Is too much to 'splain, I will sum up
Now that I have slept on my initial Kings squee, my non-spoilery thoughts are as follows:
I'm not a Jack fan. I find him tiresome. I can see how the actor was on Gossip Girl, and I do not mean that favorably. He's going to have to work much harder if he thinks I'm giving him David EVER. I'm no longer interested in pairings where I only love one side and think the other person is an unworthy tosser* (Lex/Clark, Draco/Harry).
* And I say this knowing exactly how this storyline is supposed to go. Right now this actor is failing in convincing me that what is supposed to come will be potrayed effectively.
Rev Samuels, Silas and David though? LOVE 'EM. Like hardcore, pet incessantly love. Rev Samuels/David? Yes. Silas/Rev Samuels back in the day? DOUBLE YES.
You can holler at me in the comments if you want to discuss my spoilery thoughts though.
ETA Does anybody have a copy of Lisa Hannigan's 'Sea Sew' or the new Doves 'Kingdom of Rust'? I am totally in the market here.
ETA#2: I have been running around calling Reverend Samuels Reverend Walker, I don't know why. More importantly, why didn't anybody tell me I had it wrong?! Y'all are failing on me. I bet you'd let me go out with my skirt in my knickers too. More fail. Seriously, though, why did I think his name was Rev Walker? Did we even HAVE a Rev Walker? I can only assume that the hotassery fried my brain.

The phrase 'Man Up' is ringing resoundly here, and to me, Jack doesn't seem like he's 'manned up' at all. Do I think David is 'the chosen one' yet? Absolutely not, but I see more potential there. Doesn't mean I won't change my mind along the way, just that at this moment I am wholy-unconvinced.
I loved its interpretation of Jonathan/Jack giving David his clothes and his sword (his promotion/position in the military).
I suspect I would've felt differently if Jack had willingly given this to David, but he didn't. Silas gave it to David; Jack just bitched. And that, at its heart is what annoys me about Jack. He fucking whines about *everything8. Bloody hell, I know you're the Prince and you're used to getting everything, but the military should break you of at least some of that. If you want something, show you are worthy of it. I'm not saying stop fucking men if that's what you do, that's genetic, but lying about in your den of sin? Boring. If I want that Chuck Bass does it far better.

I really liked that the show changed this. Especially considering that we know that Jonathan and David become allies/friends/lovers later on. I wonder how the show will handle that. I also think that his bitching doesn't stem from not getting to do whatever he wants in the military but rather, not getting the respect that he's earned from his father (I hope we get more backstory w/r/t Jack's service in the military). About not *looking* strong enough for the part, I think it's weird that Sebastian Stan looked more substantial on Gossip Girls than he does on Kings. He's probably not who I would have cast for the role, but Chris Egan also seems a bit slight for David (though he does fit the "ruddy-cheeked" bill).
I agree with the Chuck Bass comparison though arguably, the drunken whining in the premiere can be chalked up to a combination of the trauma of being taken hostage and Silas's embrace of David over Jack (the straw that broke the camel's back maybe). There was the nightclub scene, but I wonder how much of the party boy persona is put on by Jack in an (apparently futile) attempt to hide his sexuality from his father. I also saw a brief clip of Jack in uniform speaking to his company (I assume) on NBC which gives me hope that Jack will, as you say, "man up."
