It's been a while since I've given back to the community, err, shared some music, so I thought today would be a good day. Here are few songs that are spinning me around these days:

Alfie 'Cloudy Lemonade' – Alfie was part of the late 90s-early 00s barrage of next big thing Brit-pop-soft-rockers that were all going to be the next Radiohead or the next Verve or the next Stone Roses.* Sadly, they got eaten alive in the melee, but I have a special place for this song in my heart, though I haven't the foggiest idea why. What can I say, it's just fucking catchy as hell.

*Like Coldplay, back when Coldplay didn't suck as much as they do now. Right now they blow. A lot. The Paltrow-Ono curse for sure.

Chuck Berry 'You Never Can Tell' – Okay, this song will forever be cool because a) it's Chuck Berry, b)it's about a shotgun wedding of sorts and c) it's part of the only good film Quentin Tarantino made. Wait, he made Kill Bill so I can't say that anymore, regardless, this song is still impossibly cool. Too cool for Tarantino. If Tarantino were as cool as he thinks he is then he might be worthy of this song. Might.

Jamie Cullum 'All at Sea' – I like songs about the sea... Morcheeba's 'The Sea', Doves 'Sea Song,' so one would think I was predisposed to liking this song before hand, but I'm not sure that's the case. I think it could've been called anything else and I still would've loved it, because of the sentiment, and the pureness of Jamie's voice and how infectious his enthusiasm is. He sings about how good a little time away can be, and how even when things suck you know it won't last forever. Could someone else say I sleep by myself, I drink on my own, don't speak to nobody, I gave away my phone and have you think it's a good thing?

Junior Senior 'Move Your Feet' – I saw JS perform about three years ago, before the video with the squirrel, and my first thought was WTF is this? One rotund gay boy and one scrawny straight boy singing about coconuts? It's like a set up for a joke about walking into a lesbian bar, and yet, when they played this song it was like a siren call for the masses. If ever there was a song to make you get up and dance, this is it.

Keane 'Sunshine' – I don't like Keane. No, really, I don't. Their pasty faced lead singer looks as though his mum hit him with a frying pan, and he tends to bleat when he sings. While I did think 'Somewhere Only We Know' was cute when it was still a trickle of a song, the ensuing radio deluge left me cold rather quickly. Having said that, however, I got this song off of a Promo Sampler last year, and since I tossed the CD once it'd been uploaded, I didn't know who sang this song until this week. It's a beautiful song, but I still don't like Keane. That's being objective.

Reindeer Section 'You Are My Joy' – There are four elements that I love in my music: trumpets, pianos, acoustic guitars and soul-ripping vocals. This song has, err, one of the four, but the vocals are by Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol fame. Reindeer Section is his pet project and I have both LPs, which sadly don't do much for me. This song, however, makes both albums worth their weight in gold.

Ryan Adams 'AMY' – I used to talk about Ryan Adams a lot. Like, at least once a week. I talked about him almost as much as I talked about Jeff Buckley, and the reason I stopped isn't because I don't appreciate him, because really, I do. Somewhere along the line though Ryan started thinking that more was better, and it's not, at least not always. For every thing Ryan gets right, he gets two other things wrong, but if you want alt-country meets Sad Bastard Music, Ryan is your man. I'm sure a lot more people know him for his hate/hate relationship with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, or the very defunct-Whiskeytown, or his wake of girlfriends. No matter, he truly one of the most prolific and gifted song writers around. He released his second double album of the year last month and will release another before the year is out. I still think his first CD was his best, and this song is from that.
