I said to myself today: Self, you should do a gratuitous music post, because today is a nice day, and you prolly won't get to do this for a while. You should share the love and all that other shit, because goddamnit, it's a good day.
So, from me to you.
This Must Be the Place: Music for the People
Aretha Franklin 'Oh, Happy Day' -- It's Aretha. She's singing that it's a happy day. You want something deeper, you're prolly not going to find it, but you know, it's a happy day, dammit!
Alexi Murdoch 'Dream About Flying' -- Singer/songwriter/voice like hot breath on the back of your neck alert. No, not the scary stalker breathing, more like that really hot guy/girl whispering dirty things in your ear when you're supposed to be focusing on something -- anything -- else. Yeah, that's about it. Alexi's big song is 'Orange Sky' which has been featured on quite a few telly shows that I can't recall right now.
Black-Eyes Peas f/ Macy Gray 'Request Line' -- Many many moons ago, before the Peas signed that ex-meth head that Blender keeps running the "I peed on myself' photo of, they made music like this. I liked the Peas back then, not so much now. Can you tell? I do love Blender though, Blender is hysterical.
Doves 'Here it Comes' -- I love Doves. No, wait, I lurve Doves. Also, it's just Doves, not The Doves, and hey, even when I'm not thrilled with what they're putting out, they're still pretty fucking fantastic. This is off their first LP, and if you're not sure who they are, they're the fine boys that brought you 'There Goes the Fear' and 'Caught by the River'.
Jeff Buckley 'If You Knew' -- Jeff has been dead almost ten years. In fact it will be ten years next May. In his lifetime he released one full LP and one EP (Live at Sin'e), and yet, I keep discovering songs by him that I didn't know existed. It's like 2Pac. Except, you know, not, because 2Pac and Elvis are living in Vegas. But not together. At least I don't think they're living together. I could be wrong.
Joe Cocker 'A Little Help from my Friends' (cover) -- I think pretty much everyone and their grandparents knows how this song goes, who sang it, when, on what album, etcetera etcetera. To me, this song is about celebrating that, if you're lucky, you have friends who see you through the rough patches in your life. Or as I like to say You don't have to be loved by everyone, but it helps to be loved by someone. I chose Joe's version because it was the theme for The Wonder Years. I loved The Wonder Years.
Johnny Cash 'Daddy Sang Bass' -- Here is my obligatory Johnny Cash. Why? Because it's Johnny Cash! The fuck, people?
Joshua Scott Jones 'Clang' (acoustic) -- Oooh! Oooh! Oooh! Here's someone really new. He's so new in fact that there's only one song available; the person who gave it to me knows I want more NOW. The quality is sketchy, but when you have talent, recording quality isn't really that important until you have someone paying for your studio time.
Orson 'Bright Idea' -- Orson are a Southern California band. If you try to buy their CD in Southern California, however, it will cost about $25, because it has to be imported from the UK. Yes, they're very big in the UK right now. I adore this song for the chorus Here's my bright idea, I'll just disappear.
Psapp 'Tiger, My Friend' -- Psapp's 'Cosy in the Rocket' is the theme song for the Grey's Anatomy credits -- this isn't that song. This song is similar to that song, though, so if you’re into that sort of downtempo, I'm just chillin' with a drink under the umbrella -- or I wish I was, this is for you.
Radiohead 'Bodysnatchers' (live) -- [insert lots of rambling fangirl noises about the brilliance that is Radiohead]. 'Bodysnatchers' is part of the new material Thom & Co have been testing out on their recent tour. I heart Radiohead. That is all.
Rare Earth 'I Just Want to Celebrate' -- A song not so much like the others you might say, so why is it here? Because it's been featured on this season of Entourage. Oh, you want it now, don't you? Yeah, thought so, bitches. Ari loves you!
Richard Ashcroft 'Money to Burn' -- I talk about Mad Dickie sometimes. About how he used to be the lead singer for this little band called The Verve. Maybe you recall me talking about them from time to time. Maybe you recall me having many a wobbler over the space captain breaking upwith his OTP, Nick the band because of his ego. Men, I tell you, [insert shaking of head here]. IMO, Richard is not nearly as good alone as he is with Nick (and Simon, and Si, and Pete), but this song makes me think of happier (read:Verve) days even if it's post-fallout.
Schoolhouse Rocks 'Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla' -- My favorite Schoolhouse Rocks song ever next to 'Three is a Magic Number,' this song is just guaranteed to make you smile, and hey, you may even learn something about pronouns.
Snow Patrol 'Post-Punk Progression' (cover) -- Gary and Co covering someone. I dunno who. I could prolly find out, but I'm just not that interested in that, what I'm interested in is Gary singing, "Won't be around forever girl, you've gotta grab life with both hands' because ultimately that is the sentiment that's important. You won't be around forever, girl, you've gotta grab life with both hands.

ETA: Seal 'My Vision' -- This just came on my rotation and I decided it had to be added right now, because I really do think Seal has a lovely voice, and there's something really self-affirming and 'let me spin in my chair and be happy' about this song.
So, from me to you.

Date: 2006-07-12 07:01 pm (UTC)Man, does time fly. I remember reading about his drowning in the morning paper and my knees buckling.
//Orson are a Southern California band... Yes, they're very big in the UK right now.//
They were just talking about that on a local LA radiostation, and I was shocked. The first time I saw them it was on a local access TV show. Good for them.

They are huge in the UK. They're are high rotation on Virgin, as in like every two hours on the hour.

Date: 2006-07-12 07:39 pm (UTC)I take very possibility I get to get to know new music. Which is why when I went to the public library to get a good Latin dictionary, I came out with a couple of new CDs as well. I ♥ public libraries!
