It's clear to me that regardless of whatever else happens with anybody else in their lives, they make each other human. There is a connection of respect and trust that they don't get anywhere else. That to me is the best of all possible worlds. Wait, forget the Voltaire. I save Voltaire for when I'm being sarcastic after having a bad day and this shit was fucking awesome.

And I love any scene with Don and Joan together, because it's sometimes really good to see that he respects her professionalism. That for all Don fails at personal relationships, he does have this ability, this willingness to have respect for the women he knows, to admire and appreciate their strengths and to want them to be strong. He appreciates the lines that Joan draws, rather than disregarding them.
I mean, he fails in his relationships with women (and often drastically so) because he is deeply fucked up, but it's something that makes me still care about him, to want to see him in the same room as these awesome women, and not just for him, but for them too.
