Music - Unknown Variables.

I am doing some spring cleaning (yes, in August) and I've come across a plethora of music that I want to share with you. I cannot vouch for the entire ouvre of anybody here (apart from Dead Man's Bones, which is Ryan Gosling's band, and OMG!). I digress. As I was saying, I can't vouch for any of the artists per se(apart from Gomez, who are awesome), but what I can tell you is that you will find at least one song on here you will love*. The diversity of choice: blues, rock, country, sultry, swing, dance, etc. will see to that. It's all about the lyrics, man.

So, if you'd come back later and tell me what you liked that'd be kind of awesome.

Unknown Variables
Unknown Variables

1. Dead Man's Bones 'The Room Where You Sleep' <-- Ryan Gosling has a band. It's AWESOME.
2. Gomez 'Natural Reaction'
3. Colin Hay 'No Time'
4. The Watson Twins 'Rebel Soldier'
5. Melody Gardot 'Our Love is Easy' <-- I am notoriously picky about my female singers, but I love her voice.
6. Lisa Shaw 'Like I Want To'
7. Tim Easton 'Burgundy Red'
8. Wild Beasts 'The Devil's Crayon' <-- I once listened to this six times straight.
9. Orie Lavie 'Ruby Rises'
10. Animal Collective 'My Girls' <-- A song not about being a pimp, but about trying to provide for your family.
11. The Boxer Rebellion 'Flashing Red Light Means Go'
12. Travis Graves 'How Can a Human Mind?' <--Travis used to be a pro skateboarder. This is clearly a better profession (ha!)
13. Ida Maria 'Keep Me Warm'
14. The Pretenders 'Almost Perfect' <-- Okay, I lied, everybody likes The Pretenders
15. Volumen Cero 'Chinese Connection'
16. The Silent Years 'On Our Way Home' <-- This just makes me feel happy.

Generation Kill – Sir, Not to Get Homoerotic About This… (Brad Colbert/Nate Fick, R)

I rewatched Generation Kill in its entirety for the first time since the series stopped last September and I have to say: it's even better than I remembered. That doesn't tend to happen to me, oh, ever. I know I've been pimping it for a full year now, well, consider me re-upped for another year. The layers, the characters, the way it's new and vibrant and earth-shattering all over again. The love I feel for those 22 men. Wow.

Recs! Recs! Recs!

One of the many many many things to love about Generation Kill fandom is that you can get people to do, like, pretty much any fucking thing if you harass them or just clap really loudly and make seal noises (trufax).

So when late last night [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl showed Q, A and I her epic poetical masterpiece: The Care and Keeping of the Iceman by Ray Person, Cpl. USMC, which is also a teaser for a story she's writing right now, I just KNEW it had to be shared immediately, because only in GK can you write this sort of poem:

This is Ray. Ray hates that bitch. Ray wants to fuck her shit up.
Brad doesn't listen to Ray about girls. Given that Ray likes Walt, this is probably wise.
This calls for command.

This is Nate. He's the lieutenant.
He wants Brad, but we're pretending we don't know that.
Save Brad, LT! You can do it with your cock-sucking lips!

READ IT. Your life will be better for it. Also, if anybody felt compelled to draw stick figure art for the betterment of society, you know, that would be fucking AWESOME. I'd do it myself but I have no scanner to share it with the class. I may have to just draw it on a napkin and put it in the post to L. Hmmm. ETA: NOW WITH ART BY [livejournal.com profile] bijoux!!

And then, once you are done with that astounding lyrical brilliance I expect you to go over to [livejournal.com profile] sparky77's LJ and read her masterpiece entitled Fucking Rainbows. I know, yes, in our fandom we blaspheme rainbows. And why would we ever do such a thing? Well, you remember that story about the military working a Gay Bomb back in the day (I swear I'm not making that one up)? Imagine if it went off around Second Platoon. Like sex pollen only wayyyyyyyyy better.

While you are there you should also encourage her to write Ray's Guide to Why Brad and Nate Should Fuck so I don't have to. It's an alphabetical rhyme as it were. Maybe I will see if she wants to collaborate.

Southland people, I promise you I would never ever ever ever forget you. You know that comment!fic [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl started the other day? The one where Ben buys a dildo called The Cop Killer ... ... Yes, I actually typed that sentence (I just had to go back and make sure that I really just typed that sentence). Well. It became a story. Yes, one comment has turned into eight pages of FILTH. Read Call 911. Have a defibrilator nearby for when you go into cardiac arrest from porn overdose.

