All my opinions are unpopular.

Sugar-free Jell-o is a vicious, filthy lie, because I had some for breakfast, and lemme tell you, there was sugar in there! Anyhoo, I was chatting with
serialkarma this morning and telling her how every time I slag off Harry or Clark I get de-friended by at least three people, which I thought was kind of funny, because you know what? I do think Clark's overrated and I do think that Harry's a snot-nosed annoyance. (That could just be my inner Slytherin talking, but I don't think so). But you know what? Just cos I slag them off doesn't mean I don't think they have their good points, I mean have you, like, looked at SV's Clark? You could put up with a lot of toss to get a semi-regular shag from him. And Harry, well, if somebody's got to die for the cause? Better him than Neville in my book. In other unpopular opinions I'd also like to say that:
- Draco? He doesn't want to be redeemed. People? He's EVOL. He's a Slytherin. He's his father's son. He likes it that way. That's what makes him so great. He can bitch and moan and snark with the best of them. He can still shag Harry Potter and call him a prat. He's a hypocrite. He's going to fight for The Dark Lord and probably lose. Or he just might run away. He's not going to wake up one morning and say 'Oh, I've seen the light. The love of Harry effing Potter has made me a good man.' Really. It's not going to happen. It's why I like him. Draco/Neville is another matter altogether.
- Sark? Not going to have an epiphany either. The Twu Wuv of Sydney is not going change him. Not because he can't change either, but because she hates his guts!
- Writers are not fucking robots. Insisting that we want to write the story *you* want us to write? Not gonna happen unless we've wanted to write it anyway. Thinking that harassing us will help? Wrong. Have you ever seen anybody catch flies with vinegar? Exactly.
- Longer is not always better.
- There are all kinds of role models and heroes. Just because someone's not ordained by a scar or from the wrong side of tracks or sent from another frigging planet doesn't meant that they can't be special too. It doesn't make them unworthy or horrible or a lesser match.
- Kicking other characters to make your character look better? Not really a good thing. I adore Lex; I think Clark's a tosser, but that doesn't mean Lex hasn't done some scandelously wrong things.
- Castrating your character is not going to make him do what you want. Most people don't like being castrated. It fucking hurts!
- ETN: Hermione? Cannot fucking STAND her. She makes me want to pull my eyes out with dull Tweezerman tweezers.
and last, but never ever least:
- Fandom gives you what you put into it. Really. Give it more and it'll give you more, give it less and you'll get less. Nothing is going to fall into your lap.
In other news, when are Christian & Sean going to have sex on Nip/Tuck?

Date: 2004-08-26 10:39 am (UTC)They already did. As far as I'm concerned. Stirring each other's vanilla and having a threesome with a hooker, had to be some touching on the last one.

Date: 2004-08-26 10:42 am (UTC)I also love that Sark is evil. He enjoys being bad. He's not going to wake up and decide to fight for good. He's out for himself first and foremost; if he happens to work with Sydney and the CIA it's simply to further his own gain. I think part of the reason he's so flirtatious with Sydney is because he loves rattling her. He doesn't have a desire to turn her on to the Dark Side. It's just cheap thrills. She's too sanctimonious for his tastes.
I want a gmail invite. plebeian509@hotmail.com, please.

I think you left out an "again" in there, after "sex" and before "on"?

You are right. I know this, but I keep hoping they'll show us more. We need more!

Date: 2004-08-26 01:34 pm (UTC)dude, oh thank god somebody else feels this way. Or, well, the Clark's overrated thing isn't that unpopular, I don't think, because Lex/Michael Rosenbaum is just better as a character/actor. Or, maybe I'm just a rabid fangirl in my thinking of that. I don't know.
But Harry? So. Damn. Annoying. Every one of those books just make me dislike him more and more. He's an ass (arse, actually, since he's British) and no matter how badly the Dursleys treat him, he's still a snot-nosed, self-absorbed spoiled brat. Also? More than slightly unstable and possibly evil (and a terribly unreliable narrator). And, okay, again, maybe he's supposed to be that way, because no teenager is NOT self-involved and no POV is un-skewed.. But still. Dislike that may turn into active hate by the next book.
Neville, at least, has potential. He's doing pretty damn well for himself in OotP already.

Date: 2004-08-26 03:03 pm (UTC)That's part of Neville's appeal - he's the Everyman, and clumsier than some, even. And Draco/Sark/Lex type characters - are their own kind of role model: smart, ruthless, tricky, charismatic. They are fascinating to watch. A bit of evil can be very enticing. If it's pretty. I mean, who really likes Pollyanna anyway? Or Mary Kate and Ashley? Don't you want to smack them? Frankly, the redemption of Sark would be BOOORING. But having these characters have a random moment compassionate choice or action every so often keeps it interesting. I'm not sure about the totally evil pronouncement though - like blackest of black, rejoicing in pain, completely inhumane? I don't see any of these three that way.
I think Harry is annoying but it seems to be deliberatly done. hermione is probably way too close to my own middle-high school persona so I hate to slag her off too much :)
Thanks for the gmail offer - I'd like to take you up on it if you still have an invite left... gypsyjolie at yahoo.com

Date: 2004-08-26 07:21 pm (UTC)And to add some actual content in light of my shameless begging for the gmail invite, I know I just lurk, but one of the reasons I lurk here is because I like read differing opinions about characters. it would be pretty boring if everyone felt the same way about every character. I don't always agree, but it makes me think about it.
I'm also beginning to think I should start watching Nip/Tuck-was there really a recent threesome? Damn.

God, yes. Maybe it's because I have so little time for online stuff the past few weeks, but I've developed a serious impatience for the multi-part story. Sure, I'll give it a chance if the author is a known quantity (a known quantity of goodness, naturally) but I have a deep and abiding love for the pithy one-off. Say it with less. Embrace closure, or just an ending. Leave them wanting more. Don't give them more. You excel at this, which rocks.
If you still have a gmail invite, I'll take one. amyth71 at yahoo dot com. Thanks!
