I don't particularly like Keane. Their pasty-faced singer has an ego problem, which annoys me, and yet, I cannot deny that on occasion they make good tunes. This one inspired me to write for my new favoritest movie, Friday Night Lights, which I expect [livejournal.com profile] nifra_idril to begin pimping at some point this week as well. And even if you haven't watched the film, hey, they're fucking adorable! Seriously.

When the Stars Go Blue

The bright lights from the oil fields are all Brian can see from the driver's seat of his car –- those and the thousands of stars that are spread out across the inky night. The Texas sky is really something when the sun goes down, but Brian's viewing angle is off, and the door handle is digging into his spine. He really wants to move or shift his weight or do something to take the pressure off, between being tackled until he saw double of everything and the door handle, he is seriously starting to ache, and his ass hurts.

It would be really nice to just move, except that Brian's got a 175 lb. quarterback curled against his chest, and Brian doesn't want to disturb him. Considering the way that Winchell -– no, off the field it's just Mike -- is clutching at his tee shirt, Brian's not sure he could move him anyway.

The ends of Mike's hair are still damp from his post-game shower, and Brian wants to move. Maybe turn the radio on or just see if Mike wants to go somewhere or do something.

Anything to fill the hole.

It's not like Brian's trying to make Winchell –- Mike -- talk; he just, it really gets him when Mike's upset. It makes his chest hurt because he can understand the tears and the pain. He knows how bad Mike feels when they lose, how personally he takes it, and Brian can't even begin to imagine how out of control Mike must feel when he cries.

Mike's the strongest guy that Brian knows except for Don, and nobody should have to be as strong as Don is.

Don just...

Brian doesn't want to think about Don right now.

One person at a time, and right now, Brian's focusing on trying to make things better for Mike.

He understands the tears and the pain; Mike tries so hard, for himself and his mom, and the idea that it's just not enough makes Brian's head hurt. He hates to see Mike beating himself up, and his fingers draw soft little patterns behind Mike's ears as Mike sniffs.

Mike's hair is getting longer in the back; not long like Don's, just longer than he normally keeps it, and Brian's fingers slide through the soft brown hairs slowly. He's trying to be comforting, or something, and Mike's sobbing has become softer now. He's almost cried himself out, and Brian figures that Mike must have a knot forming on the back of his head from where he was banging it against the wall, but he can't feel it.

They never talk about it when Mike cries, because it's not as though it's something that happens a lot. Brian's seen Mike's mom yell at him over and over again, and all Mike does is twitch, a lot -- but games are different. It's like Mike thinks he has to be strong for everybody, and Brian keeps telling him that's it's a team thing, but Mike just doesn't listen, and it drives Brian nuts.

"It's not the end of the world," Brian says quietly.

He can feel Mike's body stiffen against his chest, but he keeps stroking Mike's hair.

"I know." Mike's voice is a low Texas drawl that makes the hairs on the nape of Brian's neck stand up. "It just feels like it is."

Brian makes a snorting noise. "Maybe you should feel somethin' else then," he says, and when Mike looks up, he smiles down at him.

It's not the most effortless smile ever, but at least it seems to work, because Mike wipes at his face with the back of his hand and sits up a little bit so Brian can get some feeling in his lower back.

For somebody who's been lying on the gearshift for about thirty minutes, Mike doesn't seem too uncomfortable, which is just messed up to Brian. He feels vindicated when Mike rubs at his side ruefully. "You need a bigger car," Mike says.

"You gonna buy me one, rich boy?"

"I reckon you can buy *me* one when you get done with your fancy education." Mike's smiling around red eyes and messy hair, and there's a part of Brian that just wants to kiss him until Mike's gasping and moaning and writhing against him in the front seat of the car, until there's no football and no team and it's just them -- but he figures that might not be what Mike wants.

The stars are really bright tonight, and he doesn't even realize that Winchell's talking to him until he feels a hand on his leg.

"You wanna do something?" Mike asks.

"Not really," Brian lies, looking away from bright eyes.

Mike makes a face. "Chavo, you're a filthy liar."

"Who're you callin' a –-"

There was something that Brian was gonna say about being called a filthy liar; he look a shower after the game, Mike was there –- but that's not helping him think too clear right now, or that could be because Mike just shoved him against the driver's side door, and his head is ringing.

