Although I've never actually got my head around the concept of 'mid-season replacement' because, as you well know, we don't do that this side of the pond!

Yes, because your lot make show, writes it to have a beginning and an ending and then air it. American TV... has a lot of issues. Shows should not go on forever. Most them need to be taken out and shot by the end of the third season.
