LURKER AMNESTY DAY!

I'm copying this word-for-word from the most awesome [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore and declaring today Lurker Amnesty Day! Read but never comment? Surf by occasionally? Here for the fic? Say hello! You are under no obligation to ever comment or delurk again, but here's a chance to do so in a post just for that.

And, you know, if you aren't a lurker but want to say hello and amuse me, that would also make me happy! Amusement is always welcome.

ETA: If you are looking for something awesome in your life, why not try watching The Unusuals. ABC, 10pm, tonight (Wednesday). I offer Exhibits #1 and #2 for your consideration.

ETA#2: As I told [livejournal.com profile] sockich: I am so impressed by how many of you guys are all GENERATION KILL, YEAH! and SOUTHLAND, HOORAY! Seriously it's totally making my day.

Southland for the Motherfucking WIN *\o/*

So. Southland. Best network show this year or best network show this year? Seriously, it's very hard to watch this show at the same time I'm supposed to be decompressing for bed because then I get all excited by Cooper just BREATHING.

I've been on line for about 20 minutes and am currently involved in two conversations and a txt message babble about last night's episode.

Spoilers and Shrieking re: Last Night's Southland )

I am very sorry to hear that NBC is doing an NBC(or a FOX, depending) and just yanking Kings from the schedule. Supposedly until June. Yeah, whatever. Fail Ben Silverman, but then again, that's all you do anyway.

ETA: CRAP! My bad about the cut tag SNAFU, folks! Hey, does anybody have a copy of The Frames 'For the Birds' CD they'd like to share with me?

I am all about a good cause.

Every year around this time (when the tax rebates come in), I tend to put together a charities post, in hopes that maybe if somebody has a few dollars lying about that they haven't spent on beer that they might consider donating to some of my favorites (Planned Parenthood, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS, Susan Komen Breast Cancer, Habitat for Humanity are just a few). This year, though, I know times are tough financially for a lot of people, so instead of shilling for all the big charities, I'm going to ask you to consider donating to just one person.

Sharron Pearson is a high school student at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles and she has been accepted to attend the Oxford Tradition to study drama and *creative writing*. Yes, that Oxford. Yes, that one in England. Yes, to do WRITING.

Her scholarship covers room and board and food, but it doesn't include airfare and miscellaneous. And so her school is accepting donations on her behalf, because her family can't afford to send her. They're hoping to raise $2,500, and I'm not looking at anybody to donate the whole or even 10%, but if you could donate 1% ($25) or even 0.5% ($12.50), every little bit helps.

If you've ever travelled away from home, or wanted to, if you've ever thought about what it would be like to be given an opportunity to improve your life for the better, I hope you'll consider donating. I've seen what fandom can do when it's inspired, I hope you'll feel a little inspired.

Inquiries on how to donate can be sent to Crenshaw High School Assistant Principal Paul Scibetta at: pscibett@lausd.net ETA: They've reached their desired $2,500, but are still accepting donations, which can be sent to:

For what it's worth

Whether or not you're familiar with David Simon's The Wire*, this is still an absolutely beautiful article about interracial relationships and people in general and god knows it's nice to read something positive for a change, instead of about how much people suck. Because, y'all, sometimes people fucking suck... and sometimes they don't.

*FYI: If you have not seen The Wire you are missing out of some of the most well-written, compelling television ever created. It's not pretty or light, so if that's what you're after, don't bother. But if you want something that makes you think, something so real your teeth ache? Watch this series. And then go see Generation Kill. Not pretty or fluffy, but so very true.

A thought.

I've been pondering the Dreamwidth phenomena on my flist and I've found myself thinking about it far more than I should think about anything that's not related to John Cooper )

Yes, I might've actually thought this this morning and possibly done a little dance. It's also possible I was dancing to the Notorious B.I.G.'s 'Warning'* but still. I think Cooper likes bad country music, heavy metal and rap. He's contrary like that.

