Better Living Through Learning: Dean Thomas
thanks to
ethrosdemon for the beta.
Dean doesn’t understand how Ron can take the piss out of West Ham colours when his beloved Chudley Cannons race around like a bunch of oranges with toothpicks sticking out of them.
Really, Dean just doesn’t get it at all. Of course, he likes Quidditch. How could he not? He likes watching his mates play and he likes how Seamus gets all excited and generally loses his voice before the match even begins. Dean really likes that part because it makes him laugh, but Quidditch is still relatively new to him and it just doesn’t have the same history that football does.
Football is well, football.
It’s footie, and it’s a holy thing, and okay, so the ball never leaves the ground for very long, but it’s still entertaining. There are hat tricks and red cards and celebrations and at least in footie everybody has a chance at the glory. Not that Harry’s not great, but in footie there are two forwards, and there are halfbacks and defenders and anybody can score.
Not just anyone can catch the Snitch. It’s just odd, and Dean can’t imagine trying to explain how Quidditch works to his Uncle Otis.
Uncle Otis who paints his face blue and claret for his beloved West Ham.
Uncle Otis who’s been eating the same ritualistic meal of beans and rice and curried goat before he steps foot out the door to go to the match since time began. Dean's uncle won't even go to the pub to even watch the match without his prerequisite jerked chicked. Jamaican food and footie are synonymous in Dean's mind.
Dean bets that Ron’s beloved Cannons don’t inspire that sort of devotion, or well, perhaps they do because Ron has a lot of orange shirts. But none of Ron’s Cannon’s were on the 1966 World Cup squad, and that’s something every West Ham fan can be proud of, even if their World Cup hasn’t been around since the 15th century like some sports. That’s something that Dean is proud of even if he’s only heard about the match from Uncle Otis fifty times; it’s still worth repeating.
It’s still worth knowing.
Just like football is worth knowing about even if it’s not necessarily a wizarding preference. Just because Quidditch is magical doesn’t make it better, and just because football is for Muggles doesn’t make it wrong.
Dean doesn’t care what Malfoy says. He doesn’t care that he’s Muggle-born or that his poster doesn’t move no matter how many charms Ron tries to throw at it. He’s proud that his Uncle Otis came from Savanna-La-Mar to try out for the West Ham reserves, and he’s even prouder that he is who he is. Dean draws and he likes Quidditch, but that doesn’t mean he can’t like other stuff as well.

Date: 2002-09-16 09:33 am (UTC)Yay for Dean, although, boo for West Ham. I must confess to supporting my town's team, even if we are nowhere near the premier league (in fact I don't think we're in any league at all, so shite are we).
I like this fic just because there are so few pieces of writing that actually look at Muggle things - even though they're obviously just as important. I imagine it's quite confusing to be half Muggle half magic and not be able to choose either. But as long as there's football, it'll be alright. :) I think you captured the British obsession quite nicely there - although it gets an awful lot worse during the World Cup and Euro-whatever-year. *g*

Date: 2002-09-16 10:43 am (UTC)the selfridges advert said it best ' 90% of all men are married to 11 players.' i just had a moment, is is just me or does michael remind you of oliver wood?
Re: oh, no doubt.
Date: 2002-09-16 10:50 am (UTC)Another acotr who looks like I imagine Sean Biggerstaff might when he's older is Joseph McFadden (http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Close_Up/Players/1999/04/28/joseph_mcfadden.jpg). Right down to the Scottish accent and everything. Somewhere in one of my folders I have slashed him ruthlessly with some bloke whose name I forget. Yum yum yum. Oliver Wood is the source of so much goodness.

Date: 2002-09-16 12:10 pm (UTC)But this! This was very interesting. Well-told gen, gives a nice look at the character. That last sentence really draws it all together, and I may or may not have mentally added "...like Seamus Finnigan" to the end. But that's just me.
Lovely as usual, my dear.
