Brokedown sputtering

Love can mend your life, but love can break your heart
-The Police ‘Message in a Bottle’

Smallville
I Never

Lex has never sat on a rotting fence and watched the sun come up.

He’s been awake during sunrise, and he’s driven off into the sunset. He’s been in clubs and bars and walked out into the morning light. He’s been driving home or walking away. Lex has been awake for sixty-three hours straight and been kidnapped more times than he would like to count.

He has never watched the sunrise.

*

Lex has never had money troubles.

He has never had to wear hand-me-downs or keep sneakers because they only have a hole in one toe.

Lex has always been immaculately turned out no matter the occasion. He has always displayed his sartorial best. He’s never had to put things on layaway. Lex doesn’t even know what that is.

Lex has never had to be frugal with his money.

*

Lex has never mowed the lawn or fixed a broken appliance.

He has bought appliances just to take them apart and reuse the pieces.

Lex has never had to replace farmhands.

Lex has never had to worry about scholarships and next year's harvest.

Lex has never had to do a lot of things.

*

Lex has never trusted a man.

He has trusted his mother, and he has trusted Pamela.

He has never trusted his father. He has never trusted Dominic or Phalen or even Bruce.

He has tried very hard to trust Helen, but there are mitigating factors that prevent him from doing that. Even though she's not a man.

Lex trusts Mrs. Kent, and he very much wants to trust her son, but something keeps holding him back.

It might be that Clark doesn’t trust him.

*

Lex has never been in love.

Clark says that he shouldn’t say ‘never.’

Lex says Clark wouldn't understand.

Clark says he's wrong.

Dedicated to both my girls who continue to listen to me bitch and moan about my inability to write anything decent.

Oh, like the Lex POV/Clark shift.

Simplicity - and more.

::still trying to figure out how I decided to friend you::

Must be the writing. ;) *g*

*smooches* Lovely! Brief and light and dangerously smooth.

This is so way beyond decent, Luv. It's sweet and clean and heartfelt.
Lovely, Thanks for sharing.

I loved the tone and the rhythm and the truth of it. I'm quite sure Lex never has trusted a man. Wonderful job.

Lex trusts Mrs. Kent, and he very much wants to trust her son, but something keeps holding him back.

*sniffles* It's all very simple and very touching. A good glimpse into Lex. And Clark's right. Never say never.

Rana has never written an epic in a single paragraph.

Rana would very much like to, but she feels such tasks are best left to experts like you.

Rana has often been smug that she has excellent taste in creative friends.

Simplicty at it's finest. And Clark is right - Lex shouldn't say never and I know Clark is the one who can show Lex the error of his ways.

Beautiful, in all its simplicity and depth :)

Very poetic.

Ohhhhhh yeah. So deceptively smooth and simple, yet biting. How you manage to pack so much into so few words just amazes me. Utterly.

:-*

It is all so cute, ohmygod I can't deal. Well, not all I suppose, because it starts out kinda woeful, but in a good, where is this going way, and then gets cute, because they are precious little kittens, at least Clark is, and he's contagious, so. Kittens, yes. Bruised, battered, fucked up little kittens, but kittens nonetheless. Snuggly ones. :-*

Is charming. Good times.

Man, if that was you be unable to write something decent. Daaaaaymn. Let the gods themselves tremble in the face of "something decent"! =)

As with everything you write, there is a such a precise and exact feel to every moment that it's hard not to be there.

As always, outstanding!

This is such a wonderfully simple piece, but at the same time there's so much packed into it. Thank you for sharing.