You see how I make fandom a better place by encouraging these activities? I know, I love you too. And yes, comment-fest continues, I'm just a little busy right now and can't be as prompt with turn around as I like.
2009-08-10 03:18 pm

War, Southland and comment-fic, oh my!

It's interesting that the plague showing up in China and the Birthers bullshit only kind of makes me nervous, but [livejournal.com profile] tomricks interrupting his vacation to blog about shit falling apart in Iraq makes me want to crawl under my desk and kiss my ass goodbye.

Also, this article about a personal trainer who put on 88 lbs. just so he could lose it and see what it's like for his clients is pretty compelling. I think this is going to make him a much stronger trainer.

I feel like I'm saying this every time I post (and I probably am, too bad!), BUT, for those stragglers who aren't on the train yet. NBC is re-airing Southland right now in the run up to the premiere (Sept 25th) on Friday nights at 8pm. You can also watch it on NBC.com and on Hulu. They have the first four episodes up (there are only seven), so please, please please, watch it. You won't regret it. Really.

In other Southland news: Michael and Ben start filming tomorrow. If I was any more excited I'd bounce out of my chair. Oh, wait, and L is writing me comment!porn featuring slutty!Ben. You all wish you had an L, but she is mine. Okay, jointly shared with Q and A. And her family. And all of you, but you know what I mean.

Offer Redux!: Oh, and I've been thinking, you know, I had so much fun the last time around that if anybody's got some like photos or something and might want some comment-fic, you know, I think I'm open for business.* Who knows, you might even get L, A and Q to play along too. Then again, they might all boycott and you'll be stuck with me. ;-)

*You know how it goes.
2009-08-09 09:24 am

DOOD.

I think to read this LJ is to know that I have a very strong aversion to spoilers of any kind. Since most of my fandoms are very small, or, in fact, closed (GK), I don't have to deal with being spoiled too often. However. Today, I was spoiled for S2 of Southland by Michael Cudlitz, who plays John Cooper. And this is where I talk about said spoiler that can also be found behind the cut )

I also saw The Hurt Locker this weekend. Generation Kill people, should see this movie. )
2009-08-06 01:52 pm

We break for gratuitous hotass.

Hi. My Name is Ryan Gosling and I am the Hottest Man on the Planet.

I am a brilliant actor (see The Believer, The Slaughter Rule and yes, even The Notebook <-- shut up).
I can sing. (Plz to watch this video).
I have a goddamn tattoo of The Giving Tree (Yes, the children's book).
I am so hot [livejournal.com profile] hackthis cast me as Jamie for Telegraph Avenue and then wrote sex scenes just so she could think about me naked.

I am so hot that [livejournal.com profile] hackthis would hit this... In a box. In a plane. In a car. In a train.
[livejournal.com profile] hackthis would hit this here. Or there. [livejournal.com profile] hackthis would hit this anywhere.
In fact, I am so hot that [livejournal.com profile] hackthis would even consider kissing Katy Perry if I was on the other side of that.

In short. Ladies and gentlemen, Ryan Fucking Gosling FTW.

ETA: R.I.P. John Hughes. Wow.

L'Homme Nate – A GK AU in 1057 words.

1. Is anybody else so excited to see Bryce Larkin Matt Bomer in White Collar that they're about to pass out?

2. I'm cluttering up L's LJ with Southland filth. She is being very tolerant,

This is an off-the-cuff ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] shoshannagold. I'd tried to write you fisting, per L's suggestion, but that just didn't work out at ALL. Some places I just can't go. This is also for Nate, who is having one hell of a rough patch. I still love you, baby, even if you are currently being used ill.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things (Navel Gazing R Us)

My Favorite Mix
This past weekend I was cleaning out some of my mediafire folders and came across the file for When the Bullet Comes 'Round, which is a fanmix that I made last year for Generation Kill. I've been sharing music for many many years now. Made more mixes than you can count on your fingers and toes and my fingers and toes, but this one is unquestionably my favorite. The flow, the message. If you ever think what kind of music does X like? this mix will give you the answer: Everything.

