You know. I'm not feeling fannish at the moment unless it answers to the name of Raylan Givens. It's my blood pressure you see. I like it where it is. And yet, my poor blood pressure is under attack from all sides.

First, there was the Congressman who claimed he served in Vietnam... except he never left the US. Ladies and gentleman, you "misspoke" when you say you left in April when you meant August. Saying, "I went to Vietnam and am a proud veteran," when I was in the reserves and never left my home state is not a misstatement. It is a LIE. Lie, motherfucker!

He made me upset. You don't do shit like that. Just like the blogger from Newsweek who feels that gay actors can not play straight roles. It's just not "believable." What planet are you FROM, dude? Have you ever seen a movie or TV show? Do you have any idea how many gay people are on your TV and big screen? How many men and woman refuse to come out in the industry because of stupid opinions like yours? You are fired, asshole.

The guy from Harvard was just annoying. Did you not hear about this one?

This young man lied his way into Harvard -- for all four years. And only got caught when he tried to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship. He falsified all his records and got into Harvard. Nobody ever fucking checked. He just boggles my mind. BOGGLES. This is Harvard. If he'd been a woman or a minority, there's no way he would've made it this far. And this is annoying. Okay, it's something besides annoying, but we'll just go with that.

So, we've got Blumenthal and Harvard Liar. And then there's Rand Paul (Yes, he's related to Ron Paul). Whoooo. If you voted for Rand Paul in the fine state of Kentucky please leave this LJ at once, because anybody who thinks civil rights shouldn't be mandatory. NOT OKAY.

My god, just typing this is getting me upset. And then today we hit The Tipping Point. Yes, in all capitals.

Let me tell you about Jesse Bernard Johnston III. Who's that you say? That's the young man who lied his way into the Army. Well, people lie to the Army all the time. Trufax. But how many have only been to the USMC's OCS (Officer Candidate School) in college, dropped out and then managed to convince the Army he was a NCO in their reserves. For, like, a long time. This was not a one night thing. This started back in February. Homeboy just swanned up and the Army said, sure, you can be an NCO with no training, at the Fort Worth Air Force Base. And I quote
The matter, currently under investigation by the Army, means a soldier received a security clearance and was in position to lead troops in combat even though he hadn't gone through basic training or spent any time in the service.

In the meantime, come talk to me about happy things. DW is tomorrow. Eleven is love and hotassery in bowties. Southland in 7 months. I would really like some music to work out to if anybody's got mixes they put up or blogs they are loving. [livejournal.com profile] sincerely_jane made an animated RDJ mood theme. And I -- I will be over there, talking to [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 and [livejournal.com profile] maurheti about Brad Colbert/Raylan Givens porn. (I need Raylan icons).

Jesus, this post is one whole bucket of fucked up shit.

But: you're watching Justified? Is there a fannish movement for it that I don't know about? 'Cause I want in on that!

I haven't seen a fannish movement. Except the movement of Timothy Olyphant's hips.

So many cases of deceitful, annoying, and/or stupid human beings.

I caught up with Justified one weekend and I'm glad that I did. The buzz is completely accurate. I missed it on Tuesday, but hopefully I'll be able to watch it this weekend. I'm SO DOWN with Brad/Raylan fic.

Eleven is love. He almost makes me forget about Nine...almost.

Brad/Raylan is my new black. Raylan is Brad's older man. He teaches him things Brad didn't even know he didn't know. Also, Raylan is Ray Person's cousin. The "Ray" is a family name thing. I know. My brain works like that.

I love Raylan. I love him and his long long legs and his cowboy hat. I love his coworkers and want to see more of them. Especially the black woman that called him on his 'swagger.'

I love that he can't stay away from Boyd or Ava. And that he has daddy issues.

I don't know anything about Brad but what you and Sparky say but I plan to rectify that this summer. I know you'll hook me up when I start feenin' for fic.

Funnily enough, I was just reading an article about the whole Newsweek shenanigans. I suppose Im more surprised that people in the comments have remained fairly sensible so far!

As for music, theres some recent stuff under my music tag. Most have tracklists so you can see if anything tickles your fancy.

That misspoke thing? DRIVES ME UP THE WALL TOO.

And Rand Paul exemplifies a lot of the problems I have with small government libertarians right here. NB - do you think h;s called Rand afetr Ayn Rand? I bet you he is.

