Heroes – The Love Song of Gabriel "Sylar" Gray (Sylar/Mohinder, R)

I know y'all are expecting some commentary on last night's episode 'The Hard Part', and there is a little bit

Didn't Nathan look especially hot last night? I mean really. I know everybody hated Mrs. P when she was all 'Buck up little camper' but dude, I have been where Nathan is, I know that sort of "I really don't want to fucking do this, but Mom is asking, what am I gonna do? Say no?" If you've never been there, then don't judge. Manipulation is a very complex thing, sometimes you gotta give to be able to come back around and get something else.

Also, those Claire/Peter people must've been pissing themselves. At one point even *I* was like, uh, did Nathan and Peter have a falling out and now Peter's trying to get with Claire to make Nathan jealous?

FYI: Claire's wardrobe was to die for, which we all know was down to Mrs. P. That coat for France nearly had me reaching through the telly. I was all, I'LL GO! I'LL GO! THAT UNGRATEFUL LITTLE SHIT DOESN'T EVEN APPRECIATE THE COAT!

but I figured you could get commentary or 38 of you could get a story. Personally, I'd vote for the story.

Sylar/Mohinder, Rated R
Spoilers through 1.21 'The Hard Part'

The Love Song of Gabriel "Sylar" Gray

Dr. Mohinder Suresh smiles too much. His teeth are too white, his manner too disarming. He is charming and exceedingly dense and from the moment he knocks on their –- Zane's -- door Sylar knows that the good doctor is special.

Mohinder is not special in the ways that Zane was, or that Gabriel was supposed to be, or even in the way that Sylar is. Mohinder is different on an ordinary level: he is human evolution -- not metahuman evolution.

Mohinder is unique only for what he is not. Sylar must keep him if only to have a basis for comparison. Everything in science is about comparison, about history, about knowing what came before so that you can analyze what will happen after.

Everything starts now.

*

Obviously the sex is part of Zane's -– Gabriel's –- Sylar's master plan. The fact that the plan has not even been formulated yet is of no consequence, because this is Sylar and Sylar can do anything. He can have anything. With Mohinder at his side –- babbling away about genetics and metahuman achievement -– Sylar can accomplish anything and everything.

He wonders what Mohinder thinks about brains. Not that Sylar eats them, but that he paints with them, sticks his fingers in and rearranges the chemistry so that he can learn and absorb and understand. Mohinder and Sylar are both men of science. They are both striving to achieve the same ends: creating and protecting a world they deem worthy of themselves.

Fucking Mohinder on cheap motel bedspreads is really just a matter of science and physics and practicality and a little chemistry –- or a lot of chemistry.

If the reaction of Gabriel's body is anything to go by, they have a lot of chemistry.

*

Sylar -– Gabriel -- has bite marks on his shoulder and tiny red scratches down his back that cross under his ribs. Mohinder left a very determined mark on the soft skin just behind his -- their -- right ear. As they pad around Mohinder's –- Chandra's –- apartment barefoot in the wee hours of the morning, Sylar listens to Mohinder's soft breathing all while thinking about science and abilities and how extraordinary someone so ordinary can be. When Mohinder wanders into the kitchen naked, Gabriel can feel the color in his cheeks.

Sylar just smirks.

Sometimes there is nothing ordinary or plain about Mohinder.

*

If Mohinder was into bondage, he could have just told him -- them; Sylar would have known exactly what to do with this sort of predilection. The duct tape and the IV drip are very unnecessary, but Sylar knows he shouldn't be surprised -- ordinary people always have problems adapting to change. Sylar will just have to help Mohinder along -- perhaps provide a little incentive.

Now that he can cast off the ill-fitting Zane, Sylar can give Mohinder the attention he's been craving all along. Yes, Sylar is very good at providing incentive; it helps that people who don't want to die can be very pliable.

*

It is not love. Sylar would never succumb to something so pedestrian and puerile. Love is just a concept by which people manage their means towards getting what they want. However, when he says, "I'm not done with you yet," he means it. Sylar is not done with Mohinder. Gabriel is not done with Mohinder either. Mohinder belongs to them now. Interlopers are not welcome.