It's either a concussion or the way that Mike is kissing him, and Brian's not sure, but he kinda hopes it's because of the kissing.

Mike tastes of salt and dirt, and his mouth misses Brian's more than he gets it right. He kisses like a virgin; it's sloppy and desperate and still really hot.

Once again Brian's pinned against the door handle and a deceptively heavy quarterback; the car is just not the place for this, but it's the only kind of freedom they have, and he clutches at Mike's hair as though holding on might be enough to keep them there.

Mike's kisses eventually lose some of their desperation and that's when Brian takes over, holding Mike's head at better angles to lick his way into Mike's mouth; and when Mike humps against his leg, Brian can’t help the smile that curls the corners of his mouth.

The car is definitely not the place for this, and Brian can feel Mike's stubble rubbing against his chin and his jaw. "We're gonna be okay," he says, pulling back a little. "You know that right?"

Mike's eyes are lidded, but he focuses well enough. "Yeah, I know."

"I mean it; *you're* gonna be okay. It won't be like this forever," Brian says. He's not sure if he means the pressure or the loneliness or the fear or the glory or all of it, but he knows it's about football... and them... and the team.

It's about Don and Boobie and the Preacher and Coach. It's about everything, and when Mike nods, Brian can feel the tendons in his neck move under the flat of his hand.

"I know," Mike says.

Brian knows it too.

This isn't forever -- he thinks it's what they're all so afraid of.

-end-

I need FNL icons. Yis. Also, knowing my great disdain for sobbing characters, I feel I should point out that Mike's tears are canon and that this is actually a missing scene from the post-Midland loss. Yis.

Tom Chaplin gives me the urge to punch something. Then of course, I see how he looks ten years old and I get all "I can't hit the little kid!"

Dude, he's just so unattractive it's mind-boggling. Proof of the double-standard that men in music do not have to be hot; a woman couldn't get away with that.

Oh, this is wonderful. I can't really get a handle on Brian from movie!canon, but you've done a great job.

I kept waiting for them to show more Brian in the film, something about his family or where he was from, but there was nothing... except him comforting Mike. Not that I'm complaining or anything.

The book's got a bit more stuff on Brian. Not a whole lot, still, but way more than the movie, where he seems to have sprung fully formed from the soil of Odessa.

Dude. So weird... I just picked up that Keane CD yesterday and I've been listening to it at work and the first couple of spins I thought, "Eh... This is okay". But, the more times I listen to it, the more it seems to grow on me.

Interesting indeed... Hrmmmm...

Yeah - you know, if Nif showed any enthusiasm I might watch it. But, I mean, the way it is now she's so stoic and nonchalant about it.

I don't know. I have to see.

Mad props on the fic, especially since I've never seen the movie and I still enjoyed it. (The fact that they're in a car and it's all uncomfortable made me laugh and shake my head and go, "Oh, [livejournal.com profile] hackthis." hee.)

And thanks for the songs. There's a chance I've been listening on my iPod all day - this is one of my favorite Ryan Adams songs of all time, so I heard that that EVIL FUCKING SHOW was covering it and I went "GRRR MUST KILL." And then I listened and went "...okay. Stay of execution."

You must see this film! See it now! See it now! I know you are just laying about the house anyway! ::hops up and down:: Also, yes, I believe that all Ryan covers are dodgy, I mean The Corrs covered it too (gags), but this one wasn't too bad.

I've never seen the movie, but I've read Friday Night Lights and loved it which I believe it just as good. There is crying and boy-bonding in the book too, damnit! So, yes, those are some gay-ass straight Texan footballers, my friend, and this fic is perfect. Mike! I am in love with it.

I'm so impressed with what you did with Brian in this fic! After watching the movie and reading the book, I like his character, but I don't feel like I really know him. The one thing the movie gave us, which you did a terrific job with, was the way he's the first one to try to take care of his teammates. It reminds me a bit of River Phoenix in Stand By Me, being the peacekeeper and the one to give comfort. I love how you worked that into this fic and fit it in like it could be a missing scene from the movie.

This was my favorite line:

Mike's the strongest guy that Brian knows except for Don, and nobody should have to be as strong as Don is.

Wow. Such a lovely job on this fic. I really enjoyed it.
