody and their grandparents is in the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide/sekritholidayperson crunch, so I thought I'd throw up some inspirational (well, for me) music. At least the stuff is fast-paced.

a. Turin Brakes - Pain Killer -- I heart Olly and Gale, not because they're friends of friends, but because they write wicked songs with lyrics like 'You need something better than the bacon and eggs/ The creaking in the walls and the banging in the bed'

b. Elbow - Buttons and Zips and Elbow - Snooks (Progress Report) -- I couldn't decide between the two, and since I'm trying to coax [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana into the Elbow fold I thought I should put up both.

c. Gomez - Here Comes the Breeze -- Okay, this isn't really fast-paced, but to know The 'Mez is to love them, and I love this song, so just download it!

d. Jay Z - 99 Problems -- Because, yes, I know, not getting these stories done on time does feel like 99 Problems.

e. And because nothing I do is compelete without them: I present Ryan Adams singing about hookers (Tina Toledo's Street Walking Blues) and Jeff Buckley singing in French (Je n'en Connais Pas la Fin)*

Go forth and Merlin speed!

*The quality on this recording isn't as good because this was made back before his mother decided not to kick people off Napster for looking for rare stuff. Not that I was bitter when that happened, no. Of course not. Also, yes I did name that HP trilogy after this song, because Jeff is singing in French!

Hi, I've lurked in your journal off and on since reading Telegraph Avenue sometime last year--funny story, I only read the story because of the Ryan Gosling casting as I hadn't actually seen any episodes of the O.C. at the time. Anyway. I loved the story and I got tired of always following [livejournal.com profile] daraq's recs to find out when you posted new HP stories. I love the little niche you've created in the HP universe.

me me me

Hallo. You posted my favourite Gomez song and Jeff Buckley singing in French. *friends you at lightspeed* I think our CD collections would like each other if they met at a party, and that idea was so incredibly stolen from Nick Hornby. Music and words are my two true loves and they have never let me down yet. (I await the incestuous threesome with anticipation.)

I do like films, but don't see them often because I'm lazy and broke. However, if the film has subtitles (Afterlife) /warrants close analysis (Memento) /is Canadian (Wilby Wonderful), I am far more likely to haul meself off the 'pooter. Extra seeing-it points if said film is part of a film festival, although style points may drop into the negs on account of the pretentious.

My interests and such are public on lj. Look me up (or not) for more details. And I do hope mum's happier with me now!

I can't even remember when I friended you..... trying to think if it was recently. I think it was when you asked for Zach icons, and then I just added you. Sorry. ;-) And of course there is the GREATNESS that is Telegraph Avenue that lead me to your journal in the first place. Best.... OC Fic..... Ever.....

Heh. Let me know what you think...

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

What is is about Jay-Z that just screams for mash-up tracks. Danger Mouse and Linkin Park (?!) and now 99 Balloons!

Hello! I'm sorry I'm so late in introducing myself, even after the prompt. Old lurker habits die hard, apparently. *blushes*

I <3 popslash, HP slash and sometimes het. I've lurked for over 2 years now, and I'm finding that even though I thought I'd seen it all in that amount of time, actually participating is a whole 'nother ball game. I'm a college student, and a serious amatuer musician. Anything else you want to know about me, just ask! :D

I love love love your Thousandth Man universe and Contract. I'm not sure how I stumbled here back in the day, but I think it had to do with being recced over at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van.

You curl and play in a pipe band?! I am in awe of you... I go to a Scottish themed college, and grew up close enough to the border to pick up CBC, so both of those activities hold a special place in my heart.

What types of gigs do women's only pipe bands get, if I may ask?

[identity profile] prairiedaun.livejournal.com 2004-12-22 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Usually we get the same gigs as the men (or we would normally, but my band is going through a "transitional phase", meaning we had a shitload of people leaving and political problems, so now we're very small but trying to regroup and build again), plus we get gigs like playing at Run for the Cure (a marathon to support breast cancer research) and other women's events (women of distinction, girl guide events...)

We also tend to get asked to play at curling events like the Brier and the world championships when they're in Winnipeg and Manitoba (which thankfully happens quite a bit).

What constitutes a "normal gig?" The only places I've ever seen pipers play is at my college (like I said, we're Scottish themed, so we don't even need a reason to bust out the pipes!) and my church. Or maybe a town festival, in the same both the Native Americans play wooden flutes in and peddle their CDs with generic nature pictures on the front. :D

[identity profile] prairiedaun.livejournal.com 2005-01-04 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
*rage* My long comment failed to post. This makes me sad.

A "normal gig" is generally a parade, usually a small town parade like the Morden Corn and Apple Festival or the Altona Sunflower Festival. Other regular things we do are shows at a particular old folks home, the Scottish pavilion during the Folklorama festival and a Rememberance Day ceremony at the legion where we practise (as a "thank you for letting us practise in your basement" kind of thing).

Less regular gigs are usually cooler- about 10 years ago the band played at a Paul McCartney concert, and last year we were extras in a movie called "The Saddest Music in the World". That was a lot of fun.

While not gigs, per se, there are also competitions (which you may be familiar with) where we compete as a band, and then we can compete solo if we wish.

Awww! I'm sorry your comment didn't post. *hugs*

I'm so fascinated by your pipe band!! Thanks for putting up with my incessant curiousity. :D

A few more questions, if you don't mind: Did you get to meet Paul McCartney? When does the movie come out? And what competitions have you been in?

[identity profile] prairiedaun.livejournal.com 2005-01-04 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The Paul McCartney thing was about five years before I joined the band, but apparently the others did meet him, and they got autographs and such.

The movie is out on DVD now, but it might be hard to find. It's a Guy Maddin film, so I'm warning you now that it has really strange elements (the heroine's tape worm talks to her, the other woman has glass legs filled with beer...)

Personally I've competed at the Winnipeg Scottish festival, the Selkirk Highland games, Bands on the Boardwalk, and the Regina-Saskatoon competitions. There's talk this year of us competing in the States again.

Kids, I hate to be a party pooper, but if you could continue this conversation in one of your own LJ's I would appreciate it.