*

Sylar only thinks about Mohinder on days ending in 'y'. This does not explain why he -– they -- know Mohinder's mobile phone number by heart. It's not as though Gabriel –- Sylar -- they -- have very many people they call in the first place. Most people are not worthy of their time or notice anyway.

Most people are flies and gnats, innocent only in their ignorance. Innocent only in that they will never be special.

Innocent and ordinary.

*

If they were honest they would admit that when they say they don't want to hurt 'ordinary people' they just mean Mohinder, but why would they be honest? Honesty has never gotten them anything except an almost-bullet to the head.

*

At night, Mohinder calls Sylar's name, and he knows this because both Gabriel and Sylar are very much attuned to Mohinder's whereabouts: when he's sleeping, when he's eating, when he's excited or tired or jerking off in the shower and trying to muffle the noise.

Sylar knows when Mohinder's voice is laced with panic or hatred or desperation, and underneath it all Sylar and Gabriel can hear the want. No matter what Mohinder says, no matter how he runs, he knows they belong together. In another time and another place, Mohinder might be crouched over a headless body and calling for Gabriel from two feet away. Sylar likes this idea. He knows that Mohinder is nowhere near as innocent and good as he claims. They would never be attracted to each other otherwise.

*

Sylar does not dream; he achieves and attains. Dreams are for people who have no ambition to get things done. When he sleeps, he does not endlessly replay a memory of Mohinder naked above him, white teeth flashing and dark hair plastered damply to his forehead. Sylar doesn't think about the heat of Mohinder's body next to him or under him or the feel of Mohinder's breath along the side of his neck. Sylar doesn't know what Mohinder's cock feels like in the palm of his hand or how tight Mohinder is when they're fucking. These are all dreams that Gabriel has –- Sylar just likes to take them out and study them on occasion. All scientists have to look at their data and study it -– how else do you learn?

*

Gabriel thinks his mother would have liked Mohinder; she would have had thousands of questions about India. Maybe he'll bring Mohinder a snow globe after he's brought the world to its -- his -- their knees. Sylar just laughs at this, because Mohinder has seen the world, what does he need fake snow and water for? If he wanted it though, Sylar could provide it.

If Mohinder wanted it, they could give him his own country full of snow; they've heard that the Alps are lovely in the spring. Besides, no one would dare to tell the President of the United States of America what he can't do or have or be.

No one has before, why would they start now?

And surely, if he were to become president, that would be special enough to silence his mother's voice in his head.

Surely if Sylar can take over the entire free world, he can win Mohinder Suresh's heart -- and if he can't have figuratively, maybe it will be time to take it literally.

Eeeek!

: flails

This was brilliant and showcases the dual-personalities and manupulativeness and total WTF-ness of Sylar's brain. And why he thinks his boyfriend is pretty but naive. And I love the last paragraph and the snow and the way his fractured mind is working and why and how he's thinking about Mohinder.

So I was listening to my ipod mix this morning, and realised that The Divinyls' Pleasure & Pain works as a pretty good Sylar/Mohinder song, so I uploaded it here (http://download.yousendit.com/24B270161DBCD835).

And on the Nathan front, I've seen wibbling this morning from people who think he's completely in the bag with whatever his mother and Team Linderman are planning but I'm just not sure. Perhaps he's now planning his fly-peter-to-safety scheme or something even more clever in mind....

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Nathan passionately. Sometimes I even find myself rather fond of Peter too, and we all know I think Mama Petrelli is the awesomest mom ever, but sometimes a girl just needs to get her inner psycho on. Writing Sylar is excellent for helping me cleanse my palette. He's like sorbet! Also, thank you for the song! I have yet to stop listening to the Frente song you sent me as well, so thanks for that as well.

As for Nathan being in the bag for the future-president scheme. I think he's conflicted as we can well see. Nathan is ambitious. There are definite things he wants -- but he's a little bit more 'moral' than Mrs. P or Linderman -- I blame the military and the DA's office frankly -- and that cannot be counted out ever.

I try to do my comments in order, but then I had this flash of Sylar coming home with a blood-smeared globe and brain fragments on his coat, and saying, "Honey, I brought you something," and Mohinder looks up from where he's chained to the radiator and is like, "You thought of me, how sweet, you fucking nut-job."

