Pain is just weakness leaving the body. (O rilly?)

So. Yesterday I ran and completed my very first marathon. Yes, marathon. M-A-R-A-T-H-O-N. The one with 26.2 miles. The one where you run over 40K. It was... it was pretty fucking amazing. Not gonna lie. Maybe not the hardest thing I've ever done, but probably one of, if not the most rewarding thing I've ever done. If you're thinking about doing this, I cannot encourage you highly enough.

BEFORE THE MARATHON BEFORE THE MARATHON
DURING THE MARATHON DURING THE MARATHON
AFTER THE MARATHON AFTER THE MARATHON
THINGS MY BODY CANNOT DO TODAY THINGS MY BODY CANNOT DO TODAY

It's important to me, now that the marathon is over, to thank a few key people:

* The United States Marine Corps. Ladies and gentlemen, if you are going to run a marathon... Let the Marines organize that shit. They are timely, they come prepared (hush, Brad) with food and Powerade and an awesome, scenic course, and the biggest smiles ever. And when you are about to jump on someone's back at mile 15 and demand they carry you, you will instead find yourself jumping in the air to high five Marines standing on pillars, and yelling back when they tell you how good you're doing. Also? HOTTEST BRANCH OF THE ARMED SERVICES YOU COULD EVER HOPE FOR. Hotass is good motivation. Or as Layla once said, "'rines, Daddy! 'Rines!"

* The Semper Fi Injured Marine Fund The charity I raised money for. If you're going to abuse yourself, do it for a good cause.

* I'd like to thank everybody on my flist who gave me music this year, because you've contributed to my endless hours in the pool and on the bike and on weights and running. I really couldn't have done it without you.

* To Porn Swat ([livejournal.com profile] alethialia, [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl, [livejournal.com profile] sparky77) for all kinds of support.

* To [livejournal.com profile] issaro and [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma for their unflagging support not just this year, but every year. For never telling me I was crazy (well, not to my face).

* To [livejournal.com profile] antheia, [livejournal.com profile] kattiya, [livejournal.com profile] lazlet, [livejournal.com profile] random_flores and [livejournal.com profile] shireeen for listening when I was injured and supporting me when I was questioning my sanity. For never telling me to just give the fuck up and go have a drink instead.

* And to [livejournal.com profile] maurheti, who single-handedly made this marathon possible with her network of connections and advice and her willingness to walk me through injuries and runs and nutrition and duct taped Ziploc bags and. For not once ever letting me think I couldn't get this done. For always believing in me even when things got super hairy. You did this, too, so thank you. (And Pnut). WE LOVE YOU PNUT.

And to a bunch of people who will never see this, but also made it possible: M and D and the other D and S and J and A and B and on and on.

Thank all of you so very much. I would raise a glass to you, but if I have beer or chocolate I'm probably going to vomit. And also, my body parts aren't working so let's just say I did.

I am so proud of you, sweetie! I wish I could have been there to cheer you on in person at least for a bit. (Even if I do think you're crazy, it's clearly a productive crazy, so who cares?) *mwah*

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if I do think you're crazy, it's clearly a productive crazy, so who cares?

That is the nicest thing you could've said to me! :D

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, you're my inspiration. My goal is to run a half-marathon next year, because I'm a wuss and am slowly making my way from 5k and on up.

Can I ask, were you happy with your time? Or were you just happy to finish? I'm always in the latter category, lol--WHO CARES ABOUT TIME, I'M STILL BREATHING! \o/

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd had some time aspirations when I started training, but one of the first things I also realized (and had to get drummed into my head) was if you do that to yourself you will be very sorry if you don't make it and that will ruin the experience for you. You can't predict what the weather is going to be like (head winds from hell! rain! Saharan heat), or what the road conditions will be (cracks, hills that would make Sisyphus cry), or how you're feeling that morning, or if somebody steps on your heel or any number of things. So, having made peace with that, yeah, I'm happy with my time. :D

And go team you with running your half-marathon. Having a goal makes all the difference.

I'm so proud of you! Congratulations.

Thank you (You'll see -- today it's 1.5 miles tomorrow it'll be 3!)

I am trying to rest. Chaffing can make that a little difficult though ;-)

Congratulations! I hate running with a passion, so I'm always impressed by people willing to suffer through it :P

I used to hate running too, and then one day I didn't. It happens.

[identity profile] lilylines.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's freaking amazing! Congratulations!!! I hope you have some time to rest your poor body now, though. ; )

[identity profile] romanticalgirl.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Saying I'm proud of you doesn't even begin to cover it. I'm so impressed that you worked so hard to even be able to *do* this, working through injuries and all the other stuff that's been going on. I'm awed that you did this awesome thing to raise money for such a great cause. You are an amazing person and so generous and giving and I'm so so so so so proud that you did this, and even more than that, I'm so proud to call you my friend.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The injuries. HAHAHAHAHAHA! Wooo. *wipes tears away* I'll tell you all about those sometime; let's just say of the last five months 2 and 1/2 have been spent unable to run (yeah, I got re-injured three weeks ago). I know, dude. Insanity. But honestly, thank *you* for your support, because it means more than I can ever say. *hugs*

[identity profile] gyzym.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a grade-A BAMF, and I am wicked impressed. Congrats!

love the images - so true!

Honestly I think that may be the most fun you can have while trying to kill your body. The Marines are fabulous; the route was *beautiful*; the other runners were awesome, the spectators brought food and tissues and everybody was just there to have a good time.

[identity profile] alethialia.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a SUPERHERO! I continue to be amazed by the awesomesauce things you do. And for such a good cause! Superhero, srsly.

Also, this made my morning:

Let the Marines organize that shit. They are timely, they come prepared (hush, Brad)

AHAHAHA! ILU, Z!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It was awesome, bb. And the scenery? Wow. And they were really well organized; of course they didn't have to get anything across the planet.

(I swear I saw Encino Man sitting down at one of the mile markers and the guy behind me on the return shuttle looked just like Poke).