My Favorite Story That I've Written
Speaking of favoritest, I know I said it when I posted it, but I've been writing for a not inconsiderable amount of time and I'm pretty prolific and out of every story I have ever written Son is on a Midnight Run Like DeNiro or We're All Just Train Wrecks Waiting for the Crash (Southland) is bar none my favorite story. Cross fandom. If I'm only ever remembered for one story I hope it's this one.

My Favorite Story Under 15,000 words That I Wrote.
I like getting into fandoms at the very beginning. I like getting in there before fanon has cemented into something implacable, and if that's not possible, then god knows I love taking charge of characters that nobody else gives a shit about. I think the greatest example of this is Theodore Nott, who is such a throw away character in Harry Potter that he's mentioned one time in one book and then never heard from again. But in 2004 J.K. Rowling mentioned that she'd once had plans for Theodore. That he had a history with Draco, but that he didn't really like Draco, and one throwaway line turned into The Thousandth Man Verse, which is the story of Theodore Nott and all those Slytherins that are maligned by the masses. That entire universe is about Theodore and Neville Longbottom, but it's the story that made me think about what it means to be a Slytherin in the first place that I chose. Don’t Be Shallow

My Favorite GK Stories
When [livejournal.com profile] yuletide came around last winter, my only desire in life was a) to write Generation Kill fic and b) for other people to write Generation Kill fic. And lo was the fandom gifted with many many tremendous things. And so I say unto you if you are just tuning in: read [livejournal.com profile] alethialia's The Temptation of the LT, which is so good I'm still sending her feedback on it eight months later (trufax, you can ask her), [livejournal.com profile] sparky77's On How Sergeant Colbert is Nothing At All Like Winnie the Pooh, and Other Important Lessons That Can Be Learned While Observing the Sergeant Laying under a Jeep, because she undoubtedly has the best Ray voice in GK and [livejournal.com profile] lunasky's Free Falling Through the Nighttime Sky because that is how you write a love story about guys. To this pile I would also undoubtedly add [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl's Itch in Your Veins, which has the distinction of being so gorgeous I wanted to smash my keyboard over my own head. (I also recommend anything I've previously listed here)

Other Miscellaneous Recommendations (Because I can)
1. Tom Ricks Blog, for anybody who might like to actually hear an informed opinion on the war. There is nothing hotter than a man who knows what the fuck he's talking about and not just forming words out his ass. (Feed here [livejournal.com profile] tomricks)
2. [livejournal.com profile] scrunchy's Covered in Rain, or How We Really Said Goodbye, a story written for [livejournal.com profile] slodwick's 1000 word challenge, which almost three years later still makes me go emo.
3. SOUTHLAND. Which has started airing repeats in its new Friday 8pm slot. If you only listen to one recommendation I make, listen to this one. Watch this show. The first four episodes are up now
4. The Best Part of Breaking Up by [livejournal.com profile] fryadvocate, which has the distinction of being the first and only Barbie story I've ever read (not including coloring books naturally). And did I mention it's from Ken's POV?
5. The Wire. As evidenced by the listing above, I'm not really into fluffy stories (Bar Ken). I like things that make you feel like somebody just kicked you in the teeth or stomped in your foot or reached in your chest and twisted out your heart. The Wire has the distinction of not only doing that, but teaching you about how and why cities fall apart. About how what you think of as 'urban problems' are universal problems. So goes one, so goes us all.

Generation Kill - The Messenger (Rated PG, Warning for Character Death)

I want to make it very clear upfront that this is not my fault. You can blame [livejournal.com profile] alethialia and [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl. There was some question about whether or not I could angst with the best of them. As someone who used to kill people for sport (Harry Potter people know exactly what I'm talking about) I take great offense to this.

So. This is a writing exercise to see how badly this could possibly this hurt. I had to get it done. I never said I wasn't a little sadistic (masochistic).

Generation Kill – The Same Things As Everyone (Colbert/Fick, PG)

This started as comment fic in [livejournal.com profile] alethialia's journal for this photo and then I cleaned it up (and expanded it) a bit (a lot bit) because, well, I really like it. I don't tend to write from Brad's POV. I should do more work on this exercise.

Oh, come the fuck on!

Dear Bloomsbury (and anybody else in publishing who didn't get this memo):

Let's just put it out there right now: When your protagonist is a mixed race child with curly hair and dark skin, putting a WHITE CHILD on the cover to sell copies? NOT FUCKING OKAY.