"What did I tell you about calling me names?" Sylar says, setting the globe just inside the chalk circle that stretches the radius of Mohinder's reach.

"I save endearments for people who don't chain me to their furniture."

"Yes, but the silver looks lovely against your skin."

*cue much chain rattling*

Nothing like having an obsessive psycho killer as a wannabe bf.

Oh Sylar. Oh Gabriel. Oh Mohinder.

I love this like Sylar loves power.

So, after last night's episode I had a serious moment of almost changing my vote, because I was so damn gleeful about Sylar (and Gabriel) freaking out and calling up Mohinder for help. I didn't, as there was not nearly enough Nathan/Peter in that ep, so I think I'm sort of in withdrawal, but I really did consider it. Seeing this up completely made my day.

I love the almost-logics and certainties of Sylar's thoughts, and the way he is and isn't still Gabriel. I love his valuation of Mohinder, both the attraction and the justification. I love his determination at the end, and how it fits perfectly between this week's breakdown and last week's AU reveal.

What you've done with Sylar here is truly brilliant.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, after Monday night -- I mean let's just point out that he called his boyfriend when he thought he was gonna do a bad thing. No, not the bad things he's been doing all along -- he doesn't want forgiveness for that -- but because he obviously doesn't want anything to happen to his man. When I saw that my jaw hit the floor -- I was just like, you. called. Mohinder?!

He's totally whipped.

I was going to leave a comment earlier about how The Man is always duly noting discarding my suggestions and how therefore you are The Man but LOOK. You wrote it and my week is complete so now I'm glad I didn't because you don't bite the hand that feeds you Sylar. That way lies madness.

I love the dual personalities you have here and how it reads like Sylar just excuses his softer feelings for Mohinder with this other personality he's created, just like he created Zane. The way it's set up, it could actually be two personalities and Sylar just not letting himself have weaknesses. I always love your writing for the way it actually connects with the characters instead of feeling like I'm reading someone else's interpretation of the characters. You know I loved this before I even opened the link, but OMG this exceeded my expectations. You are awesomecakes for writing this even though I'm pretty sure that Petrelli-Oval-Office porn won the poll by a landslide.

Also, I always approve of naked Mohinder. AHEM. Stupid but pretty!

if he can't have figuratively, maybe it will be time to take it literally.
That is so brilliantly insane that it works completely. Love it, such a freaky touch.

The multiple personalities jumble is so well-written here. This whole fic has so many things that I love about this pairing. The mention of the moral gray (ha! Gray!) in Mohinder, mobile phone number (though this might be thanks to Charlie the Texas waitress' skill), the need to be special. And this, oh, this:

when they say they don't want to hurt 'ordinary people' they just mean Mohinder, but why would they be honest?

Eee.

And yes, he so wants to rule the world with his Indian geneticist boyfriend. Which is both freaky & awesome.

I confess, I like writing Sylar. He's so off the wall from all my other characters that he's like a palette-cleanser.

Oh man, I love your Sylar voice. It works so perfectly!

Haha, I totally did not realize until now that Sylar dialed Mohinder's number from memory. Woooowwwww

Sylar loves his stupid hotass boyfriend. Sad but true.

Okay, I am having a crappy ass day and this is cheering me up immensely:

Mohinder is unique only for what he is not. Sylar must keep him if only to have a basis for comparison
Aw! Sylar is rationalizing his love!

He wonders what Mohinder thinks about brains. Not that Sylar eats them, but that he paints with them, sticks his fingers in and rearranges the chemistry so that he can learn and absorb and understand. Mohinder and Sylar are both men of science. They are both striving to achieve the same ends: creating and protecting a world they deem worth of themselves.

This may be the most brilliantly wrong sentence I have ever read. And I just love how Sylar thinks.

Love is just a concept by which people manage their means towards getting what they want. However, when he says, "I'm not done with you yet," he means it. Sylar is not done with Mohinder. Gabriel is not done with Mohinder either. Mohinder belongs to them now. Interlopers are not welcome.

Just, dude! I love your Sylar so much! And I could totally quote the rest of this back at you because it's all brilliant and I love how Sylar keeps on rationalizing and the way he describes Mohinder.

