I get what you're interested in. I guess I just disagree with the premise that doing it yourself is really the best way to get what you want. Occasionally it's true, but is it true often enough to trumpet this as the answer with the frequency with which these sentiments are uttered? I don't think so.

I think it really depends on whatever you're looking for. If you're looking for something that you don't think you can produce, then perhaps it helps to ask for assitance, but if you're just looking for a quick-fix then I think it's better to be self-sufficent. I think whatever the case though that you shouldn' *expect* people to give you anything. I think you should be willing to trade or offer tit for tat. The whole I'm-entitled-just-because-I-exist thing gets on my tits something fierce.

Oh I totally agree with you on the whole expectations issue. The whining about what fandom owes "me" drives me crazy and for the type of person who does that incessantly there isn't much else besides a smack in the mouth that will help. I just don't also want to listen to 'em whine that nobody gave feedback on their terrific cutting edge story or no one wants to participate in their dumbass challenge ;)
