Dear President Awesome:

I admit I don't pay as much attention to the news cycle now as I did when I was campaigning for you, mostly because you are in the White House now and I trust you take care of shit as you see fit. We don't always agree, but I always trust you to do the right thing and I can't say that for many people. This means I can just go about my day, trying not to bitch slap people over 'the racism against white men' or black kids being told they change they complexion of a pool* or those damn confirmation hearings.

And yet, apparently, America is "post-racial". Uh, since when?

As far as I can tell people only use the phrase "post-racial" when they want to say 'I voted for Obama so naturally I can't be a racist.'

Wait. This isn't about that.

This is about me coming home and finding out that you addressed the Alleged Racial Profiling of Henry Louis 'Skip' Gates^* and immediately thinking AND THAT IS WHY I BUSTED MY ASS MAKING HUNDREDS OF CALLS.**

My thoughts exactly. There are times when he makes decisions that I don't like/agree with, but there's a comfort in knowing that he's a good man and will make the right decision more often than not. <3

I don't expect I'll agree with anybody all the time ('cause that would be insane). All I'm really looking for in a president is that he/she is intelligent, not-crazy and doesn't have any daddy issues. So, the above means Obama is hittin' it out of the park by my standards!

Almost every day I draw hearts around the man, Z. I swear to god. Our president is made of awesome. Even when I don't agree, I feel as though he is a good man making rational decisions for the greater good of the country.

I loved that he acknowledged the racism openly, because he's been so careful about that. (And I wish I could find a TV interview I swear I saw Obama do after the 2004 DNC speech, because I'm sure he talked about being stopped by the cops when he was out jogging in his new neighbourhood soon after he moved to Hyde Park. I'm pretty sure I wasn't hallucinating that.)

I am not even American let alone black, but seeing those Obama of Awesome and Tyler Perry stories made me ridiculously happy. (An antidote to the disbeliving anger I felt the other day when I read the pool complexion article.) And that's why racism is such a kick in the teeth: you don't even have to relate to it directly to be offended by it; experiencing it has got to be an even more noxious kettle of toxic waste. It's just plain counterproductive, and harmful to the whole of humanity.

I realise that an inherent part of our common human nature is being assholes, but stuff like this does make me wonder when we're going to pull the collective racist stick out of our ass and start using it for something useful, like getting down apples to feed the starving millions.

Anyone who seriously believes that America is post-racial has not been listening to the Republican stream-o-crap. Honestly, I expect racial bullshit from my redneck rural Idaho neighbors because most of them are ignorant inbred alcoholics, hearing the same line from supposedly intelligent and educated people makes me severely depressed.

I love having Obama as president because he's a good and honorable man. We need more people like him in charge.
