Music for Wednesdays

I've lost my ability to write. I've lost my porn, too. I can't even drum up a decent visual!

Ari has run off all of my muses, and I've lost my reading list to Supernatural and SG:A. I am most displeased –- but if you can't make yourself content no one can, so here's what I'm listening to right now:

Ben Lee 'We're All In This Together' -- Outside of his native Australia, Ben Lee's big claim to fame used to be that he was Claire Danes significant other. And then Claire dumped him and took up with Billy Crudup when he was expecting a child with Mary Louise Parker. I digress. Any song about standing in the kitchen on your rent controlled apartment cannot lose. Any song about the ties that bind us together that's cute really can't lose.

Billy MacKenzie 'Blue it Is' -- I don’t know how I came to possess this song, I can only assume that I gacked it from [livejournal.com profile] audiography like so many brilliant things that find their way to my ears. I was given this song many many moons ago by [livejournal.com profile] _ducks, and IMO, the best thing about this song is that the sheer beauty of it might bring tears to your eyes. It sounds like Jeff Buckley. It really sounds like Jeff Buckley -- but it's not, and it's so distinctive you know it's not, and I don't tend to say that about anybody. I've tried some of Billy's other stuff, and it doesn't sound so much like this song, but that's not really important. Just try it.

The Cinematic Orchestra f/ Ninja Tunes 'Kirwani -- I don't know how I appropriated this song but since I have two mp3s by Ninja Tunes I presume it's through the grace of the most beloved [livejournal.com profile] aurgasm. This is a instrumental piece that's not strictly classical and not strictly "world" –- but it's primal as hell. It's like someone's foot sliding up your leg under the dinner table, and then suddenly saying fuck it and tackling you to the ground and fucking on the floor of the restaurant. Not that I have ever done that. No.

Corinne Bailey Rae 'Enchantment' –- I'm sure some of you have heard Corinne's first single, 'Like a Star' which I believe is a Heatseeker in the UK, and it's a nice song. Love the video because it looks like, well, everyone's flat, but I chose this song instead, because it reminds me of Erykah Badu. It's sweet and soft and alluring, but without being cloying. At least that's how it sounds now, ask me again after another five listens. I'm still a bit on the fence.

John Lee Hooker 'One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer' –- You ever have those days when you just want to drink yourself shitless? Yeah, this is the song for those days. This might also be your song if you know all the bartenders at your local and they greet you by name, Norm.

Kenna 'Sunday After You' and – 'Man Fading' Anyone who has read Malcolm Gladwell's 'Blink' will know who Kenna is and know of Kenna's dilemma, which is that you can't categorize this artist in any way, shape, or form. He sounds like Damon Albarn, if Damon could sing on key. He sounds like the lovechild of Simon LeBon and Rollo from Faithless. He's electronica and new wave and R&B and really, he's just fucking fantastic. Try him; you won't be disappointed.

Pink Nasty 'Burn' – This is a cover of the Usher song. Wait. Don’t run off. Yes, I really did say that this is a cover of a song by Usher. And not only that, but Pink Nasty take an R&B song, break it down with an acoustic guitar, and it fucking works, too. Hell, depending on your musical tastes, you might give Usher a chance based on this cover alone! And of course, you could try Pink Nasty, too, because what a name for a performer.

Regina Spektor 'Reading Time with Pickle' -- I've recommended Regina before because her song 'Us' is just that brilliant. Some people might compare her to Fiona Apple, but Regina and Fiona are two completely separate entities, and the only thing they have in common is that they play the piano. This song starts out talking about going grocery shopping and winds up being about the truth about falling in love. Sometimes it makes you a little crazy.

Supergrass 'St Petersburg' -- I think most people know Supergrass for their song, 'Alright', which was featured in Clueless, and you know, that's a fabulous song, as are most of Supergrass' songs. The rub being that since they're not the hottest band around you don't tend to hear about them as much as say Elbow. Sometimes I forget about them, and then I'm reminded how great they can be. I listened to this song six times last night, because it really is that beautiful. If you've ever wanted to leave someplace so badly you were counting the days, you want this song.

I've lost my ability to write, too! It's hard to even scrape up dirty thoughts.

Maybe we can start a support group or something. :(

'St. Petersburg' sounds like it will be my song of the day. I have such a hate on for red tape that I might very well duct-tape my door shut and hang a sign that says "Gone Fishin'." hmph.

Also, Ben Lee is love.