Who does a girl have to blow to get some Cooper icons? Or some Regina King icons? (No, I don't remember her character, she's fucking Regina King!) I went looking and all the Southland icons are Ben Ryan Ben... whatever cakes. I had Ryan icons a long time ago, I don't need those.

Oh! And somebody made [livejournal.com profile] southland_fic. Go! Join! Write me all kinds of Bad Ass!Cooper fic. Please? I am not above begging. You have no idea

Fannish news alerts!

So, who else watched The Unusuals besides [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma and myself? And which one of you is actually writing for it, because no way would a show without a fandom person writing for it have a Kowalski, a Walsh and a Snape in one episode. It also has McManus and Augustus from Oz. I'm just saying. Check it out.

Also, um, is it just me or is Walsh hot in that scruffy Ryan Atwoodish, but like, more manly way? I would hit THAT. Yes. I wouldn't let him cook though.

Speaking of Mr. OC, everybody's going to watch Southland tonight, right? Not only is Ryan Atwood on there, but so is Bull from Band of Brothers and everybody loves Bull. ilu Bull!

Oh, and the other network show that I'm watching, but not really is Castle, because it has Poke from GK. I don't pay much attention except to see him in a suit and tie, with hair. The hair, people! I wants to touch it!

Yes, I am shallow in this manner.

Oh, and in case anybody didn't hear, NBC has moved Kings to Saturday. At 10pm. Yeah, I know.

ETA: Three other people on my flist who love Doves, the new LP Kingdom of Rust is THE BOMB! Finally, an album worth waiting four years for. (If you know not who the Doves are, but have faith in my music taste, at least give the first single a swing. Most people aren't consistently good throughout their careers, Doves are. Yay for JimiJeznAndy!)

Spies wot?!

I have not really written anything of length in a while and I'd been pondering some form of Merlin fic or Merlin porn, which I have apparently never written, which is a bit shocking. No gratuitous wet!Arthur porn at all? Huh. -- but I digress. I want Generation Kill fandom to have a Minor Characters Ficathon so I can write more Poke and Walt (who no one has ever written. Really, people? Scandal!) and while discussing Walt's Superior Recon Skills with [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 the following concept seemed to transpire which I then relayed to [livejournal.com profile] lazlet thusly:

Oh, and to keep you very much amused Sparky and I are trying very hard to promote this GK minor character ficathon just so we can actually get some Poke, Rudy and Walt fic in the world, and somehow conjecture about Walt fic has turned into Spy!Ray with Walt as his Q.

As Sparky pointed out, Ray would be the last person you'd think of as a spy, because I mean Ray? REALLY?

Sparky decided that Ray has a thing for hats. I said he likes to wear a fedora and tee shirt to the spy labs -- yes, I said spy labs, dammit -- so he can bother Walt and flirt with him. I reckon also that Ray wears long sleeve shirts a lot due to the proliferation of tats, so him in short sleeves is shocking to Walt's hormones.

In this instance Brad is 007 and Nate is M, uh, N, but since 007 is sleeping with N, Brad's now quasi-retired and is henceforth Moneypenny. (Yeah, I said it!)

But the fic is really about Ray wooing Walt. Shocking. Most of my ideas these days are about Ray's very unelegant wooing of Walt who is sort of terribly amused by Ray, as he tends to be. Sometimes Walt gets to do his own spy operations, but Ray always seems to show up and interrupt those, normally when N has sent Walt out to seduce someone.

Naturally Nate N and Brad Moneypenny think this is hysterical.

So. Spy!fic. You know, I thought after [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl's magnum epic opus type business I wasn't going to tackle the boys in the desert possibly ever, and clearly this is why spy!fic is the new black.

Instant Rec. Generation Kill : Itch in Your Veins.

Itch in Your Veins by [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl. Generation Kill. Nate/Brad. Ensemble. NC-17. Timeline in the series.

