It's Friday. I am ready to have a drink or six. While I wait for my toy boy to bring me a drink, I present the September Frankenstein Mix, brought to you by [livejournal.com profile] calikali

The Blow Me Mix

1. A holiday song -- Cobra Starship 'Snakes on a Plane (Bring it)!' –- Despite whatever Hollywood may say, the premiere of Snakes on a Plane was a big success for everyone on the intarwebs who told someone else about it, visited the SoaP website or went on opening weekend to see the film. It may not be a traditional holiday, but considering that bloggers, netizens and every hack out there did the marketing for this movie, I'd say that merits a holiday mention.

2. A spring song Corinne Bailey Rae 'Put Your Records On' –- About four months ago (?) maybe six I said that Corinne was going to be the next big thing, but I was on the fence about her music. The fact of the matter is that I'm not off the fence over her, but I am over the fucking moon about this song. A song about supporting the one you love, even when you can admit that it's not always easy. The acoustic version is better, but I don't have it with me at the moment.

3. A sleeping song -- Jeff Buckley 'Dream Brother' –- Oh, c'mon y'all know the drill -- Jeff, Johnny, Gary, Al or Guy. Or Fiona. I haven't recommended a Jeff song in like a month or something. We are SO past due, and this is easily the song for it. There is a child sleeping with his twin/ pictures go wild in a rush of wind/ that dark angel he's shuffling in/ watching over them with his black feather wings unfurled…

4. A sugared song -- Ben Lee 'Household Name' –- Oh Ben when did you start being so clever? A song about all the washed up child stars of the 80s and why you should never ever ever let your child go into showbizness? Stop it! You're totally becoming endearing.

5. A fierce song -- Lily Allen 'Knock'em Out' –- That I'm putting this song here is proof that every song should be listened to at least twice, because when I first heard Lily's stuff early this year I wasn't impressed. And then I was listening to Virgin three weeks ago and one of her songs was on where she was tearing her ex a new one and I said, ROCK!

6. A mysterious song -- Massive Attack 'Teardrop' –- For the love of god, people, this is not just the House theme, this is one of the most beautiful songs of the 90s brought to you by Liz Fraser and Bristol's finest.

7. A yearning song -- Joe Purdy 'Mary May & Bobby' -- I first discovered Joe Purdy about two years ago. He didn't have a proper album, all you could get were mp3s, like 'Day Past a Child' which he doesn't even sing live anymore. And the thing was that I liked his stuff, but it wasn't grabbing me at the time, and then late last year [livejournal.com profile] ethrosdemon discovered him properly and sent me his entire catalogue and there was this song about your first love and what you never really get over. I love this song.

8. A satisfied song -- Pink 'Stupid Girls' -- Pink has a special place in my heart for her uncompromising vision, i.e. her glee at telling everybody to go fuck themselves. This song is about those anorexic wax figures that are ruining the minds of today's impressionable girls. Paris Hilton is not a role model damnit! She should be put out the fucking airlock!

9. A mourning song -- Radiohead 'Fake Plastic Trees' –- The quintessential Radiohead sing along song. Far better IMO than Creep, and not just because it's from my favorite Radiohead LP, but because when Thom laments if only he could be who you wanted, you feel his pain. I <3 Thom.

10. A kind song -- M Ward 'Right in the Head' -– Do not confuse M Ward with The Real Tuesday Weld or M People or any of that business. This is a song about wishing the best for your siblings, but mostly that they don't end up like you.

11. A pure song -- Dolly Parton '9 to 5' –- This is a pure song. A song about the pure rage of being forced to slave for The Man to scrape a decent living. I swear sometimes that man is out to get me too, Dolly!

12. A bitter song -- Regina Spektor 'Ode to Divorce' -- I think the title says it all for this one, but when Regina sings that "I don't need your money, I need your car and your love" you know exactly what she means.

I love Mary May and Bobby--even though it's a sappy love song, that's how good he is!

I was just talking to some idiot singer-songwriter today about Joe and his career. I wish people would fucking listen to me.

You wish people would listen to you, huh? Okay, Danny.

I love Mary May and Bobby--even though it's a sappy love song, that's how good he is!

I never listened to it properly until like a month ago and then I was all 'Oh, Joe' about it.

Now that is one awesome mix. Jeff!! I love that song, I really do. And The Bends is quality vintage Radiohead, every last song, seriously. Thanks.

Also, do you have the Elbow and Jose Gonzalez covers of Teardrop? If not, I would be more than happy to upload.

I've heard Jose's version live, but I don't have it on mp3 and would love a copy. I used to have Guy's version too, but it's not their best cover work and I'm a little 'meh' about it. However I believe [livejournal.com profile] qe2 is very interested in both.

My LJ is always open for music discussion and conversation. I live to encourage music conversation, mostly so I can barge in like a bull and demand exposure to new things, old things, borrowed things, blue things. Music is the best husband ever. :D

My favorite part about the MTV music awards was Nick Lachey and Nicole Richie having to give an award to Pink. How hilarious. You have to honor someone who mocks the hell out of you. hee.

That *is* pretty amusing.

GREAT MUSIC POST! As soon as I get my new 'puter and DSL connection, I'm going to try to take a page out of your book and do some music-theme posts.
