Last musak post of the year.

You would not believe how hopped up on drugs I am now. Wow. I had really hoped to write a little holiday story for you lot, but I think my ability to write has decided to take the rest of the year off since it's earned itself a holiday, so you know, even more music.

Apollo 440 'Don't Fear the Reaper' -- Apollo 440 are club music. Not overpowering grime, nor hideously tedious techno, just really cool club music. This cover of the song by Blue Oyster Cult is just very fucking cool.

Bono feat. Jools Holland 'If You Wear the Velvet Dress (live)' – A couple of points about this song a) I love Jools Holland b) I love Later with Jools Holland c) This song is creepy as hell, and I mean creepy in that quasi-stalkery, 'Every Breath You Take' type way. D) That doesn't stop it from being stupidly hot.

Eels 'Novocaine for the Soul' – For everyone who is about to endure more family togetherness than you think your liver can take.

The Fugees 'No Woman, No Cry' -- You have to have balls the size of melons to cover Bob Marley, and many many years ago, The Fugees were indeed that big and that good. I love this cover, which is really saying something, because the original is nothing to sneeze at itself.

Gil Scott-Heron 'The Revolution Will Not be Televised' – For everyone who thought that Nike came up with this tag first, allow me to show you where it really came from. Gil Scott-Heron was part of a movement in the late 60s/early 70s by American black musicians to come up with politically significant music and performance art that reflected the changing times in their community (i.e. civil rights). Heron, along with contemporaries The Last Poets, worked in an effort to capture the tumultuousness of the time period, hence The Revolution Will Not be Televised.

Gorillaz 'Dirty Harry' -- I love Gorillaz. I love the concept. I love Murdoch and Russell and Noodle, and every guest star that steps up on this album. On this song, I just love the children singing> ETA: Thank [livejournal.com profile] adrasteia!

Jet 'Back Door Santa' – The title alone is absolutely priceless, but I love this song because I really really like Jet. They're dirty, ornery, and Australian, and they rock out hard. If that's not enough for you, again, I can only point you to the song title.

Pink Martini 'Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler' -- I do not want to work. I just want to sit around all day at this fabulous café in Montmartre and drink cappuccino, and read Moliere, and smoke. That's pretty much how this song translates. Except without the Moliere. What can I say, I love French music.

Regina Spektor 'Us' -- They made a statue of us, And it put it on a mountain top/ Now tourists come and stare at us/ Blow bubbles with their gum/ Take photographs for fun, for fun

It's working now, it's just been put on a different sharing program.

But listen for yourself!

The Nenes - No Woman No Cry (http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2V3U70P94OT8J2L1T0E8KSU1FY).

I absolutely love the bridge and, as a completely useless fact, this song is number three on my Top 25 Most Played list.

I actually have both albums, because they really are that fabulous, but thank you so much for thinking of me :)

Took the Reaper cover, thanks so much!

I always feel bad about downloading music off of people's posts. :)

You should never feel badly, that's why it's there, to be shared and loved!

I love Pink Martini! It's so refreshing to see that someone else knows about them. They're so multicultural. :) Have you heard "Hang On Little Tomato"? It's in English and it's so cute.

So are Public Enemy the offshoot of that same movement?

[I don't really know much about this movement, so sorry if I get my facts wrong or something.]

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-12-23 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call them an off-shoot as much as I'd say they were decendents thereof. Lots of people say that the Last Poets and Scott-Heron are the forefathers of rap, moreso than Grandmaster Flash or the Sugarhill Gang, but from Flash and the Sugarhill Gang came the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J and Def Jam and Run DMC, and yes, Public Enemy :)

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2005-12-23 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
True.

Your post prompted me to make my own music post (http://www.livejournal.com/users/kiki_miserychic/51684.html).

See, I never knew that. Thanks for taking the time to explain it. :)

Dude, this is awesome. *takes everything* One note- you have a typo on 'Travailler'. I was confused for a moment.

Thanks for the music! I've snurched a copy of all of them...Velvet Dress is sooo creepy, but sooo good!

It's been ages since I heard that cover by the Fugees. Recently, I've been enjoying another version of 'No Woman' by a guy named Matt Anderson. (YSI here (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=04FJXFN77UEBP2BDKDVS42PJ17)) And another bonus Matt song for you - 'I Play the Fool for You' (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=01PXAQ8OQP49101WPZ4QUSR1BF). Might be a bluesy for you, but I promise it's good.

Did you know that the Fugees have reformed and were playing London last month? I went to see them with my wee cousin and they were absolutely fucking amazing. It was like being back in the 90s, only with a different cultural rhetoric. (Dear God. I am so pretentious. I just used "cultural rhetoric" when talking about a hiphop band.) Google tells me they were in Bratislava (...) yesterday, so they may be around if you fancy seeing them live -- which I would highly recommend.

Ohhh...I love the Apollo 404 cover! Thanks!

I am full of random information, so I am always glad to be of assistance. :)
