I think Ben has a certain kind of freedom with John that he's never had before. John respects him for who he is and what he can do. Ben's not used to that - he's used to having to take care of people or defend himself from people and he's not good at trusting, and yet he has to trust John. I also think that John's good at 'enjoy a good thing while it lasts'. He's not thinking Ben's going to change his mind or leave or anything, but he thought things would work out with Laura, and they didn't, so he's just gotten to the point where he's going to take life as it comes and roll with the punches. The fact that Ben keeps providing him with new and exciting punches to roll with is a bonus that John's definitely pleased about, because he hasn't had this much sex since the month after he got home from the war and he fucked just about everyone and everything he could find.
