Attempt #1

I saw the future Mr [livejournal.com profile] hackthis in a movie called Intermission this weekend. (He's mine, [livejournal.com profile] bezzy!) It had some other people in it, but I wasn’t really paying attention to them since all I could think was Cillianfreckleshotnessjaysisonthecross. So, yeah. Not a movie for everyone certainly, but Intermission has a certain Lock, Stock meets Roddy Doyle meets The Butcher Boy element about it if that’s your thing.

Also, I picked up the new Zero 7 after giving my mate’s copy a trial run, and you know how sometimes you hear a song and all you can think is that was *so* written for me? Well, that’s how I feel about ‘Speed Dial #2’. It’s an absolutely gorgeous song. Not necessarily happy, but excellent for those with a self-sufficiency streak. Also, [livejournal.com profile] serialkarma gave me a theme for this week: Happiness. This does not mean everything I produce will be happy this week, it’s just going to be more about the idea in general.

[random] I keep seeing people talking about the wombat and I have to tell you its weird. Not that people are talking about him, but that people, like, know about that nickname at all. Yes, v weird.[/random]

Lastly, [livejournal.com profile] edigo made me icons for my Third Man series, so this is for her.

Being happy takes a lot of work. It is a lot of work. Billy didn’t quite realise that the first time he and Dom were together. He didn’t quite realise how hard it was and what an effort it took just to stick it out. More so than most people reckon.

The second time around, though, he’s got a bit more experience under his belt. Ali taught Billy that being with someone and staying with them is a lot more work than most people are willing to sign on for. And yet, Billy didn’t say no when Dom came around again. Actually, Billy found he couldn’t really say no. Most people would tell him that giving this, them, a second go would be insanity –- but Billy’s found life without Dom to be much more maddening than life with him.

*

“Tosser.”

“Prat.”

“Twat.”

“That rhymes.”

“Stop getting distracted.”

“Sorry –- where was I?”

“Prat.”

“Right –- wanker.”

“Well, obviously, I mean it’s not like you’re here or anything.”

“Right.”

“How’s Hawaii then anyway?”

“Not bad. Wish you were here though.”

“I know the feeling.”

*

Dom’s accent is at its strongest when he’s excited. Everything comes out in a intelligible Mancunian wash of Liam Gallagher-ness that makes Billy bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing himself stupid. Dom’s accent is endearing and heart-warming and all sorts of fey adjectives that Billy really doesn’t need to think about when Dom’s thousands of miles away, and Billy’s only got Ms Rosie Palm and her five mates to keep him company. Except that Dom rings him every night from Hawaii to tell him how the days shooting’s gone, and his reports are a nonsensical ramble of ‘right’ and ‘so’ and ‘innit’ and ‘miss you.’

*

“How’s the weather?”

“It’s gray.”

“Is it really?”

“It is in the morning. It’s a bit like Glasgow in March. Less rain.”

“It’s not raining, is it?”

“No, I wouldn’t mind it though.”

“Do you really hate California so much?”

“It’s just –- it’s different.”

“Yeah.”

“Aye.”

“Are we still talking about the weather?”

“Dunno.”

*

Billy needs to move to Los Angeles like he needs another hole in his head. He needs to look for a Hollywood job like he needs a drug habit. He’s done just fine in Scotland so far. He doesn’t need any of the things that Dom so desperately seems to crave –- but he does need Dom, so he’ll make adjustments if he has to. Being happy doesn’t come cheap.

*

“If this doesn’t work out, I thought –“

“It’ll work out.”

“But if it doesn’t.”

“Dom, it’ll work.”

“We don’t know that.”

“Yes, we do.”

*

The problem with attempting to make a second go of it with Dom is that Billy’s not sure he’s ready for this. It. He’s old enough for commitment, sure, but that’s not really what he’s on about. Billy’s problem is that he’s not sure he’s ready to be this happy with Dom. As much as he loves Dom, there’s always been something between them - the mere possibility of their being together again – that’s kept him slightly on edge. The possibility has made him uneasy and hopeful and content and motivated all at the same time. Billy knows this edge. It’s become a part of his life. It’s been a reason to get on with whatever he’s been doing. The potential has always been enough, but now the potential is reality. It’s there to muck up all over again, and it’s –- it’s pretty fucking terrifying is what it is.

When you have everything you want –- what gets you up in the morning?

*

“Did you know we have a three month shooting hiatus between seasons?”

“You’ve not even finished the pilot yet.”

“So?”

“Putting the cart before the horse, don’t you think?”

“Pfft.”

“Was that actually a word?”

“Shut it. I’m trying to talk here.”

“Well then get on with it.”

“I am, Christ, impatient aren’t you?”

“This phone call isn’t cheap.”

“I rang you!”

“Oh, well, anyway. You were saying?”

“I was thinking maybe, if you want, I could come spend the hiatus with you. In Glasgow.”

“I was -- what about LA and your great film career, and all that?”

“You can have the great film career, and I can have you and everyone will be happy.”

Dom.”

“Sound all right with you?”

“Well, yeah, but –“

“Lovely.”

“Dom.”

“We’ll make it work. We’ll be happy. You’ll see, all right?”

“All right.”

“Good.”

-end-

Notes: Title from the song by his Highness, Prince. VH1 Soul had a block of his vids on last night, and I was all ‘oooooh, Prince.’

I love the way you write them. Whenever I read your stories I can always always ALWAYS hear their voices. And this... this is beautiful:

He doesn’t need any of the things that Dom so desperately seems to crave – but he does need Dom, so he’ll make adjustments if he has to. Being happy doesn’t come cheap.

Beautiful, harsh and oh so true.

I saw a pic of Cillian in EW magazine over the weekend and promptly started drooling. Mmmm, yummy. Was debating about the movie but from what you said it sounds worth seeing--slightly unusual films can be fun just for the weirdness factor.

And this story continues to be delicious.

When you have everything you want – what gets you up in the morning?

I hope someday to need an answer to this question. =)

The words 'dark comedy' immediately spring to mind with this film.

Just when I think I can't adore you anymore, you write sentences like: Everything comes out in a intelligible Mancunian wash of Liam Gallagher-ness that makes Billy bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing himself stupid.

Damn you! I have been listening to Oasis non-stop for about four days now. !!!

What a cute little fic. :) I liked the idea of switching off between description and pure dialogue. My favorite line?

Except that Dom rings him every night from Hawaii to tell him how the days shooting’s gone, and his reports are a nonsensical ramble of ‘right’ and ‘so’ and ‘innit’ and ‘miss you.’

Because, in my experience, that's how most phone calls in long distance relationships go. :)

dude, oh my god.

it's the dynamics, gunshot-quick and full of ragged edges and soft curves, and so them. love how at times it's billy who has to pull them through, and then dom. you can't always be on the same page, but when you are, it's just this beautiful amazing thing. and i got that feeling from this (however relutanctly you write them happy).

gud stuff, yo.
