Friday Recs (The Six Ways to Blackpool Edition)
Week Two of Diversified Recs. 22 recs in Inception, The Social Network and (of course) Sherlock (BBC 2010) for art, fic, primers and vids. Plus some bonus shiz cause that's how I roll.
Recs for All
Jon Stewart Crossing the Dailyware River -- Jon and Stephen make crossing the Delaware look good. And the artists made sure to put in all the TDS correspondents. Wyatt! Asif! Lewis fucking Black! But why is there no Larry Wilmore? Fail! :P
Inception
Currency by
the_ragnarok --
foxxcub is hosting an Inception Kissing fest. If you are not over there, why not? This story is one of the multitude of awesome contained therein and I just found it so utterly charming all I could do is smile.
Frog Prince by
johanirae -- Eames turns into a frog. A paisley frog! And only Arthur can make him better. ♥
Teenage Arthur & Eames by
jibrailis -- Kissing Meme Entry written by the most beloved
jibrailis. There's a county fair. Arthur is the boy next door and Eames is manning the kissing both. And there are video games, cause that'a how she rolls.
Write your name on the dotted line by
jibrailis -- I am huge
jibrailis fan. Did y'all know that? I feel like I haven't said that in like two whole days. This story is just another example of why I'm in awe of her talent. Fandom is stuffed to the rafters with stories of kids in love and teenagers in love and college students in love and 20 and 30-somethings in love as though people stop being interested in sex or love or companionship the minute they hit 40, which, as far as I know, is totally untrue. So here is to
jibrailis because not only does she show that the world doesn't stop at 40, but it might just start up in a whole new way. Five heads in the refrigerator for sure.*
*Thanks to Sherlock I sometimes rate things by the number of heads in the fridge. Don't even look at me like that. Benedict Cumberbatch could store an entire corpse in my house if wanted to. In theory. As long as I got to see him naked.
Sherlock (BBC 2010)
Art from the Taxi Scene in 'A Study in Pink' by
sadynax -- I love this so much, I want to hug it and pet it and squeeze it and call it George. Seriously if you don't adore this too, you are dead inside. Also, I swear I had a real thought but the second drawing down is Sherlock holding a wee baby!John and I just went .... !!!!!
Caitlin Moran in The Times 5/8/10 typed up by
wastedtiara -- Normally I like getting into fandoms on the ground floor; I'm that kind of person, but one of the things I am loving about coming into Sherlock a little later is that I can trace back stuff to its origins. A few weeks ago someone (
ravurian?) mentioned The Times saying Benedict has a voice like a 'jaguar hiding in a cello' and now I know who to thank for that. Because really. Everything Caitlin Moran says here is on the money.
It Gets Better (Sherlock BBC 2010) by
moony -- For those who don't know, the It Gets Better Project was created by Dan Savage in an effort to offer support to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender kids and teenagers to let them know, that whatever you're going through right now, it gets better. It's taken hold pretty much everywhere, especially in light of the spate of teen suicides in the States & Canada, but whatever its original inspiration it's become an excellent tool to talk about bullying and the long-range effects that are felt years later. So this is a story
