It’s Not About That
Pairing: Marcus/Oliver
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] oneko_briar’s ‘End of Summer’ Challenge.
Summary: Whatever you think this is about, chances are it’s not.

+++

Sand, girls and sun are all very well for other people, but Marcus is bored shitless. Things like this just don’t appeal to him, but if the news ever got out he’d be laughed out of the common room – not that anyone would be stupid enough to laugh at Marcus Flint, but they’d be doing it inside and that’s just not on at all.

Marcus has a reputation to uphold – for the most part.

All the same, it’s too bright out for Quidditch, too early for the pub and Marcus has never tanned well. He’s not one for sunbathing, and he’s already gone for a swim this morning, so he pulls his shirt on and gathers his book – Understanding the Properties of Transfiguration - and towel before leaving the bathing area.

It’s too bleeding hot. Marcus is English, and too much good weather is worrisome; besides, he has his mum’s skin, and he’ll probably end up with freckles everywhere. Marcus hates his freckles like he hates the glaring sun. He randomly wonders if Wood has freckles as seeks shelter in the cantina.

+++

Marcus has a souvenir from every place that he’s ever visited, but only his mum knows about that because she’s the one who started it all. She’s the one who brought him back a picture card of a moving snowman when she returned from visiting her sister in Reykjavik when he was six. Marcus was so obsessed that she took him back to Iceland with her the following year.

Marcus likes to travel. He likes a lot of things.

He has a stuffed walrus from Iceland that flaps its tail, and a miniature of Wronksi from the World Cup in Turkey. He has a set of Multiplying Marbles from Holland and a self-demolishing wall from Berlin. There are postcards and photographs from Quidditch camp in Austria and holidays in Positano. Marcus has been to Thailand and Hawaii and he hopes to go back to Tokyo one day.

When he was eight, his family went to America on holiday and it was just a bit too much, even for Marcus. Of course that’s what Marcus’ dad makes a point of saying about the Americans – they have a bit too much of everything. Too many shops, too much food, too many kinds of robes and brooms and about fifteen different kinds of salamander eggs.

Marcus always thought one blob of salamander eggs was as good as the others but apparently it’s all about the species and their habitat and all those other sorts of things that Marcus isn’t interested in. Just because he’s a Slytherin doesn’t mean he prefers Potions. Actually, Marcus’s best subject is Transfiguration, something that he likes to keep a secret from pretty much everyone save Professor McGonagall.

She often says she can’t understand how he’s able to turn a ball of cotton wool into a rabbit and then go and put Angelina in the infirmary, but one has nothing to do with the other.

Quidditch isn’t personal – unless it has to do with Oliver.

+++

Marcus spends the last week of summer holiday in Majorca as a present from his father for being made captain of the Quidditch team. The trip should probably go to Wood instead as he’s the only reason that Marcus has tried as hard as he does. Not that Marcus would mind going on holiday with Wood, but that’s not really something he tries to think about, and besides it’s not as though Marcus’ father knows about Oliver.

He’d probably be more upset about the Gryffindor part of the boy in question, but point in fact, Marcus didn’t actually want to go to Spain. He wanted to go up north, maybe to the Highlands or to Perth. Lucas McKinney lives up there, and even though he’s been out of school a year now, he and Marcus still owl occasionally. Marcus could have a perfectly legitimate reason to be in Scotland, but his father wouldn’t see it that way, so now he’s in Spain.

It’s not as though Marcus couldn’t go up to Scotland whenever he wants, if he had a reason, and as far as foreign countries go Spain’s not bad. It’s got brilliant drinking and clubs and a wizard could do far worse. It’s very brown, very blue. It’s like Oliver’s face after Marcus has had too much butterbeer and isn’t supposed to be trawling around near the Gryffindor tower.

+++

Marcus’ isn’t as hard as he looks, but only his mum knows that. She smiles at him whilst his father rambles on about grades and responsibilities and being a Slytherin. His mum went to Beaubaxtons; his father is an eighth-generation Slytherin. He’s expecting his grandson to be a tenth-generation Slytherin. Marcus doesn’t think he should tell his dad that there isn’t going to be a tenth-generation *anything*.

Marcus knows he’s supposed to have a sense of loyalty and family preservation and all that other bollocks, but his mother has never cared about that. She’s never forced him to care about it either. She says life isn’t about that, she says it’s about traveling and freedom and doing whatever he wants to do.

Marcus’ dad says his mum’s a bit of a hippy. She says it’s because she’s from London and his father is from Dorset. Marcus can’t imagine his mother ever being a girl, but maybe she would look like his sister who lives in Greece. Marcus has been raised to want to leave; it’s the only way of life he knows. He’s been taught to want better things and a better life and to try harder than the next man over. Marcus has been taught to fight dirty and play hard and win at all costs. He’s also been taught to take chances and jump when other people say not to, and he thinks that explains his relationship with Oliver Wood down to a tee.

Just because other people say not to, it’s never changed his determination to make Oliver his. What Marcus wants, Marcus gets, and this year will be his year. This will be the year that he makes Oliver Wood his, not because they’re rivals and enemies and competitors, but because Oliver is like him and they complement each other and he thinks Oliver would like to go to Tokyo some time.

It’s not about families and responsibilities, it’s about being young and maybe being in love and playing Quidditch and knowing that if something doesn’t change this year then it never will. It’s definitely about that.

Ah.
Why do you have no comments for this?
You built this guy from the ground up here. I know you've been toying with him for a while, but damn! I love the traveling, the details on the souvenirs. The facts about his family. Oh, I love that kind of thing, and you give it to me in spades.

I love this so much. Make more. Pic someone else. I want to know all about some random Ravenclaw like this. I mean, what do they think about all the Gryffindor and Slytherin natterings?

Adrian Pucey is a Chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team.
And of course, Terence Higgs was the Seeker that Malfoy replaced (Or possibly, he graduated?)

Oh My Goddess, how scary is it that I know that? This is your fandom and look how much of a geek I already am!

i'm really trying to think of something intelligent to say here, but nothing is coming...

i really enjoyed this, marcus is one of my favorite characters and i absolutely *hate* it when people make him just another troll-like slytherin with a penchant for violence and no brain.

i love your characterization of him, the little quirks, the bits about wood. i'd love to read about them in tokyo together... but that could just be because i'm a romantic. :)

and while i'm here i guess i should tell you that i just finished reading your 'a year in the life of lex' one and i really enjoyed that. you have such a way with words, you can bring emotion out of the reader so easily it's amazing. i'm very glad you were my introduction to sv fanfic.

i would be honored to take credit for coming up with this new and idealistic view of marcus, but the truth of the matter is that i owe it all to [livejournal.com profile] impudent_rabbit as she's a firm marcus supporter. when i started writing the m/o pairing i did it strictly from the oliver pov, making marcus, well, not troll-like but certainly a bit dense, but then rabbit smacked me around a bit and showed me that we know nothing about marcus but what we make - so i made this.

i'm glad you liked it! oh, and i'm glad you liked the lex story as well.

Interesting character piece. Quite well said, all of it. I really liked the bits describing where he'd been- the language was very effective. It flows quite well.

The ending, too, is great. It's the perfect conclusion, just a statement of fact. Nicely done.

this makes me so happy because it is hopeful and Marcus just keeps plugging at things and Oliver will be his, and they'll like Tokyo, a lot.
