So, I think I fucked up the other day. I was cleaning old programs off my computer, like you do, and there was this scroll program that I couldn't identify... so I uninstalled.

Only problem is now my computer's gone apeshit and all the scrolling is terrible as is the cursor and they just jump around on every page regardless of if I'm in IE or Mozilla. Uh, anybody know what I did and can tell me what I have to reinstall to make it stop?

I would be most grateful for the help.

Thanks.

(I have Windows XP on a laptop, just so you know this isn't a Mac issue).

ALL IS FIXED. I THINK. I'VE BEEN OUT DRINKING AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT UNTIL TOMORROW.

I was going to help...and then I saw the thing about Windows.

Um. I can send hopeful thoughts your way. ♥

I have no idea how to help you. But I am endlessly amused by Encino Man being your mood icon for this. *giggles*

I know. I am sorry. But your irritation at my unhelpfulness has probably distracted you from your other problem. So I am actually being of use. *beams*

Do you have your XP installer CD? Or access to one? That should have all the base programs that came with the computer, and if I'm remembering correctly, the CD should give you the option to "repair" instead of "reinstall".

*crosses fingers for you*

Believe me, I know the feeling. I bought my laptop from HP with the option to burn a copy of Vista from what's already installed on the laptop. I've had the laptop for a year and a half and still haven't done it. I feel like I'm treading on thin ice.

I hope your driver search is not in vain! In lieu of said search, I give you Brad and Matt outing George at Venice via Letterman (http://crediniaeth.livejournal.com/431703.html) if you haven't seen it already. :)

It's likely you uninstalled a driver for your mouse/touchpad (laptop or desktop, btw?), and you will probably need to do one of two things. The simplest would be to find any discs (HAHAHA I TYPED DICKS, THAT'S AWESOME) that came with your computer (this is especially easy if you have a laptop) and one of them will have that driver on there; just reinstall it. If you don't have the disc (STILL TYPED DICK. WOW.) then you'll have to try and find it online. Which is often a boring and difficult process if you don't know exactly what you're looking for.

Good luck, let me know if you figure anything out!

You and the dicks I think you have something on your mind. I was telling the person above that I have no flipping idea where this discs are and yes, I am currently undergoing the boring and difficult process and I don't have THE FUCKING TIME TO DEAL WITH THIS RIGHT NOW.

If it's a driver problem, there's a program you can download that will tell you what drivers are fucked up without needing any of the discs. I'll look for it. Hold on.

I think I am downloading that now, it's call Driver Detector yis?

ETA: I fucked up, dude, I do not have TIME to be fucking up right now.

Yep. That should be it. I can't remember if you have to pay for it to give you useful information, but I don't think so. I used it to fix a problem with my USB drivers before.

Sounds like Sparky77 may have you under control here, but as a HelpDesk manager, I'm unable to resist the siren call of "Oh, shit, you guys, I think I borked it." :D

Another option, if it's a name brand computer (especially a Dell) is that you can get the drivers that came with it online pretty easily. If you want, you can give me the make and model (and if it's a Dell, the ESC--um, E?? Service Code, a 7 digit numeral/letter dealie on the box [ETA: by 'box' I mean the computer, not the box you got it in] somewhere). I can find your drivers for you, more than likely.

Any help you could give me would be most appreciated. I downloaded the program S77 suggested, which worked perfectly... except for the part where it wants $30 to fix my driver issues. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook.

I'm on it--when I go to HP's site, I have three options for the V2000--V2000, V2000T or V2000Z. Can you confirm it's just the 2000, or is it one of the others?

ETA: Also, does the name Synaptic ring any bells, for the thing you uninstalled? That's the name for the touchpad driver, which does have a scroll function built into its name.

Me again. It looks like the touchpad driver is the same across the three V2000 models, so: Here's the file, up on my DropBox page: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1933528/sp32647.exe

I totally trust me, but if I were you, I'd virus scan that just to be safe. :D Sort of like always wearing a condom. Anyway, if you run that, it will come up and say it's the Synaptics Touchpad driver. The directions just say to run it, and do what it tells you on-screen, so it should be pretty straightforward.

Or you can just get it from HP's page for your laptop, which is here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=500508&lang=en

I grabbed the latest Synaptics driver from that page. It wouldn't hurt to save that link--on the other hand, HP/Compaq redoes their site organization not infrequently, so who knows how long that search link will be good.

S77 walked me through something which I think just worked, but I'm supposed to go out drinking right now so I can't really test it, but thank you so very very much for your help with this. If what she had me do (reinstall the mouse via the control panel) doesn't work I will definitely do this. And again, THANK YOU.

:D Drinking is always better than futzing around with computers, seriously. And any solution that works is all good, so you are welcome!!