PLUS Justified? Is the best thing on tv imho. Beautifully scripted, totally in the Elmore Leonard spirit, with some pretty damn decent acting, and the most awesome display of behatted hotassery ever. Seriously, between the sexypants hotness of Timothy Olyphant and the narrative (which reminds me a bit of the Coen brothers as well), I am sold.

Timothy Olyphant is just like whoa. That was the first thing that got my attention (he's getting hotter with age, I like it when that happens). And the hat. Oh, the hat.

Here is my favorite comment in regards to the Newsweek article. Eloquent and wonderful:

"If Setoodeh, as a professional theatre critic, isn't able to separate the two, I think that speaks more to his unprofessionalism, incompetence, and, yes, internalized homophobia. If Mr. Setoodeh, as a theatre critic, can't get past an actor's sexuality when watching him perform, then he needs to find another artistic medium to review because many actors in theatre are gay. It's a stereotype, but it's also a fact. It also does nothing to deter from a performance. I mean, he singles out Jonathan Groff's supposed lack of chemistry with Lea Michele on Glee, yet makes no mention of their past performance together onstage in Spring Awakening. Mainly because Groff wasn't an "out" actor yet, and therefore knowledge if his sexuality could in no way impact or cloud how one viewed his performance. However, now that he's on Glee and is open about his sexuality, it's an issue for Mr. Setoodeh."

I was so very dismayed that Aaron Sorkin wrote an op-ed saying that Mr. Setoodeh wasn't to blame, it was "the culture that preys on personal information". I understand what he's saying about paparazzi and tabloids and TMZ and I don't necessarily disagree with it. However, when he writes statements like "we should stay out of actors' personal lives altogether", he needs to realize two things.

1. That's not going to happen. This is where we are now. It can become a gross violation of privacy, and it's intrusive, but the genie ain't going back in the bottle.

2. When you make a statement like that in a debate where the central issue is if gay actors and actresses can come out of the closet with their careers intact, it means that you are falling on the side of "stay in the closet". And that will not ever sit right with me.

(Also if this dude thinks that a straight woman can't still be attracted to a gay man and buy him in a heterosexual role, he should come over to my apartment where I will present him with a 45 minute PowerPoint presentation called "17 Different Ways I Would Do It With Jonathan Groff.")

Okay, I'm not totally defending Blumenthal, but this article made me think a little better of him. It actually seems like he said he served "in Vietnam" as in "in the time period of Vietnam", though there's one funky quote where he supposedly remembers the handshakes etc. from when "we" returned...except it's been attributed to multiple people over the past ten years. It seems like he fucked up, and then McMahon's people took serious advantage. Obviously, I don't know what happened, but he's been a really good attorney general, who's looked out for his state, and I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Okay, give me a minute to be distracted by the hotass. *is distracted*

Okay, the thing with Blumenthal is that if this was a one time verbal slip up or misunderstanding, then I would understand. But he's been saying this sort of deliberate misstatement for YEARS. You don't get to do that for years and then say "my bad." I know nothing about his politics, so if you tell me he's good at his job, I will take you at your word, but that doesn't make this okay.

From: [identity profile] forsweatervests.livejournal.com
He is pretty darn distracting. No lie.

No, no it doesn't. I'm just wondering if the distinction was clear in his head, and he really, truly just thought he wasn't confusing anyone. I don't know; I'd like to believe the best of people, and Blumenthal has seemed incredibly sincere in his apologies. He has a good record with the armed forces, and he's always personally greeted every serviceman and servicewoman who's returned to CT from a tour of duty. The most telling thing to me is that the only people who've had something bad to say about him, are newscasters, politicians, and people looking for a soundbite. None of the people in the service who've worked with him or simply met him have come forward and shamed him, while a number have come forward defending him.

On the other hand, if Blumentahl knew what he sounded like and kept on at it? Not even remotely okay with me. If that's the case, I hope he gets skewered for all he's worth. I'm just even less impressed with Linda McMahon now, since she's the one who apparently paid for this to be bannered across the tops of our screens and papers.

Okay, now I'm well and truly confused. I had seen on the news that he'd made a statement/apology already. Well, I should have known; it was NBC. So we're to understand that he hasn't apologized, but that he's claimed his "explanation" was sufficient? And we still don't know if his gaffe was sneaky or a mistake. Clear as mud is right. His campaign must be floundering like nobody's business right now.
