“I’m not staying.”
The words seem course and harsh but his tone is unconvincing, and so his voice wavers like the faint moonlight streaming through the window. There’s no force behind the words, because he doesn’t mean them. He'll have to try again.
“I’m not staying the night.”
He had meant for the statement to come out louder, more assured. He had meant for her to actually hear him say it, but considering that her eyes are still closed and he didn’t even hear the words come out his mouth perhaps it didn’t work.
Perhaps he didn’t want it to work.
Maybe Draco really doesn’t want to leave this idyllic hideaway under the stairs to the Great Hall. Maybe he’s willing to be disowned by his mother and his father and all his friends. Perhaps being heir to a fortune is worth nothing at all compared to staying by Granger’s side. At times like this, when the waxing moon cascades a white beam through the window that casts a half-light on her face, he truly believes that he can give everything up for her.
But it’s only a temporary relapse. He’s not staying.

“It makes sense,” he retorts, though not quite as belligerently as he should. His voice isn’t quite as strong as he would like it to be and wavers at the end, though Harry’s eyes never leave Draco’s face. He wants to see a reaction to his insinuation. Harry wants to see if the denial is plausible at all, and he’s found that people seem to lie more at night.
They seem to think they’re safe in the dark.
“I always knew you were off your rocker, Potter, but this has got to be a stretch even for you.” Harry can clearly make out the sneer on Malfoy’s face in the moonlight cascading through the windows of the tower, and the disdain in his voice is clear. Of course his first response would be sarcasm. Harry’s not surprised, he was never expecting Draco to fall into his arms and sob his heart out, but the denial hasn’t come yet either which is key.
“It makes sense though.”
“Yeah, the sort of sense that doesn’t make sense at all,” Draco replies, his tone sounds amused. Amusement borders close to sarcasm, sarcasm as a defense technique is something that Harry’s read about. He’s never employed it, but Draco seems to have it down to a fine art.
“Don’t you see it?”
“All I see is you in St. Mungo’s before the night’s out, Potter. The Prophet will probably take up a collection to get you the best care there is, can’t have the champion of the people turning into a nutter.”
Harry’s still waiting for the denial. He’s beginning to wonder when it’s going to arrive.
“Are you telling me that you’ve never even thought about it?”
“I’ve thought about a lot of things, Potter, like pushing you off your broom for one. However, I can truthfully say that you coming to me in the Owlery hasn’t topped my list recently.”
“Well, perhaps you need to expand your horizons a bit.”

“I’m sorry to bother you, I just didn’t know where else to go.” Well, Chloe can think of a few places right off the top of her head like the Dairy Queen or her own house, but who is she to judge?
Clark tends to make people a bit crazy like that anyway.
“I know how you’re feeling. There’s just no excuse for him sometimes, trust me on this one.” The remark is the first thing that comes to Chloe’s mind when she opens the front door and sees Lana there looking rather pissed off. She knows that look; she doesn’t even have to ask what’s wrong.
Only Clark Kent could upset anyone that badly.
“But you know, I certainly wasn’t expecting to see you tonight. I take it this is a surprise to you too.” Not that Chloe was expecting to see anybody tonight as her blue rabbit pajamas will attest, but of course, all the freaks come out at night and that’s why she’s standing on Chloe’s porch.
Well, freak is certainly one word for her, after all anybody that pretty has got to be a freak of nature. No one could ever accuse Lana of being the other sort of freak, not even considering the Laura Ashley motif she’s currently sporting.
“Come on in, I was just settling in with Ben and Jerry and Dawson.” If someone had told Chloe that she’d be spending her evening comforting Lana Lang after she was ditched by Clark Kent, Chloe would have laughed herself stupid right before pushing said person over a cliff. It could be seen as funny if she turned off the lights, squinted her eyes and tried real, real hard.
“Thanks, Chloe.”
“Don’t mention it.” Really.
