I tried. I really really tried, but how can the director of Broken Hearts Club make a show and it not be slashy? Exactly. So. Since I’m going to hell anyway, I’m just going to drabble this and be done with it. I pray.

Colin’s birthday is August 21st, and his favorite color is yellow. He has a scar on the inside of his right knee from a sliding tackle, courtesy of Bright of course, from when they played soccer together in seventh grade. They’ve always been together, Bright and Colin and Colin and Bright.

Bright knows Colin better than anything and/or anyone else.

Amy doesn’t know that.

Bright remembers the little things about Colin in ways that he can’t remember Mrs. Frye’s homework for Humanities, or the combination to the locker at the foot of his bed. Nothing ever seemed important except for when they were together, and when Colin went into the hospital, it was like Bright tried to stop time. He didn’t want anything to happen without Colin. He didn’t want Colin to miss anything.

Colin was, is, his best friend.

Bright doesn’t know what it’s like to forget.

There was blood and glass, and Colin was so pale. Bright remembers that he tried to talk to him, tried to make Colin come back to him and nothing happened. He wishes he could forget, but Bright remembers that most of all, and he’s counted every day that Colin hasn’t been around to kick him in the shin during Science.

Colin’s always been there.

Bright’s spent four months trying to forget what he did. One hundred and eighteen days of misery over his own stupidity and Colin’s desire to make him happy. If only Bright hadn’t been drinking, if only Colin had said no, but Colin never said no to Bright.

Not ever.

It was part of what made them best friends, and Bright hasn’t forgotten that. Apparently Colin has though, because according to what Bright’s heard, Colin doesn’t know who Bright is. Colin doesn’t even know who Colin is, but that’s can’t be right. If Bright knows then surely Colin does too, so why is Bright so afraid to go over and find out? Why has Bright been avoiding Colin at his own Welcome Home party?

Bright has a scar from where Dr. Brown took out his appendix, and he has the letter that Sarah Beene sent him when she tried to ask him out. Bright is going to fail Math without help, and Colin doesn’t know about any of this. Bright’s just dying to tell him, but what if he doesn’t care? What if Bright sits down next to Colin on the sofa, and Colin doesn’t know him? Doesn’t smile at him and just gazes at him blankly?

Bright's not sure if he can deal with that.

He just wants Colin to know that he's sorry. That Bright missed him. That he'll do anything to make this right. But that's not necessary, because this is Bright’s Colin, and despite all the jokes and the gags and the pranks, Colin would never do that to him.

Colin has to know him; the world depends on it. Colin has to forgive him; Bright depends on it. He still remembers the first time Colin came over to play after school.

Bright remembers birthday parties and sleepovers. He remembers the first time Colin touched him and that completely awful first kiss under the bleachers. Never again during practice he said. Bright has said a lot of things. He's heard even more.

Bright knows what the Harts have said, what Amy’s said, but it has to be different for them.

It’s Colin, his Colin; it’s always been just them.

The idea that Colin doesn’t remember him, doesn’t remember them, it scares Bright out of his mind. So when he finally sees him, Bright just starts babbling uncontrollably. He can smell his own fear, and when Colin looks at him vacantly... it’s worse than anything else that Bright could ever imagine, and he only wants to forget.

Whoever is in Colin’s body right now is an imposter, and Bright put him there.

It’s all Bright’s fault, and that’s something else he’ll never forget.

i saw one episode and wondered if the Dad and Amy's Dad were like old lovers or something. 'cause they sparked. it was creepy, because Treat Williams gives me a mild wig.
