Smallville
The Way Young Lovers Do

1. Lex/Lucas

“If you’re expecting me to say thanks, you should probably think again,” Lucas says matter-of-factly while Lex bites his cheek to keep from grinning.

So, this is family.

Lex slides along Armour-All’d leather, bumping into Lucas as the Town Car almost hits a garbage bin; but Lex pays for the best, and Mario promised him that getting out would be as easy as getting in.

If the rest of his life were this lucky, Lex would truly be charmed indeed.

Instead he’s in the back of a dark sedan with his brother, and even Lex may not be able to explain this without employing quite a bit of finesse. All in due course, however, because after eighteen years, there’s nothing wrong if Lex just wants to take a look.

Lucas has this incredibly thick hair, like his father’s, and Lex feels this overwhelming urge to touch it. Only he won’t because this isn’t that sort of meeting, and this isn’t that sort of family. Luthors don’t believe in public displays of real affection.

Anything can be faked.

Besides, if someone had shown up at Zero claiming to be Lex’s brother, he wouldn’t even have given him the time of day. Or perhaps Lex would have knowing his father the way he does. There’s a part of Lex that knew Lucas existed long before his father said anything about him.

And yet.

And yet, that’s closer to his father’s training than Lex would like to be right now, because Lex can see himself in Lucas’ body posture. In Lucas’ closed-off arms and the haughty tilt of his chin, even though he’s just been saved from certain death.

Lex hasn’t said more than ten words to this new brother of his since he climbed into the car, and they sped off into the night. He can see Lucas sizing him up out the corner of his eye and looking for the angle. Judging the competition before the fight.

There are some Luthor characteristics that don’t have to be taught, no wonder there’s something about the two of them together that feels very right.

2. Lucas/Pete

The corner of Pete’s eye twitches when Lucas gets too close to him, and Lucas likes that. It makes him reach for the door handle before Pete can let it go. When their hands briefly touch, it’s not Lucas’ imagination that Pete swallows like he’s got a frog in his throat.

On the drive to the castle, Pete babbles about The Vines and 50 Cent. Not one word about Lex or Smallville or Lucas being a Luthor.

Like Pete’s not impressed at all. Lucas likes that as well.

It makes Lucas want to know more about Pete and this blue Camero he calls Baby. It makes Lucas curious about Pete and Clark, and why Pete hangs out with some mopey jealous hick when he’s obviously so much cooler than him.

When the little voice in the back of Lucas’ head swears that it all can be explained by Lex, Lucas grins and nods his head as though he’s been listening to whatever Pete’s just said. Except that Lucas is paying attention, just not to the conversation at hand, because he knows nervous babbling when he hears it.

It can’t all be about the way he keeps shifting in his seat and cocking his head in Pete’s direction though. No matter the body language that Pete is using to throw Lucas off, Lucas can tell that there’s something he’s not supposed to know. Pete, Clark and Lex all act as if something is happening besides the unveiling of the newest heir of the Luthor dynasty, and Lucas wants to know this as well.

Perhaps Pete will be his proverbial ‘in’.

3. Pete/Clark

Clark’s jealousy is so obvious that Pete wonders how it doesn’t just stomp the entire town to the ground like Godzilla.

First Lana and now Lex.

That thing with the basketball really wasn’t cool at all, and Pete likes Lucas. He makes Pete laugh and relax, and Pete feels comfortable in a way he hasn’t in a while with Clark. Plus, Lucas doesn’t seem anything at all like Lex, although that could just be the hair thing throwing Pete off. It’s not as though Lucas ever did anything to Clark, and Clark is acting like some sort of dog trying to mark his territory.

Not to say that Pete doesn’t understand, because Clark is still his boy, but Pete’s been in the background long enough to see how things go. First with Chloe and now with Lex. Maybe this doesn't matter though, because there’s something about Lucas that interests Pete, and he can see them hanging out more often. After all, Pete may not get the girls, and he may not be the one with the alien powers, but if he gets a Luthor of his own then maybe Clark will see how it feels to be cast aside for someone new.

4. Lucas/Clark

Lucas might have liked Clark. He might have taken pity on him with his flannel fashion and farm-bred existence, but there’s something about him that rubs Lucas wrong. He’s too good, too wholesome. He acts like a judge, and Lucas has seen enough of them to know when he’s been found wanting without saying a word.

And yes, he saved Lucas’s life, but he also bruised Lucas’s elbow playing basketball and there’s something about the boy that’s not quite right. He’s too defensive, too closed off, too hard to read.

Anybody can see that.

Which makes Lucas wonder about Clark and his relationship with Lex, because Lex isn’t stupid no matter what their dad is trying to prove. So Lucas has to wonder a lot about what Lex sees in Clark. Of course the only way to find out is to get closer to Lex, and all things considered there have to be worse things than that.

Going back to Edge City for one.

5. Clark/Lex

Clark has these issues with personal space. They’re not that apparent as long as he’s in control of the situation, but when he’s not. Well, then things change. Like with Lana, everything was okay until she actually began to depend on him... but he’s the one who went looking for a job so that probably wasn’t such a smart idea.

The same could be said with Chloe, and Clark can be there on his own terms, but not when he’s required. He knows he’s not always there when people want him, but at least he’s always around when it’s important.