moony wrote about that from Sherlock's perspective. And I just wanted to say that whatever your orientation, whatever your religion, whatever your current gender or the one you want to be, whatever your economic status or your emotional state right now. Whatever is wrong: IT GETS BETTER. SO HANG IN THERE.
p.s. The Trevor Project is there if you, or someone you know, might need someone to talk to.
John in Stripes by pavelchekov -- So, The Blind Banker kind of blew on a lot of levels -- and yet, it was still better than 90% of American television. What I managed to take away from this was that vertical stripes should not be banned for the entire planet: Martin Freeman gets special dispensation. Everybody else needs that shit burned.
Let You Kiss Me (So Sweet and So Soft) by
out_there -- First of all, any time someone references Regina Spektor they get a smile from me, and then when the story is so well crafted and enjoyable that's just like a whole new level of GO TEAM YOU. This is a story about first kisses, specifically John and Sherlock's first kisses and I totally draw sparkly hearts around it, no lie.
Sherlock and The Princess Bride by lindseycathryn -- When I watched A Study in Pink there was this moment at the end between Sherlock and the cabbie where I thought, this looks a lot like Vizzini and Westley and then I put the lager down. But I wasn't the only one.
Sherlock's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by
irisbleufic --
moony held a Sherlock Kissing Meme, which really? Great plan all round and this story is from that. I just... oh Sherlock. How so bitchy yet still so adorable?
show me what I'm looking for by
ptelefolone -- There are many things I will eventually get tired of in this lifetime, Jealous!Sherlock is not one of them
Wherein There Is a Case, Several Mysteries, John Coming to the Rescue, and an Old Folk Saying by
parsnips -- One of the things that I'm finding in Sherlock fic is that they will write the shit out of really plotty "dude, this is totally a case" fic. I expect to see this in the second series, the one where it's John who's doing the solving and OMG, he's such a BAMF! ♥ Also? Sherlock has a sekrit. Best sekrit ever. *\o/*
CHARITY AUCTION ALERT: His Most Holy Hotness, Benedict Cumberbatch himself, did a canvas of Sherlock to raise money for the Willow Foundation, which helps people with serious illnesses. This art? I can only assume that his talent just distills down to the fandom and that's why all the artists are so fucking talented. I mean, damn, this is well done. The auction goes lives on 26 November which is the day before my birthday. I'm just saying. No, I'm not seriously shilling Jaysis calm down.
The Social Network
A Social Network Primer by
soxdamnxcute -- I really and truly wish more people were into The Social Network. I heard some people had issues with sexism in the film and that this was blamed on Aaron Sorkin. I'm not a Sorkin fan; I don't know what he's done in the past, but I can tell you that this movie is based on the book by Ben Mezrich (The Accidental Billionaires) and that I can assure you, the sexism is from the base material in this case. Also, that writer is an ass. BUT. I like this movie, a lot. So I'm really happy
soxdamnxcute made this primer. And I'm really really happy that it introduced me to the idea of Jesse/Andrew. Because based on their interviews? Uh, so doing something.
world enough and time by
fledmusic -- I love The Time Traveler's Wife, so I am partial to people adapting it for fandom. Correction, I am partial to people adapting it well. And this is so very well done. Mark is Henry and Eduardo is Clare. You think being a Time Traveler's tough? Trying doing that and running Facebook.

