This piddling series of drabblish things is brought to you by the number 5 and the Stereophonics.

LOTRips - Various
Distractions

1. Traffic

If you listen long enough people will say something intelligent. Of course the inverse also applies -- if you listen long enough people are bound to say something incredibly daft. Dom tends to break even most of the time, but Billy --Billy prefers not to play the odds. He’s the sort of bloke who looks both ways before crossing the street and leaves gambling to the fools. Billy prefers the sure thing, which is why he knows better than to put his lot in with Dom. Billy knows Dom’s too young for a stable relationship, much in the same way that he knows Elijah isn’t going to give Dom what he wants. Unfortunately, watching the two of them sort it out for themselves is like watching a lorry jackknife across the M8, and all Billy can do is step to the side and try to avoid the wreckage.

2. Mr. Writer

Before the first film, PJ warned them that the press were bound to be a bit excited by four, young (or in Billy’s case, young-ish) stars who clearly knew how to enjoy themselves. He forgot to mention the paparazzi lingering in the back alleys and the girls digging through their rubbish.

Before the second film, Viggo warned them that people were bound to associate them with their characters and to take it in stride. Then he pulled his sword out his rucksack to make his point. He failed to mention that when they went to castings even the directors would only know their hobbit names.

Before the third film, Sir Ian took them aside and reminded them that their sexuality was no one’s business but their own. He forgot to point out that sexuality was fluid at its best, and that even if people (read: Elijah) wanted to shag other people in hotel lifts it shouldn’t have been anyone’s business but their own.

Except for that business with the press.

3. Performance and Cocktails

Billy doesn’t need to drink to say what’s on his mind. However, having a few under his belt certainly never hurt his cause whether that cause be singing, pulling or attempting to use one to do the other.

Of course Billy would never try and pull Dom after all this time just because he’s missing Ali and had four too many. Billy’s far too good a mate to try something like that.

Of course he is.

He would never muck Dom around like that. He would never lean over and sing in Dom’s ear just to see him shudder and lick his lips. That would be wrong. That would be the alcohol talking.

Of course.

4.You Gotta Go There To Come Back

There are all kinds of love in the world. Love for one’s mates and love for one’s partner and one’s family and one’s country -- they’re all different. But they all fall under the same heading, and sometimes it’s easy to see why they get confused. Sometimes it’s easy to see how love for one’s partner could be confused with the love for one’s mates or vice versa or all that other rubbish. Except that Billy doesn’t love Dom the way he loves Ali, and he doesn’t love Ali the way he does Dom. He certainly doesn’t love either of them the way he loves Glasgow.

Unless he does and he’s just been confused all along.

5. Maybe Tomorrow

It’s not unrequited love because that would imply that Dom doesn’t love Billy as much as Billy loves Dom, and Billy knows that’s not the case. It may not be the same sort of love, but then again, maybe it is, because Billy’s read the blind items in the press and looked at the commentary for the DVDs. He’s heard the whispers and seen the glares and concerned glances from Ali and Elijah and Astin and god knows whomelse. So maybe Billy’s not in this alone, whatever this is, and maybe it will all work itself out in the end and everything that’s come before has just been a distraction from the main event.

Maybe tomorrow Dom will ring him up and profess his undying love, and Billy will say it’s about time. Maybe tomorrow Billy will fly out to California and surprise Dom in the middle of his shooting schedule and say everything that he’s only just realised he feels inside. Maybe anything is possible after this time.

-end-

Fuck.

1) That's so painful, isn't it? Watching a relationship fall apart and knowing there's nothing you can do about it.

2) You know, it wasn't until I saw a press pic for Troy that had Orlando, Brad, and Eric sitting at a table & you see the 30-something press people practically mauling them with their cameras that I really realized how much character and patience it takes to do something like that. The situations you used were completely different, but still very real. And you portrayed them in a very interesting light (telling us what happened by not really telling us what happened)

3) Alcohol. The love/hate relationship to top all the others.

4) This one really hit me close to home as I've just come out of a 5-year relationship. It's so amazing how each one of these just... it didn't even feel like I was reading fiction. I almost felt like I was reading notes a psychiatrist took, or something.

5) Nice touch, ending it on a note of hope. I sense some apathy there, too. It's like, he wants to do this and he knows he should, but right now he really just can't be buggered to exert the energy and attempt something.

Glad to see something new from you.
Really enjoyed this (obviously), and will most likely be reccing it, with your permission, of course. :)

The stress from one press junket/ full-press screening will take years off your life. I can't even imagine what doing a series of them for the same film over a series of months must do to someone's brain.

It's so amazing how each one of these just... it didn't even feel like I was reading fiction. I almost felt like I was reading notes a psychiatrist took, or something.

That's the most complimentary thing anyone can say about my writing, that it feels real. That's important to me. Thank you!

p.s. You don't have to ask my permission to rec. I'm just pleased you enjoyed it, full stop.

Very original--I haven't seen anything like it. That was great! Do you plan on doing more with it?

Okay, I had to use this icon to reply even though I have a million LotR actor ones, because...well, duh.

I love Stereophonics, and I love this story. I like how we see it all from Billy's perspective, and how confused he is about it even though he thinks he knows what's going on. Very nice :)

The headings don't belong to me, they're all titles from Stereophonics songs, so you know, do with that what you like :)

Also gorgeous and beautiful writing. You capture Billy so well, in all your fic. This is no exception.

Wow.

Something about that line is just so you. Like, I can totally hear you in my head, saying it out loud.

You really must stop writing so well. You're getting me involved in waaaaaaaaay too many fandoms. *g*

Reading RPS when I should be concentrating - gah what is wrong with me?

Of course I love this, but oh dear god:
He would never lean over and sing in Dom’s ear just to see him shudder and lick his lips. That would be wrong. That would be the alcohol talking.
*shivers* That is so hot - I literally got the chills. You're not supposed to throw in the mental porn when I'm not expecting it! (I had the same reaction when I read the words "Windsor knot" in a fic the other day. My poor brain is having a meltdown)

And look I now have a poky stick! (me----> <----you). Is that obnoxious? I don't care - I have a poky stick!! *dances around*

I covet your icon. Really. Sadly by the time Rupert is legal, well, it's only three years from now, innit? So going to jail. You *want* me to go to jail, don't you? Just remember there'll be no stories when I'm beind bars! Also, your pokey stick looks very phallic.

Dude your icon. When I first saw that pic I about died. Look at his eyes! It makes the ABC special all that more hmm... (Did you see Rupert in his cute shaggy boy with a mullet-ness? It was all about Rupert/Dan)

And you'd be like Martha behind bars - rockin the house.

*still in love with my phallic pokey stick*
*waves pokey stick around in the Special Hell*

Current music: The Streets, 'Fit but Don't You Know It' I LOVE THIS SONG. (It makes me think of you. I don't know if this is good or bad)

I replied to this message, but everything is sucky today and broked. No, not broken, broke-ed. As I said before I'm not sure whether to be offended or not about the Streets thing, so I'll remain neutral, since okay, that's kinda me, but sometimes it's not. Sometimes I just cannae be arsed.
