So, now people are stealing Obama signs out of front yards. Sign stealing. Sign stealing? Do you think that stealing a sign is going to stop somebody from supporting Obama? Do you think it will stop them from telling other people that they support Obama? Or that a sign is negatively or positively influencing that one indecisive git who can't seem to make a decision after TWO YEARS? Clearly if I can't decide on my own brain power, if Joanne Six Pack has a sign in her yard, I'll vote like her because we're cool and I'm so easily influenced.

But, back to the sing stealing, because I guarantee that if you take two signs, ten more will pop up. Like rabbits that way. There'll probably be stickers too next time, because now you pissed somebody off. And you know what else? When they bought that stuff that you stole, it was probably part of a donation to the Obama/Biden campaign, so really, now they they've had to buy more, on your behalf, so really *you* just donated to the campaign.

So, thanks.

And Vote Obama in 2008.

1) Someone in our subdivision hung their Obama sign in a tree. Don't know if that was to be creative, or to offput snatchers, but whatever. As long as people don't get in accidents or whiplash while looking at it, all good!

I was on this walk the other day and these people had this 10 foot tall banner, rigged up, with real support poles in their front yard of the Shepard Fairey artwork. I tell you I wanted to run into their front yard and hug the banner.

I cannot figure out the rules for Road Bowling to save my life, I figure they are flexible depending on how much you've had to drink.

Give your friend a cookie and gold star. And if you want to scrawl "Terrorist Fuck" on something, how about you start with McCain's forehead? You know, since all the fearmongering his campaign is riling up is inciting all kinds of terror and terrorism right in this country. Robo calls anyone?

This is some of the sorest losing I've ever seen in a democratic political campaign. I'm sure McCain is hating himself a lot when he goes to sleep now.

I know there are people who don't give a shit about this campaign. I know there are people whose lives aren't going to be affected one way or the other. Only 30-odd% of Americans vote in any given election, but I've always felt that if you don't vote you have no fucking right to complain. So if 80% of the country doesn't like where we're going, where the hell are those other 50% who need to say something?

To me, this election is probably the most important one that will take place in my life time. And I think, if you don't vote at this time in this country that that is giving the finger to your country. Being a "Real American" has nothing to do with where you live or if you own a gun or if you only eat meat or if you buy Joe Six Pack a beer. If you believe in something then you should be willing to stand for it. And me? Well, I care that we have no money. I care that we are in a depression when the media keep talking about how we "might" be in a recession. I care that that there will be no social programs for my parents or my children. I care that US schools are the fucking WORST of all the first-world countries and that we're in Vietnam mark II and that McCain was fucking 894 out 899 students in his class and crashed four planes and not once was disciplined because that would be tolerated of anybody else. I care that he has a bad temper and will send MORE of our young people off to die. I care that he wants to overturn Roe v Wade, and that his Vice President is a fucking moron. I care that abstinence only education doesn't fucking WORK and that this guy who is more than willing to go through the younger generation like they're tissues won't even sign an improved GI Bill.

These are the things that make me pro-Obama. It's not a black thing. It's not a democrat thing. It is a desire for real change that not only makes me pro-Obama, but anti-McCain. So, if that, and living in a big city makes me a fake American, well then, fuck it, I hear your country is real nice. ;)

Have you read this article by the way (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain). VERY enlightening.

Wonderful. You really nailed it here. I was talking to two friends the other day, both in their 50s who had never voted. I was really shocked - both have strong political views. Both are unhappy about the economy. Both are following the election and neither are voting and it is too late to register in Ohio. What the hell?

I don't think that anyone's unaffected by this election. I can't think of anyone outside of the US who doesn't want Obama to win-- or at least, isn't really, really scared about what would happen if McCain was elected. Bloody hell, Boris bloody Johnson -Conservative, upper-class, Tory as they come Mayor of London- still supports Obama over McCain because the rest of the world is (appropriately!) terrified of what would happen if McCain got in to power.

