I'm on my Desert Island. I have music!

So. This month's Frankenstein Mix 11.0 is your desert island mix. 15 songs for the rest of your exceptionally tanned and sweaty life. This is a lot harder than it sounds: just me, a desert island, Adrian Pasdar and a vat of SPF 30 (Hello, so not dying of skin cancer!). What? It's my island, I can have whatever I want. Except more than 15 songs apparently.

The Sand in My Shoes Mix
The Sand in My Shoes Mix

'Adore' Prince -- I thought I would choose 'I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man' or 'How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore' –- but neither of those talk about burning his clothes and smashing up his ride. Something about that makes me crack up every time.

'Come Pick Me Up' Ryan Adams -- This was my introduction to Ryan, and I've used this song to convert more people to him than you can shake a stick at. I also used to practice playing this song on my guitar Saturday mornings while hungover. Good times.

'Dink's Song' Jeff Buckley -- All the Jeff songs in the world, and I choose a cover that most people have never heard. I thought about using a song off of one of his albums, but there's a beauty in Jeff's live's stuff that you don’t get always get in the recording and I'd want that when the sun was me driving into hiding beneath the palm trees.

'Dollar Day (Surprise, Surprise)' Mos Def -- Ah, Mos. That's all I've got. I adore Mos Def the poet, the rapper, the actor, the activist, the father of five. I chose this song, about a woman found in a house in New Orleans a week after Katrina, because it's says a lot about my dissatisfaction with the current government. My island would have a totally different government -- The Government of ME!

'Fake Plastic Trees' Radiohead -- Uh, it's Thom. Do I have to talk about how much I love Radiohead? I mean I will... but I thought you'd all heard me talk about that enough. I chose this particular song though, because, well, it's beautiful. And heart-breaking. It's about the things we do to make other people happy, and apparently Thom laid down the studio vocals after seeing Jeff live and then promptly broke into tears.

'Good Morning, Good Morning' The Beatles -- Dude, a desert island with Adrian Pasdar. Yes, it's a good morning. Even if this is that black humor sort of good morning.

'I Want to be Evil 'Chiwetel Ejiofor -- I adore Chiwetel Ejiofor. He's a brilliant, talented actor, and he looks AWESOME in red stilettos. Him covering Eartha Kitt is some next level of awesome, like the sunset on the beach of my island, where we do tequila body shots.

'Know Your Rights' The Clash -- I don't think rights are gonna be a big problem on my island, but just in case.

'Landed' Ben Folds -- Everyone's lost a friend to their significant other at some point, because that significant other was a little mental and controlling. This is about your friend realizing what's going on. This NEVER happens.

'Last Day of the Miner's Strike' Pulp -- Jarvis singing about England in the 80s. Brilliant. I will not be missing pastel leather on my island. It will be banned.

'The Long Way Around' Dixie Chicks -- Something for my Adrian clone. Oh c'mon, you know it's a clone, like Natalie Maines would take her GPS off of the real one for two seconds. Well, I sure as hell wouldn't.

'Mitwa' Udit Narayan, Alga Yagnik, Sukwinder Singh -- I don't know where I got this song from. I don’t know who provided it. All I know is that all last year this song did more to levitate my mood than all that beer I ingested, and believe me I ingested a lot.

'Mr. Jones' Counting Crows -- I loved this album when it came out. I'm not a fan of anything past their third album, but this song has a lot of memories for me.

'Ten Crack Commandments' The Notorious B.I.G. -- Ah, Biggie Smalls. Your music has a lot of memories for me too. Plus, hello, the commandments are fucking important. I highly doubt I'll be slinging coke on said island, but there may be some plants or something. Plus, capitalization is key, maybe I'll export to someone else's island or something. i accept payments in all coconut and banana denominations.

'You Can't Always Get What You Want' The Rolling Stones -- Does this song need an explanation? Ever? Choirs? Riots? Men on bended knee? Seven minutes of bliss.

This is not a bonus because hello, it's not a song! HAHAHAHAHA! This is actually an interlude of Jeff live at Sine where he talks about playing Musical Chairs and the music for CBGB's, well, it's fucking priceless. 'Musical Chairs' Jeff Buckley --

Took a couple, can never resist. But I refuse to download any more Beatles this week. That's my rule.

Many thanks!

If my internet connection were working for longer than five seconds, I wouldn't take any of these.

BECAUSE I HAVE THEM ALL, for which I toast your good taste.

I mean, I would totally take Underground as my Ben Folds Five song, but Landed is acceptable as well.

I started this, but I found that I couldn't get my list to under 30, so it's probably going to take me a day or two to post it. I am amused by the fact that we both have Prince, Jeff Buckley, Ryan Adams, Dixie Chicks, and The Rolling Stones on our lists.

'Mitwa' Udit Narayan, Alga Yagnik, Sukwinder Singh
How happy am I that you know and like this song? So very, very happy. (It's all about friendship and sedition and sticking it to the government too, so that should make you additionally happy.)

i just want to say that i really enjoy "adore" and i LOVE "come pick me up" like burning, but i really, REALLY enjoy that you put them together, because i had a thought a while back about how i should have a playlist about destructive love affairs with both of those songs on it. :)

[identity profile] calikali.livejournal.com 2007-03-18 07:42 am (UTC)(link)

Well maybe not the ride. I got to have yo face all up in the place.

I adore Adore, one of Prince's greatest, and just a perfect song.