It is true, Benedict Cumberbatch is wreathed in sun and glory. If we were in a Greek myth, the sun chariot wouldn't have crashed because of some stupid boy. It would have crashed because the gods were all too busy looking at his face.
And Adele, omg. I am always looking for new music to listen to because I am woefully uneducated in good music, so thank you!
no subject
OH MY GOD. THIS! THIS! *jumps up and down* I love Phaeton! I love Greek mythology, how did you know? *vibrates with squee*
I am exceedingly picky about my music, but Adele is utterly fabulous. Her voice is stellar. Enjoy the album :)
Also, you are awesome and totally deserve the praise. Yis.

I'm not going to admit the number of times I listened to that song on repeat while writing it (my writing mix for Sherlock/John is probably not what either Sherlock or John would listen to), but I am going to take a bow for the team.
*bows*
Also, I'm so thrilled that not only can I find good Eames/Arthur fics through your recs, but now utterly lovely John/Sherlock fics too. You're a multifandom gem.

I like jealous Sherlock too.
John fumbles for his keys in the dim and muted night, the street lights eerily recalling gas lamps of times past. John shivers as the ghost of a past life flits at the edges of his vision.
Thankfully the lamp is on inside and bathes the room in buttery soft light. John kicks off his shoes and shrugs out of his coat; pouring himself a snifter of brandy he sinks gratefully into Sherlock's favourite armchair. Swirling the brandy around his tongue in appreciation he muses on the benefits of moving to his bed to sleep or risking Sherlock's wrath and sleeping right where he was.
He will not acknowledge the comfort that the scent of Sherlock; clinging to the fabric of the armchair; brings him.
"My chair. My brandy."
John is startled and chokes on the swallow of brandy. His eyes are unfocused as he gazes at Sherlock in a ridiculously elegant black night coat and adorably sleep tumbled curls.
"I assume she has finally given you leave to come home?"
John is still bemused. He can't remember the last time that Sherlock asked him a rhetorical question. He is a man of statements.
"I owe her Sherlock. And yes I have a few hours off plus I like her."
John gets to his feet. He always forgets how tall Sherlock is. It has never intruded on him because Sherlock is stillness in motion so that his presence never invaded John's world.
But.
There was something different and John can't place his finger on it. And he can't think with those piercing blue eyes making him their focus. John wants to say something pithy and move to his room, anything really before he does something really stupid. Stupid like tugging those rampant curls and biting Sherlock's lips. Like he said stupid.
"You did not call me. Its been 28 hours."
John knows not to be flattered. Its just Sherlock.
John knows its futile but he says "You could have called if you needed something."
"Needed something?" Sherlock's voice is slow and ponderous. John ignores the frisson of awareness creeping down his spine. It seems to be a permanent state these days.
John is startled; another permanent state it seems; as Sherlock clasps his chin in long cool fingers tilting to capture the light better.
"Two days since you slept and the Brandy is the first nourishment you've had in the last day."
John smiles crooking his mouth to one corner. "Congratulations?"
Was that pithy he wonders? He does not notice Sherlock's fascination with his mouth.
Sherlock steps closer.
"Your hair is clean. So you've had a shower".
"Obvious." John murmurs as he tries to look anywhere but at Sherlock and as usual fails.
"You seem stiff John."
John is mortified, already?
Sherlock is clinical, oblivious. Sherlock presses a finger in the dip above John's collarbone.
"Your heart rate is accelerated, heightened colour and..."
John's heart stops when Sherlock licks his jawline.
"your hydration levels are too low."
John does not breathe. If he acknowledges it, it, this, might disappear or tumble his carefully preserved sense of order off the precipice.
Sherlock is standing there still holding him. His face unreadable as always. But there is a kindling in his eyes and all John can see is blue intensity.
Re: I like jealous Sherlock too.
Maybe its the exhaustion. Maybe its the brandy. Mostly its Sherlock.
Sherlock's lips taste exactly as he imagines, like a firm unripe peach and black tea. The curls are gloriously soft under his fingers. And John smiles against Sherlock's lips at the incongruity of those feminine curls.
"Something funny?" Sherlock's eyes are no longer kindling, they are burning.
This time Sherlock kisses him. Its hard and frantic and Sherlock kisses nothing like his detective work. There is no rhythm and reason just solid dark consuming need.
John pulls at Sherlock's night coat and the silk slips off pale shoulders. John is clawing Sherlock's back and pressing against him, needy like a man seeking benediction. Sherlock twists John around holding him against his chest. His hands slip into John's regulation slacks without preamble.
John keens against Sherlock's neck at the contact. Sherlock moves his hands and John clutches his hips in desperation looking for a hold in world that was tilting something crazy. Sherlock flexes his wrist and John sees stars. Sherlock captures his scream as he floats back to Earth.
Sherlock is holding his full weight and John can hear the loudness of their breath.
"Sherlock..."
"John. Come to bed."
And he's gone back to his room like he had not just disintegrated John's life.
John pauses for one moment only teased by a memory of another time and then he follows Sherlock.