Even people that disagree on fundamental idealogical terms with Obama still want him elected because they think he can do the job and would be good for the international arena, if only by keeping America from imploding and not, you know, distablizing the rest of the world. McCain/Palin? Terrifying to think of.

The sad thing is, the other day I saw some comments on a blog that I was reading indicating that people supporting McCain have had their signs stomped, crumpled, defaced, all that sort of thing. I hate that people who support Obama are doing the same thing :(

I love going for my run and seeing all the Obama signs. I've seen a couple McCain bumperstickers too, everybody has the right to endorse who they like, just don't mess with somebody else's choice. And that goes for a lot of things.

They were talking about sign-stealing on the left-wing morning talk show I listen to. One guy called in and said, "My sign got stolen, but I'm just going to go out and give Obama more money by buying a new sign."

Which, I think, is a terrific silver lining to immature behavior.

But then, I've continually said during this campaign that even if I agreed with McCain on every issue (I don't), I still wouldn't vote for him because he's acting like such a baby. Wasn't he a respectable politician just a couple years ago? What the hell happened?

I've been involved in 2 campaigns prior to this one - Kerry '04 and Lamont '06 and sign-stealing is pretty much par for the course. Petty and annoying, yes. Surprising? Not so much.

Conventional wisdom is that lawn signs are a waste of money -- by which I mean, that campaigns THEMSELVES don't think of lawn signs as terribly valuable. If someone wants a lawn sign, you give them one (if you have them) but the voter contact is the important thing. Primarily, it's an opportunity to "up-sell" the voter to something else: a donation of time or money.

No, what's more worrying this campaign season is that some of the petty vandalism that's to be expected as it draws closer to election day is getting nastier. It's not graffiti or eggs. Tires are being slashed, bricks thrown through windshields of cars with Obama stickers, etc.

This isn't to say that people aren't upset and irritated especially when campaign items can be very difficult to get one's hands on (I'm still waiting on two Obama T-shirts I ordered more than a month ago) and in this case, they're going to be collector's items...

Go Obama!

They can be a little tardy with stuff sometimes, I waited about six weeks for a bumpersticker (okay, another one) earlier this year.

It is all fail. When working on the Lamont campaign, an older woman who lived alone opened her door one morning to discover that someone had taken her Lamont signs, doused them with ketchup, and shoved them between her storm door and her front door.

Freaked her the fuck out. And then, of course, there's this year's charming star, Ashley Todd.

People suck.

You know, I have to admit that when the house on the corner put up SEVEN McCain-Palin signs (idk, maybe one for every person in the house?) I was tempted to steal them away in the darkness of night. I don't know why. Spite, maybe? But then I decided that it was contrary to the very spirit of voting so I had to make my peace with them.

There's one on a lawn just down the street, and another popped up. What I want to do is staple something to the sign. Basically, another sign that says: Are you kidding me? Are you fucking KIDDING me?

No no! They're stealing the Obama signs because they secretly want them for themselves! You drive past that house with the 25 Obama signs in the yard, THAT's the set of neighbours you ought to be watching... :D

(I may be deluded - I am Canadian - but I really like the mental image of a split-level with 25 Obama signs out front. Lawn? What lawn? THIS IS AD SPACE.)

My mom was (and still is) big on politics and getting involved. During the time of the Chicago machine where it was Daley Sr. who was mayor for years upon years (when the motto was something about "voting is so nice, try it twice") she was campaigning for a democratic rival. As she went down the street putting up signs for her candidate...a Daley guy was following her and tearing them down.

Didn't stop mom. She yelled at him and kept putting up signs, hoping he'd tire.

Sign stealing is a loooong tradition. An irritating one.

So...yes, as two signs disappear ten will appear. Heh.

In Canada, during our federal elections, people with Liberal signs on their front lawn were getting their brakes cut. Someone could've died because they chose to show their political beliefs.

I totally agree with you when you said that McCain's campaign is encouraging people to be terrorists, because stealing signs, throwing bricks at cars, graffiti, all that - is fear mongering. Is terrorism.
