Pimp, babble, rec, NATHAN!

I thought this week would be better than last week, but I was fucking wrong wasn't I? *sigh* Happy thoughts... happy thoughts...

I saw Howl's Moving Castle recently, twice, because well, shit, was that a goddamn awesome movie or what? I also saw Sky High, which was cute, in an American Harry Potter sort of way, but is there fic for Howl or no? Also, if Children of Men doesn't leave you poleaxed in your seat, man...

Also, today is NATHAN DAY! Okay, every day is Nathan Day 'round these parts, but since it's Monday it's doubly Nathan day. All I want to do is talk about the awesome Petrelli-centric writing being done by [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore and [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 (or I would be if the latter would write some more damnit (*smacks with anvil*). There was some sort of mass proliferation this past weekend though and I highly recommend When He Sings by [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch (incest) and Peter Pan (gen, Nathan & Peter) by [livejournal.com profile] linaerys which are both absolutely CRACKING stuff. Bless you both many times over.

Their writing spawned some random thinky thoughts about Nathan, which I'm sure will come out in my writing soonish (what you thought I was just going to tell you? HA!) But I will say that upon second viewing of Godsend I noticed two itty bitty things that, you know, might be worth taking notice of.

a) Nathan says he loves Peter not once, but TWICE. Most of us were so brain-fried by the kiss and the 'I love you, man', that I think we missed when Simone's sitting at Peter's bedside and Nathan says it then. He's getting all excitable about the fucking painting and why did she tell him (bitch!slap), and then he says something like 'I love him and I'll be damned if I'm going to sit around and watch him die!" Everyone who said Nathan didn't love Peter can suck it. TWICE.

b) When Nathan and Hiro are having their BFF forever moment, what does Nathan say he wants to do? He says he wants to HELP. When has Nathan ever said he wants to help anybody ever? Never. Isn't that what he and Peter are always fighting about in the first place? Nathan's refusal to help even though he could set a world record for saving cats from trees? And yet, ultimately who makes Nathan want to do said helping? Peter. Not through the continued haranguing, which
obviously Nathan's built up an immunity to after all this time (which I hate to say, has some swiss cheese sized holes), but because Nathan is fucking desperate and he wants to be able to feel like he's actively doing something to bring Peter back to him.

Apart from the massive BroYay of that statement (Love you, Tim!) you cannot deny that Nathan loves Peter dearly and will do anything that might help him. He may not scream it from the rooftops, but he is truly devoted to Peter. In fact he's more devoted to Peter than he is to his mother or his wife or anybody else. Everybody else Nathan loves with qualifications (He loves his mom, because she's a nutter and his mom; he loves Heidi because she's his wife and the mother of his children, and because, hello fucking guilt!)

Peter is Nathan's lodestar.

For all the idolizing of Nathan that Peter does, Peter is truly Nathan's man on the pedestal. He is the only untainted and pure thing Nathan has. Every time Nathan tells Peter 'no' he's trying to keep him safe, and every time he gives in, he's trying to act at his buffer. That's love, y'all. More than any words, or questionable touch, it's all in the actions and Nathan is a man of action.

Yes, you know I'm gonna write a story about that.

There's some Howl's Moving Castle fic on the yuletide archive - some quite nice pieces as far as I remember, though nothing quite grabbed me enough to read in its entirety.

I've still not seen the movie - I'm always iffy about movies of books I like, and when it's animated too... I must brave it one day.

Clearly I was excited and forgot the english language, because that sentence is supposed to read ...Nathan flew up to catch him, the question is did did the shock of Peter momentarily absorbing his gift throw him off and that's why Peter fell?

As for Peter being a self-centered bitch, you probably don't want to get me started on that. For all intents and purposes he was almost an only child (I subscribe to what [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 told me about the producers using Adrian and Milo's real age gap.) So Peter's been raised not only like an only child, but when necessary he can play 'the baby of the family card.' I've been there many times when people were saying Peter's the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I tend to say that *no* Peter is one of the best con arts since sliced bread. I wrote a whole AU where they're con artists (think Heroes does Ocean's 11) (http://hackthis.livejournal.com/419729.html?mode=reply?) specifically around the belief that Peter is SO Nathan's little brother, because Nathan will sell you anything, he'll lie through his teeth, but he'll do it with charm and you'll probably feel a little like you got conned. Peter's appears so sincere and honest though that when he's lying to you, you can't tell. He's just that good. You know what he's saying doesn't sound right, but because he's *Peter* you choose to buy it. That's SKILLS..

