I’m very prolific this weekend -- perhaps it’s the rain.

The Title is Never as Clever as the End

Prologue

“Relationships fall apart because somebody disappointed somebody else and they took it badly,” he said to his companion as their car slowly plodded through mid-town traffic.

The other man pretended not to hear, choosing instead to focus on the raindrops running down the windowpane outside. He reached out to trace their patterns, but found that he could never quite get them right. Chaos Theory in full effect he thought, as he stared at the faded blue ink on the back of his hand.

“I mean disappointment is a huge thing. People try to brush it off, but you can‘t because it‘s fucking disappointing, right? It’s being let down. Most of the time you can‘t even put your finger on it when it happens. Cheating, lying, finding out that somebody‘s not really a blonde, they‘re all forms of deception. They‘re all disappointing.” The first man cleared his throat and began tapping his pockets for his cigarettes. He grunted out a thank you when his companion wordlessly offered his own.

The click of a cheap lighter echoed endlessly in the back of the Town Car as the more loquacious man cracked open his window to let the smoke out.

His companion glared daggers as he re-pocketed his lighter without offering him a light.

i. Billy and Elijah

Elijah is the one Billy calls when things end with Ali. He would call Dom, but he’s too close to the issue at hand and Elijah’s only met Ali a handful of times. Elijah says all the right things at the wrong times. He’s the one that Billy needs to talk to.

True to form, Elijah doesn’t disappoint. He has Billy over to his flat the next time he’s in the country, and he assures Billy that he’s better of without her. He cites all the women who would give their siblings just to get down Billy’s trousers. Billy doesn‘t quite smile during this exchange, but he knows that Elijah‘s freelove advise is most likely what he needs. Orli‘s not the one to call at a time like this, and Billy’s got no desire to finger-paint while Viggo looks over his shoulder and offers his psychologically fucked-up interpretations.

Elijah takes Billy out and gets him pissed to the gills and then brings him back to his flat and climbs into bed beside him. When they have sex it‘s just a physical, animalistic thing that‘s nothing like the soft touches Billy shared with Ali.

Elijah takes and takes and doesn’t offer anything in return except his body. He fucks like it’s a sport, which is what 23 year-old men do.

Elijah doesn’t expect anything in return, and Billy can’t be disappointed by someone who wants nothing from him. He knows it’s for the best.

The morning after, there‘s no weirdness about the night before. It‘s just one friend helping another friend out. Billy could never have had this kind of casual sex with Dom.

ii. Elijah and Dom

Elijah and Dom aren’t together together like people want to think they are. They fuck a lot, and fuck around a lot, and as far as Elijah‘s concerned there‘s really nothing more.

Except.

Except that Dom wants more than Elijah is willing to give, and it can only turn out badly in the end.

Elijah is too young to settle down. He’s at his peak in his work and his social life and his libido is this ravenous thing. He doesn’t need Dom glowering at the back of his head when he wants to take somebody else home. It’s nothing personal, it’s just a physical thing. An attraction to someone who’s not him.

But Dom doesn’t understand, and when they’re under the same roof they’re practically fucking domestic. Elijah doesn’t want that. He doesn’t want to hurt Dom either, but Elijah’s being smothered and he knows New York is his way out.

He’s sorry to disappoint Dom, but Dom‘s 27 and shouldn’t he be used to things like that by now?

iii. Dom and Billy

If you’re not looking for something, you won‘t see it; and it’s a fairly simple concept that seems to continually elude Dom.

He thought Elijah wanted to be with him and that’s why he came to America. But he found out otherwise when Elijah suddenly packed up his bags and left him behind.

Dom thought that Billy was his best mate -- but when he found himself being tossed over for Elijah, all he could do is ask himself why.

The disappointment breaks his heart time and time again, and at first he blames himself for not being what other people want. But as time goes on, he realises that it’s nothing to do with him at all -- it’s just the way people are. They’re made to disappoint.

So when Elijah comes back to Los Angeles and wants things to go back to the way they were before, Dom’s got opinions all his own about how he’s not letting Elijah back into his heart anymore. And when Billy finally comes to him, fucking finally, Dom lets him know that things have changed now. Love is all well and good, but it’s done nothing for Dom but left him all alone. So Dom’s closed his heart off to people who continually let him down and he thinks it‘s the best way.

It’s not necessarily how Dom wants things to be, but he’s learned that the only way to get over disappointment is to learn how to cope on your own.

Dom may not be America's newest heartthrob or the thinking woman's Man of the Moment, be he knows you can’t treat people like shit and expect them to come back to you.

Pain is good -- in moderate doses I mean.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Elijah says all the right things at the wrong times.

I actually highlighted that as I was reading it. Read it twice. Three times.

Huh.

Love is all well and good, but it’s done nothing for Dom but left him all alone.

God, how do you *always* manage to do this?? Every.Single.Time I read your work, I'm hit by the fact that you always manage to pull it off with such rhythm - and as if that wasn't enough, you just *have* to throw in things like this:

The disappointment breaks his heart time and time again, and at first he blames himself for not being what other people want. But as time goes on, he realises that it’s nothing to do with him at all -- it’s just the way people are. They’re made to disappoint.

Excellent!! (scurrying off to read it again)

Me too! In that tittering, it's late and I'm going insane way. Such a good line and ficceh, even if I'm pouting.

[Sorry to respond to your review. Naughty of me. Billy's thighs made me do it. And where the heck did Hip Motions go before I could review, woman?!]

Awww. Dude, poor Dom is taking a beating this weekend. *pets Dom*

He’s sorry to disappoint Dom, but Dom‘s 27 and shouldn’t he be used to things like that by now?

I hate that 27 is old. hate hate hate.

But, that's just it, dude, we are SO not old. But, like, to somebody who's 23, we're, like, old. Remember when you were 20 and thought 25 was ancient? Exactly.

I live with 23 year olds! They're always, like, running around doing stuff and I'm all "leave me alone to watch my TV shows, dammit!"

This is most likely more my problem than theirs.

the fuck? how did i miss this? *repents*

*waves hand around vaguely* the thing is that disappointment is this fundamental constant in your life, and you convey that so well here, along with all the pain that accompanies it. it's not pleasant and never welcome, but it's needed, otherwise we'd never mature. we'd never get a fucking grip. and it's typical human shit that elijah wants dom back. it's what i love about your writing - it's just so solid and human. it's about people fucking up and trying to get some kind of foothold, the best way they can. we all need to find a way to cope. i'm just sorry dom had to close himself up.

I talked about this is some entry last week or this week or somewhere recently. My entire interest when it comes to writing is the Human Condition (yes, capitalized) and how we all cope, adjust, don't adjust or just move along. I think people are fucking fascinating. When people talk about evolution, I don't *just* think about tadpoles and fish, I think about people and their learning curves.