The message you are sending to other mixed race kids and minorities? NOT OKAY.

Not letting the author chose what face her book presents to the world. Say it with me now... NOT OKAY!

Holy baby Jesus that's a lot of fail.

I couldn't even wait until morning to get it out of my system, because I don't like things fucking with my sleep patterns.

No love,
Somebody who really wants to buy that damn book but just can't bring herself to give you any more of her hard earned money.

Excuse me I must go decompress by finally listening to [livejournal.com profile] thisisbone and [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine and watching Fast & Furious. And to not completely bring everybody's mood down, um, shit, I had some good news somewhere...oh, yes, Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] random_flores, you are an awesome friend.

Music Monday!

1. GK fen, Don’t Lick Your Fingers When You Turn the Page by [livejournal.com profile] nightanddaze is a gorgeous, lyrical study of Brad and Nate (and a Sharpie) in and out of theater. Definitely recommended.

1a. ETA: I forgot to mention that I wrote some GK comment!fic over here for A. It's a long thread, but you know how I we are. Keep scrolling, it's worth it. And now there's even more! I really should look into get paid per comment.

1b. ETA #2: Robert Downey Jr. (or as I call him, the first Mrs. Ari Gold) is all about the circumstantial homosexuality. Shocking, people.

2. People who are into cartoons, might be interested to know that Cartoon Network's The Super Hero Squad Show (26x30), which is slated to debut on Cartoon Network in the US this September 2009 will feature the following voice overs: Shawn Ashmore as Iceman, LeVar Burton as Rhodey, Taye Diggs as the Black Panther, Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) as Dormammu, Greg Grunberg as Ant-Man, Mark Hamill as the Red Skull, Lena Headey as the Black Widow, Tricia Helfer as Sif, Cheryl Hines as Stardust, Wayne Knight as Egghead, James Marsters as Mr. Fantastic, Jennifer Morrison as the Wasp, Adrian Pasdar as Hawkeye, Kevin Sorbo as Ka-Zar, George Takei as Galactus and Michelle Trachtenberg as the Galkyrie, and Stan Lee as the voice of the Mayor of Super Hero City. (Inorite!)

3. Don't you fucking hate it when there's a song you love and you can't find the blasted thing anywhere to buy? Yeah, I totally hate that. Listen to Bill Baylis 'Better Man' here anyway. (It sounds like somebody unearthed Richard Ashcroft and Seal doing a duet with the London Community Gospel Choir Yes, really).

And on the subject of music, apparently it's been quite some time since I provided you lot with new sounds for your ears. My bad! I like to call this mix: Things I Think You Should Be Listening To, So Listen Now, Dammit!* (Good for exercising, driving in the car, grocery shopping, breathing, doing the laundry and in general just chanting along while doing cult activities like creating art and writing porn).

Listen to This
Listen to This

1.Doves 'Jetstream' <-- From 'Kingdom of Rust', which is an album actually worth waiting three years for
2. Regina Spektor 'Eet'
3. Matt & Kim 'Daylight' <-- Yes, from that damn commercial, and exceedingly better than whatever it's selling.
4. The Knux 'Bang Bang'
5. Green Day 'Know Your Enemy'
6. Slow Club 'Christmas TV' <-- If this song doesn't steal your heart, you are soul-less I tell you. Even my wizened, black shriveled up heart unclenched at this one.
7. Public Enemy 'Fight the Power' <-- CLASSIC
8. Lily Allen 'Him'
9. Brandtson 'Earthquakes & Sharks' <-- An ode to all the things that'll kill you in Mexico and California. Killer bees, chupacabra and all.
10. Estelle 'American Boy'
11. Sam & Ruby 'Heaven's My Home' <-- The unofficial theme for 'Son is on a Midnight Run Like DeNiro'
12. Palenke Soultribe 'No Voy a Morir'
13. Stevie Wonder 'Higher Ground'
14. The New York Fund 'The Guns of Camden Town' <-- I've been listening to this song for six months and it never gets old

My president > your president.

Dear President Awesome:

I admit I don't pay as much attention to the news cycle now as I did when I was campaigning for you, mostly because you are in the White House now and I trust you take care of shit as you see fit. We don't always agree, but I always trust you to do the right thing and I can't say that for many people. This means I can just go about my day, trying not to bitch slap people over 'the racism against white men' or black kids being told they change they complexion of a pool* or those damn confirmation hearings.

