I am in sharing mode.
Aqualung 'Brighter than Sunshine' – Everyone seems to be a big fan of his 'Strange and Beautiful (I Put a Spell on You)'. Personally, I cannot fucking stand that song. This one though, this is the one that did it for me, plaintive singing, strong pianos. Even though this song has been tarred by being associated with an Ashton Kutcher film, you can just ignore that.
Blur 'Parklife' – There's not much that hasn't been said about Blur... or Damon Albarn.
ethrosdemon is a big fan of his wannabe-Cockney-hotness, but you can't really fault Blur for anything. At least they experiment. This is the song that made it cool to go to the dogs and drink yourself shitless. Not that you ever needed an excuse before.
Elbow 'Fugitive Motel' (the RJD2 mix) – Posted especially for
circe_tigana who loves the big woolly mammoth-type bloke almost as much as I do, and for
fivil, who has just discovered the brilliance that is Elbow.
Sia 'The Church of What's Happening Now' – This song is for everyone who wanted to know where I got the title for the story. Sia is a vocalist with the group Zero 7. Zero 7*, for those who may not know, are absolutely fucking brilliant. They make ambient electronica/ trip-hop. Think like the natural successor to Portishead and Morcheeba's stuff. If you like that, you'll love them, and by extension, her.
Snow Patrol 'Spitting Games '(acoustic on Irish Radio) – I think we all know how I feel about Snow Patrol. You know, the endless enthusiasm and shrieking might give it away. Long before Final Straw there was The Reindeer Section (Gary Lightbody's solo project) and the first two LP's Songs for Polar Bears and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up. (You guys are starting to see where I get my story titles, yes?). I digress. I <3 SP. I have for a while. This is me paying wee tribute.
Zero 7 'Distractions' – (also see: Sia) Zero 7 first came to my attention about four years ago now when they were being heralded as the new thing to soothe your ears. Six months later it was being referred to as 'the baby making album' for it's smooth, sexual current. And let me tell you. They're not wrong. Use condoms! Just saying...
ETA: I know there is no rap, hip-hop or R&B, but that's because I am preoccupied with the fact that Kanye West pushed back the release date of Late Registration to 16 August. That shit was supposed to be out next week!
