*OMG, K, I went to Borders to buy a book and wound up with 2 CDs (Jamie and Rachael) and 4 DVDs! *weeps* This is where the money goes!

It’s only afterwards, when he starts talking funny because of his split lip and he can feel his eye swelling shut, that he begins to think that defending Harry from Malfoy wasn’t one of his smarter ideas.
It’s not as though Harry can’t take care of himself; and they’re sixteen, isn’t this the point where they’re supposed to stop fighting and start doing other things? Clearly Ron's been listening to Hermione too much, but it was Malfoy, and Ron can’t see straight when Malfoy’s pinched face is in his way.
Except even he can admit that ambushing Malfoy after the Slytherin’s Quidditch practise wasn’t his smartest idea ever, but he’s not the idea person, Hermione is.
Ron’s just -- Ron.

Ron’s not a violent person. He hates it when people say that he is. Yes, he’s willing to let his fists do the talking when words fail him, and yes, sometimes he’s a bit quick with his right, but Ron‘s not prone to overreacting. He only fights when he has to, when people won‘t listen to reason, because Ron grew up the youngest of six boys and the youngest is always treated as though he‘s got treacle for brains. It’s the way the proverbial cookie crumbles: the youngest gets the oldest broom and the oldest pet and the oldest robes. The last boy always gets the least amount of everything -- unless he learns how to fend for himself and take what he needs, and it’s taken Ron a long time to learn this. What he is, is a scrapper.

Ron knows that Malfoy has never fought for anything a day in his life. Not just because of his spoiled upbringing, but because Malfoy is an only child, and Ron knows he never had to fight just to have a place on the bench at dinner. Ron would love it if just once Malfoy had to actually fight for something instead of having it handed to him. Ron would love it if just once Malfoy didn’t get things his way.

The next time Ron finds himself in a corridor alone with Malfoy, there’s actually a split second when he thinks they might be able to actually pass each other by without incident. But then Malfoy calls him The Weasel and Ron has to call him The Ferret, and then they’re tussling on the floor, and Ron can’t figure out why his fingers are in Malfoy’s hair or why Malfoy’s rubbing against him instead of screaming for his goons the way he always does.
It’s not really a kiss; it’s more of a hostile exchange of spit.

There’s a part of Ron that knows he should tell Hermione and Harry about what he’s getting up to with Malfoy in various closets and nooks around the castle, but Ron knows that they would never understand why he’s doing this. Actually, there’s a large part of Ron that doesn’t really understand his justifications either, but he knows it all comes back to fighting for what’s right and for what he believes in. If Ron can, well, weasel his way into Malfoy’s affections then that will be worth their weight in galleons when the war begins, and not every battle has to be fought with brute strength.
He’s doing this for them. He’s doing this so that they have a chance in the end.
Ron’s not a fighter; he’s a survivor. There’s a difference.
