I love Brad's anger and frustration - not at Nate, but Nate gets to feel a brush of it - at being so helpless when it comes to Nate. All his wanting and needing and not being able to be with him and so everything just builds up. And sometimes when Nate laughs and treats it like a joke (not that he thinks it's a joke, but he doesn't realize what's gotten to Brad right at the core or he doesn't want to see it, because his own need is too much to deal with most of the time) Brad has to turn Nate over, pin him down and remind Nate (and himself) that Nate is his just as much as he is Nate's.

YES. THIS. There's nothing wrong with posession issues, you just have to recognize them so that you don't have a moment, zip strip somebody to the bed and then come back an hour later and have to apologize, because, "I know, I don't know what came over me. Yes, I totally trust you to go to the store/out with your friends/off to war. I was just having a moment. I'm sorry, will a blow job make it better. No? Okay, how about two."

I look forward to this tremendously when I get back.

I think they make more of their time together because it's so rare and fleeting. To go from being together all the time to not having that support for all those years has got to be one hell of a shock to the system. To not just be able to pick up the phone or run down the street and be all "Guess what stupid thing I did today" or even to have the choice of the physical proximity.

The night before Brad leaves for Pendleton, there's a big dinner with the Colberts and the Ficks (all the sisters included) and then Brad takes Nate for this long ride on his bike along the coast.

There's an attempt at sex near the beach, but the bike's just not stable enough for all of that, and they've been fucking like rabbits since prom so it's not so much required as almost like, well, we should at least try.

Around three in the morning they go back to Nate's house, climb the ladder up to his room and just lay there, curled up together on Nate's bed for hours, kissing and touching and just being together.

Brad doesn't want a big scene when he leaves in the morning for training, and Nate wouldn't be able to give him the send off he wants anyway with all those people around anyway.

A little after 6 a.m. they get up, but Nate's feet won't work. So he just stands there in the middle of his room, and his brain completely shuts down as Brad's pulling on his shoes.

Brad stands up and Nate has no idea what's on his face, but he's pretty sure if he opens his mouth he's going to ask Brad to stay. And he's pretty sure if he asks, Brad will, so he's just not going to say anything, but then Brad's cupping his face and kissing him and promising he'll be okay.

Nate leads the way down the hall, down his stairs, just knowing Brad's there behind him. They get to the front door and Nate disables the security alarm, but it takes him two tries because his eyes a little blurry right now.

And then he turns around and Brad's watching. Nate's pretty sure his heart is being broken all over again, so he just grabs a handful of Brad's shirt, pulls him into the sort of hug that would require the Jaws of Life for extraction.

There's a kiss on the ear, the cheek and one long, last lingering one and then Nate swallows down the razors in his throat and opens his front door. "Go on," he says, voice brittle, this close to breaking. "Go save the world."

Brad blinks at him, eyes bright.

Another hug. Brad kisses the top of his head.

He says something that Nate didn't even know he wanted to hear before Brad left, and then Brad's gone.

If Nate watches him walk away he may never leave the house again. So he closes the door and sits down the floor.

He looks up when his mother's painted toenails appear by his knees. "Sweetheart?" her voice is soft, concerned.

He looks up at her voice, can't quite see her for whatever's wrong with his eyes. "He left," Nate says quietly. "He's gone."

Nate presses his face against his mother's pyjama clad knee and lets her pet him. Lets her try to make him feel like she did when he skinned his knee and thought the whole world was ending.

He's not sure that this time it'll work.

He could be the newly-promoted detective, too smart/idealistic for his own good, and they pair him with Lydia because She Knows All and also, they wanna make sure the newbie doesn't get himself killed. (We'll just ignore what happened to her last partner.) Possibly he's the son of someone important and he has something to prove, so Lydia's the natural choice because she doesn't give a shit about that unless she can use it for the side of good and light.

Instead of "lower your standards". Heee.