Generation Kill is a tiny fandom. Our canon is closed. It's war-based. It's not pretty (although our boys are). It's not sweet. Or kind. Or open to mass interpretation. It's hard. And mean. And brutally real. It's offensive and rude and so very honest. It doesn't appeal to a lot of people; it doesn't attract a lot of fans or fanfare. We are very much about word of mouth. We don't have a lot of writers (maybe a dozen). We don't have a lot of artists (one, maybe two), but we have a lot of heart. And when we write this fandom, we try to make our works as epic as our canon. Our version of GK is based on an interpretation of an interpretation of an interpretation, which makes us so far removed, we're pretty much in a cave. But sometimes, in the dark, we make something really beautiful... like this story.

Or, as I said in my comment to the author about Itch in Your Veins:

This is absolutely tremendous... [and] as I carry on reading this now I'm absolutely besotted. This the story that all GK stories dream of being when they get big and start mainlining Ripped Fuel. It's beautiful and poetic and so sharp and smart and astute. God, I'm kind of afraid to read the last section, because then there will be no more. I thought my writing was just in hibernation, but with this, I think it's decided to hang up its spurs entirely. You know sometimes you (okay: I) read a story and you're envious, because you just can't execute in that particular manner, or you're in awe, because it's something you'd never think of? With this story, it seems so definitive that a part of me is like, so...

You know those stories that come along and when you're done you're like, "Well... fuck."

This is that story. It doesn't matter if you don't know the fandom. READ IT. You can thank me after.

[inquiring mind]

I somehow found myself reading a critique of one of my stories (no, the point is not what the critique said), that said [Story X] was "a classic [livejournal.com profile] hackthis story."

I have no idea what that means.

The stories I write are the ones I want to see. The ones that I want to write. I've always been firmly of the belief that if you want to see something written you should write it your damn self. But now, I am curious.

What does "a classic [livejournal.com profile] hackthis story" mean to you? Comma abuse? Crack? Lots of cursing? Ari? Discuss.
2009-03-17 06:22 pm

Yes. THIS.

Dear Black/Latino/Asian/People of Color,

You know exactly what this is about: Black Friend Finder.

I'm just saying, we all need to subsidize our incomes at the moment.

<3,
X

ETA: In case you're missing it, this is also a pretty brilliant commentary on Race Fail in general. But for me to spell it out: having a friend that is a Person of Color does not give you carte blanche to act like a jackass. You do not get a free pass just because you have that one friend. Or those two friends. If they're really your friend, then you see them for them and not their skin color. Just saying.
2009-03-16 09:04 am

Is too much to 'splain, I will sum up

Now that I have slept on my initial Kings squee, my non-spoilery thoughts are as follows:

I'm not a Jack fan. I find him tiresome. I can see how the actor was on Gossip Girl, and I do not mean that favorably. He's going to have to work much harder if he thinks I'm giving him David EVER. I'm no longer interested in pairings where I only love one side and think the other person is an unworthy tosser* (Lex/Clark, Draco/Harry).

* And I say this knowing exactly how this storyline is supposed to go. Right now this actor is failing in convincing me that what is supposed to come will be potrayed effectively.

Rev Samuels, Silas and David though? LOVE 'EM. Like hardcore, pet incessantly love. Rev Samuels/David? Yes. Silas/Rev Samuels back in the day? DOUBLE YES.

You can holler at me in the comments if you want to discuss my spoilery thoughts though.

ETA Does anybody have a copy of Lisa Hannigan's 'Sea Sew' or the new Doves 'Kingdom of Rust'? I am totally in the market here.

ETA#2: I have been running around calling Reverend Samuels Reverend Walker, I don't know why. More importantly, why didn't anybody tell me I had it wrong?! Y'all are failing on me. I bet you'd let me go out with my skirt in my knickers too. More fail. Seriously, though, why did I think his name was Rev Walker? Did we even HAVE a Rev Walker? I can only assume that the hotassery fried my brain.