I've only gotten into the Sherlock fandom recently (I can tell you when, exactly, but let's not) and all the Sherlock fics I've read are your recs. They've all been amazing. One in particular was mindblowing, and it's from an authour you've already recced, out_there.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/133861?view_adult=true
32,900 words and every minute spent reading it was entirely worth it, even though I have 15 essays and papers to either fix or write. So far, the best Sherlock fic I've read. So thank you. You probably don't see it as a big deal, but really, if it weren't for you, I would have never discovered out_there. Well, I would, just not so quickly. As a token of my appreciation:

So I loved the recs you did for Inception, and I'm loving that you're being Sherlock into the mix. You always seem to find the best fics and art. It makes for a good shortcut in the fandoms.
Since you seem to love fanvids as well, I just wanted to point you towards a Sherlock one that is quite gorgeous and dark.

in addition, thank you so much for posting sherlock recs. I was wondering if you had any more bookmarked? It's doesn't even have to be epic Sherlock/Watson love. It's fantastic that the BBC series actually leaves a window open for this possibility (it's lovely to see a "taboo" relationship normalized, like, why wouldn't attraction between two men be discussed without making it scandalous or a very special episode? But, I digress. Meant to say, I'd love Sherlock & Watson friendship fic too. I'd really appreciate any recommendations. Some funs things to check out:

Please stop making me into a skeevy old lady. Fucking hell. Ahem.
First of all, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE LINKS THEY ARE TOTALLY MAKING MY DAY. And yes, it had to be in all caps, cause Jesse Eisenberg with stubble, what? Um, so I think that answers your question, who was my favorite SN actor: Jesse Eisenberg, he wasn't even on my radar before that. Then again Andrew Garfield is such a chameleon that I didn't realize I'd seen him in so many things. My least favorite "actor" (if that's what you can call what he did acting) was Justin Timberlake though.
Alas I do not have any more Sherlock stories bookmarked at the moment. I tend to post everything I have in Friday recs and don't keep thing otherwise. Friday recs are really my way of keeping track of things I like.
As for the way Moffat and Gatiss handled Sherlock and John's discussion about sexuality I think it was handled beautifully, because it was honest and as you said "not as a special episode" but that's the way most of the planet deals with such things. It's really only American TV that feels these things require so much melodrama and then see nothing wrong with covering everything with bloodshed and gore as though *that* is typical. Not a fan.
welcome! so glad you like the links!!
No worries. He absolutely does not look it, but JE is 28. No skeeving necessary. Thank goodness because, seriously, so hot (http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lbdwrsjK8n1qayr1io1_500.png). :D Also, is it just me, or does he look like a really good kisser (see: Adventureland & Holy Rollers)?
Andrew Garfield is such a chameleon
Have you seen him in Boy A (http://www.megavideo.com/?v=WFSIOQ58)? Such an interesting, complex story & AG is incredible in it. Sexy, vulnerable, lost... I still haven't seen Never Let Me Go; I'll hafta catch it on video.
My least favorite "actor"... was Justin Timberlake
THAT'S interesting, especially considering that critics seem to be praising him. It may not be credible in the long run, but I've heard Best Supporting Actor rumors are being batted around. Please, expand on your opinion. I didn't hate his performance; he was adequate, but replaceable. Another actor could have jumped in & done just as well, if not better. JE & AG? So clearly necessary. They managed to elevate Sorkin's script.
It's really only American TV that feels these things require so much melodrama and then see nothing wrong with covering everything with bloodshed and gore
Trufax. most recent example in film: Saw 3D, woman bisected by buzzsaw. Blue Valentine, woman has orgasm due to oral sex. Guess which movie the US censor will allow teens to see?
Finally, some cool SN-related quotes. thought they may interest you:
Re: welcome! so glad you like the links!!
And yes, I have seen Andrew in Boy A. I actually saw Boy A years ago and had no idea that that was the same actor who was in The Social Network. Astonished to be honest.
As for Justin Timberlake. He is not an actor; he is a singer who wants to play at being an actor because he believes it will give him credibility (see also most models, Rhianna, Beyonce, 50 Cent it goes on and on). He has no natural affinity for acting. You could have replaced him with Joe Average and Joe probably would've done a better job and been more convincing. As for the critics, I honestly don't give two farthings what they say. If I listened to them I'd think Scarlett Johansen could act and Woody Allen was anything besides sketchy. I don't read reviews and hold no truck in anyone else's opinion besides my own (and a few others).