[identity profile] copernica3.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
!! Ben Lee! I don't have that one yet! Seriously, about a month ago I hadn't a clue in hell who he is, but I think I've listened to these two tracks off Hey You, Yes You about fifty times in the last week. I'm buying that CD with my next paycheck, but now I have more in the meantime! *bounce* Thanks!

Ooooh... I can't wait to get home and download some of these!

And OMG yay, John Lee Hooker!

I took the Usher cover.

I assume you use itunes? I'm about to upload some mp4s.

Word, baby.

I've lost my ability to actually do *any* work, so thank you for these. Good music plus distractions are always appreciated. *g*

[identity profile] vylit.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
See, and to me that would be a sign. Maybe you should lose yourself in SGA and SPN. *smiles sweetly* Just sayin'...

[identity profile] rossywar.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, new music!! *claps hands* I'll have to wait until I'm at home to dowload these tracks, though. I have "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae, which is also very nice. Very spring-into-summer if you know what I mean: hazy sunshine, pavement cafes, Sunday mornings. A lovely piece of escapism on a cold, grey day.

Also, Supergrass are one of those bands who are consistently good. I can only have respect for them. They've been going for over 10 years now and they're still producing good music. Pumping On Your Stereo is one I would really recommend.

How I love thee, music that I can't find on the radio.

Thank-you for the shiny new distractions!

It's like someone's foot sliding up your leg under the dinner table, and then suddenly saying fuck it and tackling you to the ground and fucking on the floor of the restaurant.

See, now this makes me doubt the whole "I've lost my porn" thing, just a little. ;) Guh.

So, I just had to give you props for sharing the Kenna. Anytime I try to pimp him to folks, I get blank stares and I weep for people not willing to expand their horizons. I listened to his cd the entire summer between my freshmen and sophomore years of college. It got me to and from work. It helped me clean and do laundry. It helped me do homework for my summer class. It's been a while now, but I probably can still sing along with the whole cd. It is love.

I can't even drum up a decent visual! - This is perhaps the saddest thing I've ever heard.

Fyi - I love the way you talk about music. You could talk about an artist I loathe and end up convincing me to give them another try :) I'm taking all of these and I freaking love the Supergrass song.

thank you! *happy dance*

Yay! I love your music posts and this was the perfect pick me up after a horrid day at school.

[identity profile] avid-slacker.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I was skeptical, but I figured since your suggestions have been fantasic in the past I'd give the Usher cover a shot and your track record stands. It's really good.

I'm surprised the vocals are so similiar. I thought with the acoustic she would slow it down, but it still has alot of his, uh... delivery. Maybe I'm not saying this right. The point is, I like it.

[identity profile] teaspoon.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
i am always highly in favour of your music posts. took most, and look forward to trying them out. :)

I think I might have sent you the Billy Mackenzie song, aaages ago, in a "send me some music!" post. I tend to send Billy Mackenzie songs to anyone who seems to like Jeff Buckley. :)

RPF of the eighties: Billy was rumoured to have had an affair with Morrissey, prompting the Smiths song, "William, It Was Really Nothing" (http://foreverill.com/disc/william.htm). Billy later recorded a song (with The Associates) called "Stephen, You're Really Something" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004UB49/026-5268849-3471653).

I'm taking some of the others, because you always have good music, and I'm including a few more Billy Mackenzie songs, just in case you haven't heard these ones:

And This She Knows (http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0KPZXEZZYWH5P1ZE4VZEME30M1)
Beyond The Sun (http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=13P69XBUVQJXL14F7PSW9YG7T9)

Nabbed the Usher cover and the Corinne Bailey Rae (Her "Put Your Records On" is getting a LOTTA radio play here at the mo) and wanna say a big YAY for the Ben Lee love. Ah, Benny-boy - you're such a hippy, but we love ya anyway. :)

[identity profile] ranalore.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Your music posts are among the finer things in life. I just thought you should know.

Also, I have never heard Kenna before and now I love him like whoa. The same thing happened with Regina and "Us," which I play on a regular basis.

[identity profile] chickwriter.livejournal.com 2006-03-23 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, thanks for the music!

My crappy day was work related, but I empathize with the loss of the muse. May your contribution to our listening pleasure bring back the appropriate writing muses to you.

You have all the best stuff. Thanks for sharing the goods!

First: I took the zip, 'cos rock.

Second: The gallery name for the pics I posted for you? Very Bad Day.
