Last musak post of the year.

You would not believe how hopped up on drugs I am now. Wow. I had really hoped to write a little holiday story for you lot, but I think my ability to write has decided to take the rest of the year off since it's earned itself a holiday, so you know, even more music.

Apollo 440 'Don't Fear the Reaper' -- Apollo 440 are club music. Not overpowering grime, nor hideously tedious techno, just really cool club music. This cover of the song by Blue Oyster Cult is just very fucking cool.

Bono feat. Jools Holland 'If You Wear the Velvet Dress (live)' – A couple of points about this song a) I love Jools Holland b) I love Later with Jools Holland c) This song is creepy as hell, and I mean creepy in that quasi-stalkery, 'Every Breath You Take' type way. D) That doesn't stop it from being stupidly hot.

Eels 'Novocaine for the Soul' – For everyone who is about to endure more family togetherness than you think your liver can take.

The Fugees 'No Woman, No Cry' -- You have to have balls the size of melons to cover Bob Marley, and many many years ago, The Fugees were indeed that big and that good. I love this cover, which is really saying something, because the original is nothing to sneeze at itself.

Gil Scott-Heron 'The Revolution Will Not be Televised' – For everyone who thought that Nike came up with this tag first, allow me to show you where it really came from. Gil Scott-Heron was part of a movement in the late 60s/early 70s by American black musicians to come up with politically significant music and performance art that reflected the changing times in their community (i.e. civil rights). Heron, along with contemporaries The Last Poets, worked in an effort to capture the tumultuousness of the time period, hence The Revolution Will Not be Televised.

Gorillaz 'Dirty Harry' -- I love Gorillaz. I love the concept. I love Murdoch and Russell and Noodle, and every guest star that steps up on this album. On this song, I just love the children singing> ETA: Thank [livejournal.com profile] adrasteia!

Jet 'Back Door Santa' – The title alone is absolutely priceless, but I love this song because I really really like Jet. They're dirty, ornery, and Australian, and they rock out hard. If that's not enough for you, again, I can only point you to the song title.

Pink Martini 'Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler' -- I do not want to work. I just want to sit around all day at this fabulous café in Montmartre and drink cappuccino, and read Moliere, and smoke. That's pretty much how this song translates. Except without the Moliere. What can I say, I love French music.

Regina Spektor 'Us' -- They made a statue of us, And it put it on a mountain top/ Now tourists come and stare at us/ Blow bubbles with their gum/ Take photographs for fun, for fun

'Novocaine for the Soul'

Love that damn song right there.

A friend sent me Back Door Santa on a holiday mix (which rocks, actually, if you like I'll send you a copy), and everytime I hear the title I just get wrong, wrong wrong thoughts in my head. If Santa does that I don't want to know!

I know! When I saw the title I was like, dude, they are not really singing about that, are they?

Me too!

You know, I have a cover of 'No Woman No Cry' sung in Japanese by the Nenes. It was actually my first encounter with the song in any form. It's very good.

French! *takes and thanks and then craves a cigarette even though I don't smoke anymore, I don't*

P.S. Hopped up on drugs is the best time to smoke, too.

Thanks for the music! I've been greedy and took each and everyone except for Gorillaz (because I have them already).

Gorillaz 'Dirty Harry' doesn't seem to be working.

I've taken Us, and The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. Such a cool song. How did you find it/how come it's on this list/why do you like this song?

I've rewritten this comment like five times, but the short version is that Gil Scott-Heron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil-Scott_Heron) was part of a movement in the late 60s/early 70s by American black musicians to come up with politically significant music and performance art. Heron, along with contemporaries The Last Poets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Poets), worked in an effort to capture the tumultuousness of the time period, hence The Revolution Will Not be Televised (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Revolution_Will_Not_Be_Televised).

LOL. Enabler!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-12-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean to tell me you've never heard the original version?

[identity profile] issyadore.livejournal.com 2005-12-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Le gasp. Moi?

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-12-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Retro, babydoll!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2005-12-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)

Dude, here's the Gorillaz song.

YSI is the Internet Explorer of file sharing websites. Everyone uses it but it's a pain in the ass that doesn't always work.

Oh no! Now I've heard it, but my first experience with the song ever was the Japanese version. And, I will probably be skinned alive for saying it, I think I like it more than I like the original. *hides*