When it comes to Lex, however, that really isn’t enough, and Clark wishes he could be with Lex more often. He wishes that he could keep Lex safe because all these bad things keep happening to him, and a few are probably Clark’s fault. More than a few are Clark’s doing, but he only does it because he cares and wants Lex to be better than he thinks he is.

This resolution is why Clark's going to start spending more time at the castle again.

Yes, Lex looks happier now than he has in a while, but there’s something very wrong with Lucas Luthor. And as much as Clark wants to protect Lex, he’s doubts that Lex is going to be very willing to listen to him where his brother is concerned. Especially when Clark doesn’t have one of his own to refer too.

Especially considering the tenativeness of their own relationship, whatever it may be.

All the same, the presence of Lucas leaves Clark no choice. Every time they’re together, Clark feels this incessant need to mark Lex. To place a big sign on him that says ‘Hands Off, and Lucas this means you.’

Clark wishes he could explain it better to himself, or even Lex, but he just feels that every time Lucas is around Lex that he’s infringing on Clark’s personal space.

-finis-

Notes: Yes, Smallville is the gayest show on network television. Yes, I want Lucas icons. Yes, I adore all the Luthors and think they deserve their own spin-off.

'The Way Young Lovers Do' is a Van Morrison song, covered by, who else, Jeff Buckley. This is my shout-out to the total slashiness of 'Prodigal.' People, can we get Pete laid now?

Oh, my god yes. Could he have been any more obvious? This dynamic is so jacked up. ::claps gleefully::

This line made me laugh more than is appropriate in a public forum.

And this:

is a damn good line, dude.

I haven't seen the episode, but I *feel* like I have due to the extreme squeeing of everyone and the recappness of some very patient people, and this is lovely. I'm a big whore for the blending of canon material with fannish insight and this is a great example of that. Especially liked hearing from Pete, cos I thought the dynamic with him was really interesting on the show.

This episode didn't make up for the the rest of the crap they've put us through this season, but it came damn close. Yes, it was that good. Yes, it's begging for all sort of dark-fic and the Legend of the Luthor Boys. Oh, snap. Where is all the Lucas fic? Goddamnit. ::stomps foot::

As exorcisms go, did it work?

Sounded good. Damned perceptive. See, that feeling to slap Clark is happening all over again :)

Yes and no. The post-prodigal thoughts aren't as manic now, but they're beginning to unify and talk really loudly about their needs. Like cranky boyfriends. Yikes.

A Luthor of one's own! There's a thought. There ought to be one for everyone.

Now that's a campaign promise I could really get behind. A Luthor in every home and two in the garage! *vbg*

Very nice little exorcism, baby doll. You've got quite a fucked up little bunch on your hands, don't you?

And no one has ever written Pete slash that made me, well, believe.

Heh.

Der, that should read *until this*.

Because Pete was totally digging Lucas in my mind, now.

Evil Lucas.

I haven't really found any Pete-slash that made me believe either, not due to the writing, but more down to the character. And then last night happened and I just goggled. I see them playing basketball. I see them playing video games and doing all the stuff that Pete purportedly did with Clark, but which I've never seen.

Can you imagine if Rush!Pete ever met up with Lucas? Insanity.

There was too much happening in my head and I had to make them shut up, at least for now. And the problem isn't that Lucas wants attention, but that I actually want to give it to him and I don't even know how. Also, am I the only person who noticed how he didn't give *any* girl on the show a second glance?

I am in full support of everyone having a Luthor of their own. Clark has Lex, Pete gets Lucas, and Martha has Lionel. So, who does poor Jonathan get? Ahahaha. Dead!Julian?

And, very lovely little . . . fic. Write some more! I'd love to see some good Pete/Lucas. AU or not. Hell, Pete can visit him. He can visit Pete. Yay Pete's gonna get some! :D

As I said earlier, I fully support anybody who can provide a Luthor in every bed and two in the garage. And as for the Lucas/Pete, I think it's my new drug of choice.

Luuuucas. We love him, yes we do. (of course, I would love him more had I actually seen the whole episode, but. whine.)

Mmmm to the Lex/Lucas. Nice shot of the dynamic. And oh, Pete/Clark. Clark is his boy! Yes, yes, a lot. And hey, this:

After all, Pete may not get the girls, and he may not be the one with the alien powers, but if he gets a Luthor of his own then maybe Clark will see how it feels to be cast aside for someone new.

is just, damn, yes. Exxxxcellent. And then we have Lucas/Clark, and yeah, I could see it. Damn, I'm loving Lucas here. He's just so right.

And yay Clex. Because, yeah, that's it. Possessive!Clark knocks me right down, and I'd like to stay there. Lovely.

I think I like the Lucas/Pete the best cos it's real subtle with the slashiness, and Lucas is a calculating little motherfucker, which is right on. It's all good though, man. All good.

Lucas/Pete, it's the new drug, all the pushers are promoting it ;) Seriously though, 'Prodigal' has to be the first slashy Pete moment I've ever seen on SV. And I am so happy that you liked this sweetie, I can't believe you didn't see it all. You must catch the repeat. It's to die for. Easily my favorite episode this season. Plus, you know, even with the fuzzy eyebrows Lucas is still a Luthor, ergo, hot.
