After some discussion [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 and I have decided we're vetoing this month. (Did I not tell you, Q? Executive decision, baby!)

So, while we await the changing of the tide/moon/karma and the proliferation of male!skating!slash (don't front I know y'all are gonna turn this stuff out), I thought to myself, "Self, all is not flaming poo and Sarah Palin. There must be some things that make you happy."

So, this post is to talk about happy things.

Jeff Buckley bootlegs make me happy. So do puppies. Christina Hendricks (shocking). Really anthemic work out music (feel free to share if you've got some!). Finding new artists. Quality public transportation. Disney movies make me happy (except for, like, Snow White which freaked me out in my formative years). Old movies with Marilyn Monroe or Paul Newman. Musicals. Double whammy of The Daily Show and Colbert Report. My guitar. Bacon. Good stories fanfic or pro. Books.

I could go on all day. And I possibly will, but now it's your turn, we all know what pisses us off, but what makes you happy? Is it a story? A song? A photo? An old shirt? A movie?

I bet you'll feel better just talking about it!

(Because I failed to speak up and say hi on lurkers day) This week it's Damian Lewis that is making me happy, first in Band of Brothers, and now I'm working my way slowly through Life (which has the added bonus of Sarah Shahi, who is also the awesome, and random happy making Michael Cudlitz guest starring, except his neck tattoo kind of freaks me out).
Also, cheap former Valentines candy, yay heart shaped Dove chocolates! (except for how they come with weird advice from Martha Stewart of all people)

I adopted a cat from a shelter two years ago. While she's always been friendly, she's never been a "lap cat". Two weeks ago she decided, on her own, that climbing down to sit on my feet on the couch was pretty cool. The next day she decided that perhaps sitting on my shoulder while I napped on the couch was even cooler. Now she's pressing herself against my neck, squirming into my lap without a by-your-leave, and doing her best to mold herself into my space.

I have no idea what has prompted the turnaround, but it makes me happy. ( Geez, just figured out that kittens and rainbows make me happy- gotta go watch a car chase/explosion to recover from this. )

Sushi! The sound of ropes hitting the mast on a sailboat (or on a flagpole, since it's almost the same sound). Sparkly stones, particularly expensive ones. Cute things falling asleep. Stories where people make out against a wall. Penguins!

PORNSWAT. Panera's cinnamon bagels. Icy cold water. Warm socks and slippers. Monkeys. The smell of stuff baking - breads, cookies, whatevers. The way the light sparkles off my ring when I get it cleaned. Hearing my kidlet read to me. Email from my friends. Jane Russell. Rosalind Russell. Rosemary Clooney. Smart, snappy dialogue in old movies. The warm powdery smell of baby skin. Having my hair petted. Carnations. Puns. Tight, one-shaped hugs that make you feel surrounded and loved. Laughing with friends. Sleeping in. Banter. Kissing. Hot boys who are also complete dorks.

1. Cooper calling Ben "boo."

2. Ice cream. (Almost) any kind.

3. Waffles! (Yes, an exclamation point.)

4. Prince's guitar solo in "Let's Go Crazy."

5. "You're normal people the way the people in Ordinary People are normal people." (Tony to Ziva, NCIS)

6. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, especially what happens after "Oh, you can't do that with a ping pong ball!"

7. Strictly Ballroom, especially what happens after "That's the future of dancesport!"

8. James Bond theme songs, but especially The Man with the Golden Gun by Lulu.

9. Yarn stores. So much potential!

10. Anything baked by my mom.

1. People seem to think I made this up in 'Son is on Midnight Run' but I totally didn't. Hell, it has to be pointed out to me!

3. I love waffles. And yet why are they so hard for people to get right? The ones with the little squares! The big squares get dried out!

4. I LOVE PRINCE!

8. My favorite is Goldfinger. I think that's because of the two lines in the middle of the movie where Bond's all "Do you expect me to talk?" and Goldfinger is all, "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"

The delivery there is just impeccable.

10. It is a fact that you and your mom can make the exact same thing with the same ingredients using the same tools and hers will taste better.

The String Quartet Tribute to Massive Attack, fuck, I love it so much, which got me listening to other String Quartet Tributes. Diana returning to White Collar (http://www.tvfanatic.com/2010/02/marsha-thomason-promoted-to-series-regular-on-white-collar/)--I'm waiting for the scene where she makes out with Natalie Morales. Sherlock Holmes and while I loved the boys, I loved both the girls just as much. Kalinda (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3359803648/nm0659544) from The Good Wife, she freaking pwned everyone's collective ass last ep. I'm half in love with her. Frozen raspberries. My blanket, which is gorgeous and soft and warm. Salted peanuts with Twix, trust me. The tv option on the elliptical machine that allows me to watch TDS and TCR instead of monitoring my heart rate and calories lost. The Manpain Flowchart (http://walkingshadow.dreamwidth.org/1431.html). The water pressure in my shower. My small accomplishments, whether anyone knows about them or not. Discovering and marathoning Kitchen Confidential (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460654/) while laughing my ass off. Awesome fic recs from fandoms that I don't follow. Feist and her flying toast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYF0qU5WSew). Baking. Having a working washer and dryer in my apartment.

Men carrying babies or toddlers. It hits a nerve that traditional feminine caretaking doesn't. There's nothing sexier than a man with broad shoulders with a sparkly magic wand in one hand and a sleeping fairy princess, her deelyboppers askew, sound asleep and drooling on his shoulder.

Holding hands. Romantically, platonicly, maternally. Comfort in touch.

Sitting on the sand and watching the waves roll in.

Walking between trees.

Witnessing strangers being happy. So thank you for this post.

Old movies with Marilyn Monroe or Paul Newman

Like The Sting! I love that movie. Paul Newman AND Robert Redford in the same movie, plus period clothing (designed by Edith Head, no less), plus CON MEN? *swoons* And now I want to go re-read The Big Con...

Also, coffee! And books about Victorian London with entire chapters devoted to how the city likely smelled. Being able to go out for drinks with my best friend from kindergarten, and for coffee with my best friend from high school. *delurks, sort of--is it still delurking if you've delurked before?* What an awesome post. (Also, February always sucks--I just forget from year to year how much. I'm not sure what February's damage is.)

What makes me happy now:

Southland. Homemade naan. My cat, Daniel. Hot showers. Excedrin for Migraines. Castle. Jon Huertas. Delaware St. John (http://www.delawarestjohn.com/volume1.htm). kd lang. xkcd. Art. Singing. Jethro Tull. Diet pop with Splenda. Stories, ooooh, yes. My friends. Smart people. We Are All Connected (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk) (YouTube video). Janelle Monae.

But what makes me most happy right now: the Shared Work program, which means when I get my pay cut next month, I at least get to go part-time, so I won't have to work as hard for my reduced salary. :D

Also, what is a Shared Work program? I know not this concept. It sounds, however, like you don't get paid every month. I don't think I could do that.

The weather is gorgeous right now. The cherry trees are already blooming. I get to wear jeans to work tomorrow. My city is having a giant party, and it's going really really well. I got to Zipline over a major road. My NHL team was leading its division at the break. My national team is doing pretty good so far. Hayley Wickenheiser exists in the world. I could probably go on for a while. Nice post!