And yet, apparently, America is "post-racial". Uh, since when?

As far as I can tell people only use the phrase "post-racial" when they want to say 'I voted for Obama so naturally I can't be a racist.'

Wait. This isn't about that.

This is about me coming home and finding out that you addressed the Alleged Racial Profiling of Henry Louis 'Skip' Gates^* and immediately thinking AND THAT IS WHY I BUSTED MY ASS MAKING HUNDREDS OF CALLS.**

I love you like I love Stephen. And Guy.

xxx,
Me

These are a few of my favorite things.

There was no porn in my inbox this morning. That's... that's sad people. What the hell?

Last week, Michael Cudlitz and Ben McKenzie went to the race track to get ready for the start of S2 Southland filming. ROWR. Yesterday, they went to the gun range. Michael. Ben. I, um, this needs porn.

(Yes, Southland is coming back. It has not been cancelled. PLEASE. If you enjoyed Son is on a Midnight Run Like DeNiro at all, watch this series when it airs in the fall.

Michael says I am required to bring him 1 million viewers. Come here and tell me you are watching, so I can add you to my quota. With [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl, [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 and myself I only need... 999,997 more!). ETA: That's another five. Twelve Eighteen! Come guys, only 999,982 left!

c. Brian Williams: I'm Mark Sanford
Jon Stewart: Am I your wife or your mistress?

Yes, It's true. I totally fucking ship Brian Williams/Jon Stewart. I am not ashamed to admit this. They'd probably admit it, too.

[livejournal.com profile] kaneko wrote an absolutely gorgeous Generation Kill story, Tourists. There's something so compelling about the way [livejournal.com profile] kaneko writes Brad and Nate. She manages to transport you into her world with just a few sentences, make you feel everything acutely without overselling anything. Everything she does just feels so damn natural. Encourage her, people. Your fandom requires this.
2009-07-20 08:20 am

Where you been?

So, for anybody who hasn't been playing along at home, last week I made an offer that I would write porn for SFW photos, and for the past, oh.... five six days or so [livejournal.com profile] alethialia, [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl and I (with special guest apperances by [livejournal.com profile] sparky77, [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs and art by [livejournal.com profile] trolleys!) have been writing porn.

A LOT of porn.

Mostly Generation Kill (a little Get Some-verse. Some of L's Grace-verse. Some stoned!Nate. A lot of filth. Really, really, really good filth). With a little slutty!Ben Southland thrown in because nobody could resist stubbly!Cooper. A Leverage ode. And Brad Pitt as a prince. No, really.

[livejournal.com profile] alethialia has been most patiently and dilligently keeping track of what's what here, you know, if the thought of wading through 700+ comments (we talk a lot) seems a bit daunting and you're just after the porn. If you've ever been curious about how any of us write, though, (more specifically how we come up with our ideas), well, it's pretty evident that we are contagious around each other. Like the swine flu. But with porn.

Um, yeah. 's about it really.

Have a nice Monday.
2009-07-15 12:54 pm

Ah, people. Failing since evolution began.

1. The word of the day is clusterfuckiest. Trufax.

2. I'm a big fan of the part where a summer camp that rented a pool in north PhillY for $1900 were told they weren't welcome, because they changed the complextion of the pool. Keep it classy, racist assholes!

3. If I think too hard about the confirmation hearings, I might stroke out, so...

4. YAY, Leverage premieres tonight!

5. And Matt Damon is going to be on Entourage! So, that means that Matt and Ari are going to be hanging out. And I didn't even have to write it! Yeah, I know, who's the man? All they need now is RDJ... you know since I write it and it happens. Excuse me, I have to go write myself winning ten million dollars. BRB.

6. Ryan Gosling is releasing his album in October. I WANT IT NOW.

6a. Anybody got the new Regina Spektor album (Far) that they wanna share with the class.

7. An Offer: Anybody who wants to come over here and give me a photo prompt that maybe might result in some drabble porn to make the masses happy is more than welcome.

If you just want to picspam the pretty to you know, help the general mood, that's awesome too. In fact, feel free to come and post photos and write your own porn too! But it's gotta be a photo. And SFW. It can be a party!

Mostly I'm just trying to make [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl smile, so help a sister do a good deed.