This made me so happy and also kind of want to live in a world ruled by Sylar with Mohinder as his consort or Grand Vizier.

And as far as Nathan goes... yeah, I've got nothing. This was really the episode of me just wanting to give him a big hug.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Crappy days = suxxors! I'm glad I could make yours brighter if only for a moment. Also, dude, Sylar is totally in sparkly heart love with Mohinder. He called him because he thought he was gonna do a bad thing -- not the fifteen thousand other bad things, but something that might affect Mohinder. That's luuuuuurve. Also, I like writing Sylar, baby. Really. He's an excellent brain cleanser (heh) for real.

Also? Nathan hugs!

Holy crap, woman, when you write, you fucking write. Now I'm really happy I voted for this fic, though it was so difficult to choose!

This is the bit that killed me:

If they were honest they would admit that when they say they don't want to hurt 'ordinary people' they just mean Mohinder, but why would they be honest? Honesty has never gotten them anything except an almost-bullet to the head.

That tiny little section totally did me in. GAH.

Also (unrelated to fic) last night for the first time, I understood the Claire/Peter shippers. I laughed when I saw your mention of it here. Heh.

I am trying not to judge Mama Petrelli, but it is very very difficult right now.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There's something about writing Sylar, sweetie, I dunno what, but he's just -- it's healthy in a weird way. He's a total brain-cleanser (heh) from everything else.

That was totally what I saw on the show on Monday night. It's not the bad thing that bothers Gabriel -- he's done hundreds of bad things -- but that Mohinder might get hurt in his bad thing.

Do not judge the Mama P! I will be vindicated with her like I was vindicated when everybody had their Nathan!hate -- it hurts just to type that.

[identity profile] serialkarma.livejournal.com 2007-05-08 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sylar is so psychotically creepy! Yay!

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I want your brains! Maybe he was a zombie in another life? Also, I had to throw in the president bits just for you.

[identity profile] tju-tju-tju-tju.livejournal.com 2007-05-08 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That was brilliant. Positively brilliant. You've captured the confusion of Sylar's personality so perfectly, the Mohinder/Sylar relationship from Sylar's perspective was spot-on, and this was very sexy, in a creepy way. The writing was excellent. Your transitions flowed easily and well. I'd go on, but I'm feeling slightly incoherent now. Outstanding job.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)

You captured Sylar's confusion and the weird sick/creepy/sweet affection he has for Mohinder. I love the progression and pace of the fic, and how well it was done. Fantastic job. One of the best Sylar/Mohinder fics I think I've ever read.

Surely if Sylar can take over the entire free world, he can win Mohinder Suresh's heart -- and if he can't have figuratively, maybe it will be time to take it literally.

Whether one considers Sylar's affection part of the canon or not, no can disagree that this is a very fleshy statement of Sylar's character and pathos as we come to know it.

I have to admit, I've resisted the Sylar ship fics, since for the most part, he was written with a single-mindedness meant only to earn your hatred and disomfort. Anything else that showed up in fic seemed too out of character and difficult to weave into a plot involving a pairing. But after last night, his character has a little more room to move around.

The writing was very well done on this. Very believable, which is the selling point when playing with Sylar.

[identity profile] hackthis.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so very pleased that you found this believable and well done, thank you for that. I understand a lot of your qualms when dealing with Sylar. This is the second story I've written with him, which is two more than I ever thought I would do. I tend to think of him as a multiple personality inhabiting one body more than anything else, and there's something about him that just cleanses away the rest of the debris, of course I always tend to gravitate towards the ones who are morally askew, so what can I say? :)

Ah, excellent. Just the kind of sweet-in-a-totally-fucked-up-way thoughts Sylar et al would have about Mohinder. I mean, once he called him, you knew. It was like last week, when Hiro became super-angry-man once Ando died. You just KNOW. YOu had suspicions before, but now it's for sure, the writers are practically yelling it from rooftops. That's why I like this show. I don't love it, it's not The Wire, it's not Deadwood, it's not even Friday Night Lights, but it is also definitely not afraid to embrace the slash. It's just goddamn THERE.

And this, this is how it goes. Well done.
