Less of a meme and more of a youyou

(gacked from [livejournal.com profile] obsessedmuch)

I know very little about some of the people on my friends' list. Some people I know relatively well. I read your fic, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...she likes spinach."

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal.

My personal goal is: to get over my writer's block, write my Obscure Santa thingy, and perhaps do something illegal this weekend.

I aim high.

Here's something that you wouldn't know about me, as it's not fannish or squee-worthy: I can. Jams and preserves. Peach and berry, mostly

Random, eh? ;)

Do you sell them? How does it work? Tell me about it, I know nothing about making preserves. Is it time consuming? Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't sell them, but I do give them as gifts.

I usually get the fruits from my grandmother's house (she has a number of bushes and trees), then you have to prepare the fruit (usually peeling, mashing, blending, etc.), boil it with sugar and pectin, and then can it in sterilized vacuum-top jars in a huge pot of boiling water.

Start to finish? If I'm doing something simple like bluuberry (which you don't have to peel or pit and mashes up easily by hand), I can do it from start to finish in just under three hours. Of course, an hour of that is mostly waiting for things to boil and such.

What's pectin? Yes, I really am always this inquisitive. I like learning.

Pectin is a binding agent...like, concentrated from fruit, etc. You can buy it in the grocery story.

Binding like... like a polymer or like duct tape? I like duct tape.

No! Like. Like. I don't know. It's a sugar that holds things together. So the jam gels properly and doesn't turn to soup. Ya know?

Duct tape is good.