I generally only write Peter to better understand Nathan, because my god is Peter a whiny bitch sometimes.

AWESOME! Thank you :)

I have this fear that Nathan won't be on at all tonight. Seriously. We got so much love last week that I think Tim's just gonna fuck us over and I will be vedddddddy displeased. Also, every time I see that icon I crack the fuck up.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I kept hearing such good things about the movie that I decided on a whim to check it out, and it was so good that I watched it twice which I don't think has every happened for something I didn't outright buy. Of course I haven't read the book yet, but I plan to soon. The book/movie thing is really very tricky. It's so friggin rare that they get it right.

Mort importantly, Happy Birthday. Did you get your balloons?!

I love your analysis!

Noes! I know it'll probably have minimal Peter/Nathan action, 'cause Nathan's still in New York and Peter's on his way to Nevada, but. No Nathan at all?

[identity profile] scribblinlenore.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll make a pact with you! If you write more, I'll write more. *spits into palm*

Obviously, but you know it'd be hell in everyday life.

A: Fuck you, that's mine!
B: Oh, yeah, what makes you think you're entitled?
A: Because I'm me, dammit!
B: Fuck you, that's my cookie!
A: Says you and whose army?
B: I love you, but I will choke you. Don't make you go blow something up.
A: Whatever, wear your safety goggles.

I love the book, but then, Diana Wynne Jones has been one of my favorite authors since I was in elementary school and Howl has always been one of my favorites of hers. I enjoyed the movie, but was a touch disappointed at how deeply different it was despite trying very hard not to compare them. I plan to see the movie again sometime to try to appreciate it entirely on its own merits; I have no idea how the book will see to someone who has seen the movie first.

I grew up on Diana Wynne Jones' books as a kid, but I still like to dip into them (and of course they weren't all around back then). You know there's a sequel, right? Castles in the Air. Also worth reading.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Balloons? From you? I didn't, but I appreciate the thought!

WHAT?! *stomps off to complain to TPTB*

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If I dedicated an iota of time to other stuff as I do to this, I'd totally be Supreme Empress of Everything, with harems all over the world.

[identity profile] heidi8.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you need a tiara?

And Ari would probably be of some use in managing the LA harem branch? Do we know when a new season of Entourage starts?

[identity profile] ethrosdemon.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. This sounds like my marriage.

(Look, I can make jokes now! And I didn't even need therapy.)

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know it's not even a proper new season? They shot 22 episodes and then broke them off for a *hiatus*, but episodes are very much in the can and collecting dust and will be airing after The Sopranos when they come back in April. I know it doesn't seem quite kosher in terms of subject matter, but they're hoping to retain some of the Sopranos audience for Entourage, because for all the accolades and critical acclaim, Entourage has a very small audience.

[identity profile] oboros.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Howl - yummy in any form. yay for Heros night! (this comment brought to you by your friendly lurker)

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That is because you are a Slytherin and this is what we do. Laugh in all the wrong places and mock tragedy. Somebody died? When does their estate go on the market? Dog got run over? The bones didn't puncture my tyre did they?

[identity profile] heidi8.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So they're not shooting anything anymore? Are they done with the series?

HBO's airing schedule confuses the hell out of me - I know that seasons aren't the same anymore as they used to be, and in a way the December break was really good for a lot of shows - I know a number of people who caught up on Heroes during the hiatus, and I picked up, er, SPN (I know you're not a fan, but...) which wouldn't have happened if the break had been only three or so weeks. But honestly? A 30 week break?

WHY DO THEY DO THAT?

: uses icon of disgruntlement

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-01-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they're not done with the series. At least not as far as I've heard. Most likely they're just trying to get more bang for their buck since Entourage fans are only used to get 12 episodes or so at a clip. December hiatus is one of those things that's either awesome for a launch (because there's no competition on) or awesome for killing (if you run a show when nobody's around to watch, hey, it's still on) or good for catching up on other things. Like you said though HBO has always run on HBOs own schedule and it's working for them. There's even a method to their madness (don't compete with your own shows, only have one or two new things at a time so you don't detract), it's just an irritating method.

Nathan may occasionally behave in a way that says that Peter is a burden, but Peter is the person that Nathan watches out for, that he goes out of his way to help. Nathan may bitch about Peter being a pain in his ass, but Nathan doesn't hang Peter out to dry.

Or, um, what you said.
