Meditating is not about asking for things. Dom knows this. He knows meditating is about getting closer to the earth and finding his centre and all that dogmatic tripe, but sometimes, sometimes he finds himself thinking about the things he wants and the things he needs. They’re not the same thing, want and need, but when he’s meditating his mind doesn’t tend to dwell on the distinction.
When Dom’s in the right place his mind focuses on the hardness of his yoga mat and ’push harder’ and ‘trees are our friends.’ But more often than not Dom’s in that other place. The one where the only thing he gets from meditating is a sore bum and his inner voice nagging him with ‘Why are we doing this rubbish when we could just take what we want and have done with it?‘
Yeah, Dom’s mind isn’t quite as well trained as he’d like for it to be, but reaching enlightenment is an on-going process. Nothing worth having comes easy. Except that sometimes rather than working for what he wants, Dom just takes it. Sometimes the yoga and the inner peace get the boot, because if Dom doesn’t take what he wants someone else will get there first. Like Ali.
Dom tried to be enlightened when it came to Billy. He tried to be patient and let Billy come to him, but instead of reaching nirvana, all Dom got was a pat on the arm and an apologetic ‘sorry mate.’
Point of fact, Billy shot down Dom nice and proper -- but at least Dom tried. And then he tried some more. And then he called it a day and went after Elijah instead, because Dom knows when to cut his losses.
If nothing else, Dom knows when it’s time to gather up his things and go.
*
Dom can be pragmatic when he has to be, and it’s not as though he woke up one morning and decided that Elijah would be his next lover -- but that’s not terribly far off the mark either. What it came down to in the end was that Dom couldn’t stop thinking about Elijah’s doll-sized eyes and bow-shaped mouth. Point of fact, just thinking about those things and the paleness of Elijah’s skin interrupted more than one yoga session for Dom; and him being the practical person he is, Dom decided to stop fighting it and have at it.
The harder he tried to deny what he wanted, the more he seemed to need it.
*
Dom can’t remember the name of the bird that Elijah was dating when they were in New Zealand, which says a lot about his repression abilities.
She was nice enough, Dom does remember that, but even when he makes an effort all he can pull up are fuzzy images and a faint Kiwi accent. Every time he tries to pull up a clearer image he sees Hannah instead, and they both agreed that it would be for the best just to forget about that night altogether.
*
Elijah’s neediness is pretty well documented amongst his mates, and while it’s not seen as a bad thing, it’s not necessarily his most endearing trait either. Of course, Dom knows that endearing traits can work both ways, much like Orli’s preternatural prettiness and Viggo’s alpha-male abilities. After all, Orli’s attractiveness is a lot to take first thing in the morning, which is why Dom knows he’s not the first one to do a runner on Orli the morning after; and as for Dom’s blink-and-you'll-miss-it fling with Viggo, well, nobody really wants to be with SuperCaveman. Most people just think they do.
*
When Dom decided to make Elijah his lover, he didn’t give much thought to what it would entail. He didn’t think much about the long months that Elijah would be off on other sets or what it would be like to move 6000 miles from home and not have any mates of his own to go around town with. He doesn’t blame Elijah for his short-sightedness, but all the same, sometimes he can’t help feeling like he was cheated. These are the times when his yoga should be the most beneficial, but it’s not. Because when Dom’s arse over teakettle on his blue plastic mat, practicing his Downward Dog, all the blood in his body rushes to his head and all those thoughts that he’s worked so hard to repress rush to his frontal lobes and give him a headache.
*
Elijah's got a mean kleptomaniac streak, which extends from ashtrays and towels to shirts and trainers and pretty much anything he can get his stubby little fingers on, but because he’s Elijah Wood, nobody ever confronts him about his five-fingered discounts.
Most people don’t even realise that he’s the one nicking their stuff.
Dom though, Dom knows all about this nasty little habit, just like he knows that his own special kind of kleptomania is just as bad. He may not collect other people’s things, but he’s got no problem with collecting other people, full stop. He knows he should meditate on this, but he never seems to get round to it.
*
Dom centres himself as best his can when he and Elijah are with Ali and Billy, but every time he sees Billy with Ali and not with him, he feels cheated. Like he stole something from the shops and then got home with an empty box.
*
Like most kleptomaniacs, what Dom loves the most about the things - people - he acquires isn’t the things themselves, but the rush he gets from taking something that doesn’t belong to him. Eventually the rush he gets from Elijah wears off -- and this is when he goes back to craving Billy.
*
Elijah leaves for New York on a Tuesday, Dom gets the word on Lost on a Thursday, and Billy comes for a visit on a Saturday. This doesn’t all occur in the same week, but somewhere between Elijah leaving and Billy arriving Dom finds some sort of karmic peace in the form of a new yoga mat. At least that’s what he puts it down to. It could be that he nicked Elijah’s favorite knit hat before the bastard left, or maybe it has to do with the fact that with Billy by his side again, he finally has back what Ali stole.

Date: 2004-05-24 01:27 pm (UTC)I loved how this was ALMOST Domlijah. ALMOST. They were in a relationship, but it just didn't feel right, like the keystone was missing and no one noticed.
Excellent job, once again. :)

I adore this because it is so true. All the meditation/yoga bits are dead on, and the way you apply them to Dom's unique situation is lovely.

Date: 2004-05-24 06:55 pm (UTC)Anyhow, I thought it was great. It was a little understated, a little angsty, but mostly just the druggery that is life when you have something and you want something and you don't quite know what to do to fix it, or, even, if you should fix it.
Thank you very much!
