Like some of my battle-scarred fellows, I've been around fandom for a few years now. Not as many as some, not as few as others, but long enough to have respectable amount of fandom activity under my belt.

I'm already at the point where I find a good amount of the contents of any major bookstore lacking in character development, plot and good old-fashioned entertainment because fandom has spoiled me. (Thanks guys!) And yet, every now and then a story comes across my path that so far surpasses my (rather high) expectations of what fandom writers can do that I'm just sort of left with my jaw hanging.

I can think of three, maybe four, times in my fandom experience where I've read a story and been so floored, so jealous, so filled with all consuming awe that I really consider tossing the towel in and going off to study turtles in the Galapagos like I should've years ago.

Today, [livejournal.com profile] samdonne posted The Kids Aren't All Right, which on the surface is a multi-media Iron Man project that takes the form of a Vanity Fair article. When you look deeper, however, you can see the layers of time and effort and energy and sheer learning that such a piece takes and it's really and truly mind-blowing.

I cannot recommend this... experience enough. I don't care if you don't read Iron Man fic. I don't even care if you've never even seen the film (INFIDEL!). This will transcend all of that. Read it. You can thank me later.

Holy shit, multimedia fics are the BEST. This might sound stupid but I once read popslash in which Justin Timberlake was a cult leader/murderer (I know, awesome) and it was presented in form of police evidence. So fucking awesome, and I don't even like popslash that much.

DOOD! I read that one too! That was my very first intro to multimedia fics, and what an experience. To this day I find him kind of suspect because he does seem to have that cult thing going (and I didn't like popslash at *all*, but I had to know what everyone was talking about).

I was so disappointed when Justin's second album wasn't all "spoken word poetry with cutting edge beats".

You shouting at me?

*sulks*

No, I still haven't seen it! And it seems to have dropped off the cinema screens so I may have to wait even longer. But I have tabbed the story because I trust your judgement [HAHAHAHA] and will check it out. :)

Not you in particular, but if you are feeling guilt because you told me six thousand years ago you were going to see it and you didn't... you know...

I am looking forward to reading this tomorrow. Man, I love stories that just fuck your shit up cuz the whole package is just so damn good. A little while back you'd asked for books to recommend and I'd said Hawks and Hands (http://dira.ficlaundering.com/ds/hockey/hh.html) by [livejournal.com profile] dsudis, cuz it's damn amazing. And then I got distracted by your cookie poll and forgot to mention what it was about. It's an AU Due South RayK/Fraser hockey fic. I don't care if people think hockey needs to be burned and thrown off a cliff (heathens), everyone should read it. I waxed the poetic about it on my journal already a little while back.

I haven't seen all of Due South and sometimes I'll catch an episode and think "When did I see this already?" only to realize that I'd read that particular exchange in her fic. She so effortlessly melds her world and canon together, it's beautiful. I kind of hope you haven't already read it so you can go do it now. Be warned, it is long. If you have read it, I hope you liked it. :O)

I have read it, many moons ago when it came out I was in dS fandom, and yes, it is as good as you rave. I'd never seen the fascination of hockey, but that definitely made me think there might be something to it :-)
